I recognised the former Shepherds Bush police officer, Jim Smith. Jim Smith used to be a detective with the Metropolitan Police C-11 Squad who was also one of the officers who took down several members of the Kangaroo Gang who were an Australian gang of shoplifters responsible for a series of bizarre thefts from a number of high-end stores and banks throughout the UK and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. That photo of Jim Smith in his police uniform and bobby helmet was taken after he was demoted from detective as it was revealed that the Kangaroo Gang had several associates who were high-ranking officers within the Metropolitan Police CID The documentary also mentioned Guenther Podola who was last man hanged for the murder of a police officer. Podola was a German thief who had been once a member of the Hitler Youth movement during the Second World War. In 1952, he moved to Canada, on the 1st March 1957, Podola was sentenced to 10 days imprisonment for burglary in Montreal. On the 26th March 1957, he was later sentenced to two years imprisonment on another 11 counts of burglary and theft. Following his release on the 25th July 1958, Podola was deported back to West Germany. On the 21st May 1959, Podola moved to London. Under the alias of Mike Colato, Podola broke into the house of American model, Verne Schiffmann in Roland Gardens and stole £2,000 worth of jewellery and furs, he then phoned Schiffmann and offered to return them for £500, prompting Schiffmann to inform the police. On the night of 12th July 1959, police had spotted Podola in Kensington as he was making a phone call to Schiffmann and went to arrest him. During the arrest, there was struggle and Podola shot and killed the arresting officer, Detective Sergeant Raymond Purdy.
