Maybe the fact that Alice's whole body got taller, not just her neck, and the bird thought she was a serpent, made it more nonsensical. With the longer neck, there is some sense.

12:01 In the book the Walrus and the Carpenter both eat the oysters.
At first Alice says she liked the Walrus best because he was at least a little sorry for them, but the Tweedles explained that he ate more than the Carpenter and that his holding the tides to his face wasn't so much because of tears as to hide how many he'd eaten. Alice changes her mind and says she liked the Carpenter best for not eating as many, but the Tweedles just told her that he'd eaten as many as he could get.
So she just decid3d 'They're both very disagreeable characters" and left it at that.

This was almost Disney's first animated feature. In 1933 Walt wanted to do an animated/live action hybrid starring silent movie megastar Mary Pickford as Alice which would have been kind of crazy because she was already in her 40s at that point (she usually played much younger characters but this was still a stretch). He only didn't do it because he learned Paramount was making an Alice movie at the time. There are some pictures from Pickford's screen test though that are quite easy to find on google.

The Mad Hatter is, of course, "mad", as in insane, not angry. 10/6 is the price of the hat - 10 shillings, six pence. The dormouse is voiced by Jimmy McDonald, who's usual job was providing sound effects for Disney films. The alternative answer to the riddle - why is a raven like a writing desk? - is, because Edgar Allan Poe "wrote on" both.

The reason the bird said that Alice was a serpent is because in the original book her neck grew which makes sense why it would think that. Originally in the 30s-40s they were planning to make a darker adaptation more similar to the book and illustrations were done by David Hall that show the concept.

This is personally one of my favorite movies, but I love silly, clever gimmicks. I liked it as a kid, but I didn’t really fall in love with it til I got older. It’s a true escape from reality. But the point of the movie is “thank goodness life isn’t really like this!” Alice learns throughout her dream to appreciate some of the order in life, and that’s something lots of kids need to learn (like the importance of sleep, eating vegetables and not just dessert, you have to be considerate of others, etc.). I also love the style of music and the animation art in this movie.

It’s My Un-Birthday today as well!
One interesting fact I have you probably didn’t know where this was the first Disney film to have end credits and wouldn’t do again until The Black Cauldron in 1985.
Ed Wynn’s dialogue was all improvised during the Reference footage and when it was time for the recording of the scripted dialogue they found it wasn’t as funny as what he said so what is in the film is his improvised work.
While the film wasn’t a hit when it first came out it later became a hit in the 1960’s along with Fantasia especially on college campuses.

I feel like Ediz would enjoy the books more because as strange as they are, it actually has sense in a way that it makes you see things another way. Few examples:
The Caucus race was a way to get dry after listening to a “dry” lecture but also a race where everyone wins.
The watch at the mad tea party shows the day of month instead of the time so it really was 2 days slow.
The flowers talk because they’re planted on hard ground instead of a soft flowerbed so most flowers are asleep.
The shrinking and growing Alice goes through symbolises changes in growing up that Alice goes through an identity crisis. Eventually using the mushrooms she learns how to control the changes of size.
In the white rabbits’ house it’s actually the drink me bottle but there’s no “drink me” label so Alice ponders what may happen.
And that’s just a handful of examples so there’s a strange underlying logic to it

  • @animarodies3755

    A few things to say:
One of my favorites, too. I also relate to Alice's wild imagination.
Here's a fact not necessarily about the movie, but about the author: Lewis Carroll is said to have been neurodivergent, having traits associated with people on the autism spectrum, such as logical thinking, preference for routine, and difficulties with social interaction.
About the scene with the oysters, you could argue that it's foreshadowing events later in the movie. What drove the oysters out of the sea? Curiosity. The result: They died. What drove Alice to follow the white rabbit? Curiosity. It's a classic case of "Curiosity killed the cat."
I love the face Ediz makes when he sees Alice was dreaming at 53:28. He's like, "Really?"
And, yes, it is my unbirthday.

  • @garybassin1651
    @garybassin1651 2 месяца назад +3

    1. It is because of Lewis Carroll that we call those flying insects, butterflies. In England, they used to be called "flutterbys" because that's what they did. Carroll's pun of "bread and butterflies" really caught on with the public.
    2. Sadly, the Disney writers completely rewrote The Walrus and the Carpenter. The original poem is so much better.
    3. Disney originally wanted to animate the original John Tenniel drawings but was talked out of it.

  • @theadaptationstationmaster

This is one of my favorite Disney movies too. I feel like we can all relate to Alice at some point, especially in online discussions. We've all felt like the only polite, sane person in a roomful of crazy, rude people. LOL. (I grew up loving the Lewis Carroll books too.)
A surprisingly obscure pun is when the doorknob tells Alice that her entering the door would be "simply impassible." Impassible actually means being unable to feel pain or suffering. Who knew?

    • @dragontears
      @dragontears 2 месяца назад

Eeehh, they're really not tho? Like complaining that a story designed to be nonsense is nonsense is kind of nonsense in and of itself. It's like complaining that Thai food is spicy or their is too much sand at the beach or something. The nonsense is the point. And the "it was all a dream" ending might feel overdone NOW but it wasn't then, and it works perfectly in the context of the movie, with all the lead up you'd need to go back to say oh yeah of course she was asleep the whole time. Now all of the nonsense that followed her wish for nonsense, that upset her practical nature actually makes perfect sense.

Our two Disney kings have returned! And with a super long reaction no less! This was probably one of your most interesting reactions so far, in that both your views were so polarizing. Even as a kid, I was always kind of indifferent to this movie. I never liked it as much as Ben, but I didn't hate it as much as Ediz. But now that I'm an adult, I can understand and appreciate what the Wonderland story is trying to say----that while it's great to have an active imagination, there IS a reason why we have rules and laws in place. And for this specific movie, it also doubles as a "be careful what you wish for" plot. Alice wanted to live in a world of nonsense, and when she gets what she asked for, she realizes how scary and dangerous a "nonsense world" would actually be. So yes---Ediz's frustration with this movie is totally understandable.....because now HE'S in Alice's shoes.

Ben, cutie cutie chaos curator, I too have a deep rooted affection for this film. Personally I suspect it stems from the whirlwind of confusion I was expected to accept with zero explanation. So weirdly when nothing makes sense, everything makes sense. I don't know, I think it makes more dynamic characters in adulthood. 🥰

44:57 It's not a complete card deck without a king, even if he's just for show.
I think I read a version of the story somewhere where every time the queen shouted "off with his/her/their head" he'd quickly whisper 'you are pardoned' to them as they were lead away and that the queen just doesn't keep track of these things, but I think that was in a rewrite.

Something about the 10/6, it's missing a bit. In the original book illustrations, the full tag says "In this style, 10/6". It's not that he bought the hat and forgot to remove the tag, it's that he's advertising that this is how much it would cost to commission him to make this style of hat. Also, given that time is money, 10/6 also refers to Mad Hatter Day, in which people are encouraged to act "in this style". Depending on which side of the pond you're on, 10/6 is either June 10th or October 6th.

I love this movie. I've always loved it, and the original stories. People get too caught up in "the plot" and whether or not it makes sense. Who cares if it makes sense? This is a children's movie, based on children's books. It doesn't have to be "War and Peace". Ediz's reaction to this reminds me a lot of other RUclips reactors watching "Monty Python" for the first time, specifically "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", and being like "Nope, too random, doesn't make sense, crappy ending, I don't like it". Just relax your brain and take it for what it *is*, which is a fun story about fun characters doing fun things. It's a little bit mad, yes, but it's supposed to be. That's what makes it great.

So for the Tweedles dance I feel like you can't do it in real life as is, but if you start off back to back and one person hops off the other persons back you could maybe revers it in editing and play with the frames to get the effect you want through editing. Y'all probably thought of that though just wanted to mention it in case. 🤘

Ediz - I personally felt attacked when you said the story of "the walrus and the carpenter" was a waste of time and not relevant for the plot 😢
I mean, you're right, but it's still my favorite part of the movie 😂❤ "The time has come!"
Ben - 3:03 - 100% feel you on this one and can relate 👌🫧✨️

I'm not trying to be mean, but the ending may seem generic for our time, but we should keep in mind that tropes happen over time.❤ When I was a kid Alice in Wonderland was my favorite. It's hard to explain when you get older how bright and vivid and fun everything was. It's different now that I'm older. I remember when I first saw it was on TV at a babysitters house. I kept begging her to turn the channel back because she kept changing it.

I think the cat IS chesire. I think every character represents an irl character like wizard of oz. The rabbit is a random rabbit found on the grass, diamond is chesire, Tweedledum and Tweedledee are probably her brothers, Queen of hearts is her sister and the king is her dad or sisters bf mb

I think this movie put me off mustard completely.
I hadn't eaten mustard before seeing this but had had everything else (special task when getting fish and chips, to ask for two slices of lemon), so I just alienated mustard and took the mad hatter seriously when he passed on mustard.

... EVERYONE talks about Alice in Wonderland. What in the world. Is this cultural or generational? Alice was super popular, it had a massive resurgence throughout the late 90s and early 00s, at least in the US. And this is Disney Alice not just Alice in general, though Alice in Wonderland in general has always been mad popular. It is referenced in pop culture a lot because of its popularity and icon status, and was one of the first to grab a live action remake because it's the sort of thing creatives connect to create and had a really established audience.

I must say, as much as I know it's an acquired taste... I ADORE this movie! It is my second favourite Disney movie of all time; the n.1 spot is Fantasia, another "marmite film" as you say XD. I just feel that it captured the anarchic spirit of the books without going too literal and having its own, very special identity.
HOWEVER... As much as I love some of his films, and while I can understand why some people like it... Tim Burton's Alice in "Underland" is my most hated film; it is an utter insult, a slap in the face to EVERYTHING Wonderland is about. As someone who's seen "Rapsittie Street Kids", "A Serbian Film", "Disaster Movie" and ALL THREE animated Titanic movies... No movie rouses my ire more than that one...

Hopefully at some point, you will watch and react to Disney's 1985 movie, Return to Oz (if you haven't already done so). Many Oz fans, myself included, consider this the closest movie, a sort of love-letter, to the L. Frank Baum vision of Oz and the original John Neill illustrations, although others are put off by how dark it may seem compared to the MGM version.

@@EdizAndBen I saw the original MGM movie in 1955, when I was five, and had nightmares for years about the cyclone, despite living in Long Island, outside New York City. But how many other nightmarish movies are also greatly appreciated?
The books are available for free on Google books, and again, some with the original Edwardian Art Nouveau illustrations. Perhaps to appreciate Return, you might want to read the first half of Ozma of Oz and see how close this movie is to Baum's ideas - as a children's story, it is a very short, easy read. (The Wizard novel itself, is very blood-thirsty in sections. At one point, the tin woodsman chops the heads off a group of wolves sent by the witch, and in another, the scarecrow individually wrings the neck of a flock of crows sent to peck their eyes out.)
