- Kohl Stewart, Trey Ball, DJ Peterson, Nick Cuiffo - just some of the players drafted before Aaron Judge in 2013. In this video we'll look at all 31 players and what happened to them. #aaronjudge #yankees #62
I'm a Cubs fan. As much as I liked having Kris Bryant around during the championship run, the fact that he got traded and then his numbers tapered off makes me wonder what if Aaron Judge had been picked second. Would he still be the powerhouse that he is now? Would he still be with the Cubs? We will never know for sure, of course, but it is interesting to speculate.
Judge sucked in 2016 and has been injury prone his whole career like Bryant so... I'm glad we got KB.
@@CZsWorld uhhhhhhhhh judge just played 2 back to back fully healthy seasons but yeah for sure!!!
I'll take KB and the World Series
@@georgecabany4373 judge is injury prone LMAO
@@dogshxtgames3257 that narrative isn’t even being pushed anymore, you cubs fans are weird
That was a very interesting deep dive into that draft -- great job!
I am curious of all the non international players that are on the 26 man rosters for each team what percentage are first round picks, second round picks, etc. Just want to see how well in general is the drafting from college/high-school.
this was cool, like the format/concept. another twist could be list of best players drafted in the final round of the mlb draft. also agree with what someone else posted about international signings, maybe the top 5 japanese signings and busts. cuba, dominican republic would also be interesting.
It’s so funny that the Yanks can get drafting right but the New York Knicks certainly can’t, or even the New York Jets
Awesome video. Some nice players in the group but no Aaron Judge. A lot of misses too but that's the nature of drafting / minor leagues. Nice work.
D.J. Peterson is in the Rockies organization spent 2022 in Albuquerque with the Isotopes
Damn you really had to miss with Marco G like that… yeah he panned out just fine for the Mariners, thanks.
Ain’t no judge
And this is a big reason why I pay almost zero attention to the MLB draft. More times than not, the players drafted in the top 5 or 10 won’t end up being that great.
Cool idea I like the video 👍🏻
Thank you!
Really appreciate content like this
Your top 5 was spot on. Judge>All
No mention of Reese McGuire’s arrest and being a sex offender?
Kinda feels like an important detail.
Any chance you can do nkre videos like this? You could also do players who received more then X player on international free agentcy. I love this style, have a good one
Glad you enjoyed! I’ll certainly do more like this.
Kaminsky actually posted a 4.91 ERA and completely shoved the second half of the season after coming back from surgery( loose bone fragments cleaned out! ) Sub 2 ERA second half after rough start!
Great player in HS at Saint Joes. Sad he didn’t turn out great
Top draft picks are pretty much like lottery tickets, not very many live up to their “potential”. Albert Pujols was a 13th. round pick, Randal Grichuk was drafted ahead of Mike Trout and Bernie Carbo was drafted ahead of Johnny Bench. Pete Rose was only given a contract as a favor to his uncle who was a scout for the Reds.
Sometimes, a lot of these picks are affected by their expectations based on what place they were selected, as well as who they are developed by in their respective organization. I think if players like Chris Bryant, or Tim Anderson were in organizations like the Cardinals, or the Dodgers, their ceilings would have been a lot higher. a lot of scouts who were looking at Aaron Judge never took him too seriously, so it wasn’t much pressure for him to do as well as he’s doing now, but don’t get it wrong, in the future, if there is a kid on the board who is 6 foot seven almost 300 pounds of muscle, take him anyway, you’ll figure the rest out later. (with all due respect, how many of these guys in the draft were all Americans in three different sports?)
I know judge wasn’t highly regarded at the time of the draft, so glad he went to the Yankees
Only one you might pick over Judge now is Bryant, but only looking backwards.
If you’d pick Bryant before Judge with hindsight you’d be clinically insane.
@@jpetersgoyanks i mean with hindsight Bryant has a world series and MVP and as of RIGHT NOW judge has neither and Judge isn’t guaranteed a world series but he will get MVP this yr
@@CTDMally077 yet if there was an open draft of all current players any team in the league would pick Judge over Bryant. I didn’t mean to insult Bryant, perhaps I was too harsh… still, Judge is better.
This is a solid ass video. All praise to the goat Nick Swisher for not taking the QO.
62 means a lot to me because I have a A.J. Auto /10
I have a feeling no matter who drafted him once he started to show his power the NYY would sign him anyway.
Cool video. You should recap other past drafts and grade 1st round picks
I think the Cubs keep the Bryant pick since he helped them win the series in 2016 and Judge wasn't quite there yet.
Also. Let's not forget the A's drafted Judge out of high school and he didn't sign. Interesting to think what might have happened if he did.
I think if the A’s drafted, Mike Trout, Shohei, Ohtani, or Gerrit Cole out of high school they wouldn’t have signed there either
@@yell0wberry depends on their financial situation and mindset. Some guys want that money and dont wanna go to school no matter who drafts them
Judge had barely even cracked the 40-man in ‘16 while KB already had a ROY and MVP under his belt. Definitely an interesting thought though. Would Judge have made his way up the ranks faster with the cubs if the picks had been swapped? The Yankees had Beltran, ellsbury, Gardner, and Hicks. Ben gamel too if we’re splitting hairs. That for sure blocked Judge’s track to the show. Would Heyward, Fowler, Almora, Soler, and Schwarber have done the same thing? Would he have been used as a trade chip? Maybe to….the Yankees (with gleyber Torres) to get aroldis chapman.
The world of “what if” is so fun to think of.
@@smfny Agree 100%. I love baseball what-ifs. We don't know for sure what the Cubs woulda been with Judge, but we do know they won a series with Bryant. I think with hindsight if you could go back, you take the guaranteed world series win every time.
That said. It's probably irrelevant anyway since if you did a full redraft the Astros would most likely take Judge 1st and the Cubs would still end up with KB.
@@smfny I think a certain cheater by the name of Altuve, stole one of those awards from judge
can you do, "players selected before mike piazza?" lol
That would be like 30 hours long lol
Phil bickford is actually the one pujols homered off of to get to 700
Your telling me, the Braves missed Judge by 1 pick? Your shitting me?
God judge and Acuña jr in the same outfield 🤯🤯
The MLB Draft isn't like the NBA or NFL. You don't just Draft the best player you have to factor in how much they want for a signing bonus, will they sign over or under their slotted amount. Are you targeting College players or Prep players there are literally dozens of factors. And it's also WAY harder to predict who is or isn't going to be a star in baseball
And a lot of a player's success with each organization has to do with their natural talent and what they bring vs. their progression through the minors due to an organization's structure for their development and then how they adjust to MLB. Royals fans would happily trade Dozier for Judge but had they drafted Judge it is likely he would be more like Dozier than he is now.
@@scsmith4604 Exactly Baseball development is much more complicated and challenging than other sports. Austin Riley of the Braves was coveted by other teams as a pitcher. Imagine how different things could have been if another organization drafted him
This was a great video
Great video!
Can you imagine if Judge was picked by another team after the Yankees' 26th Jiggalo. That office would have been fuming
Man was Trey Ball a whiff for the Red Sox.
Unlike NBA/NFL ... seems the gap between Highschool/College and Majors is just MASSIVE because it seems like 7 out of every 10 mentioned FAILED.
Baseball drafts confuse me so much. so many busts or players that just don't pan out. If drafts like this happened in the NFL it would be historically awful.
We will never know which were done without hgh or steroids
This just shows you how much a crapshoot MLB drafts are. Baseball is a simple sport but tough to execute. It’s also a mentally tough sport to master. You can easily identify kids with great physical tools but how mentally strong, persistent heart, and what kind of baseball IQ they have is something that has yet to be mastered by scouts.
Yankees had the following pick, and I think they would've picked Judge there instead of Ian Clarken.
Well done. ⚾⚾🇺🇲🇨🇦⚾⚾ Jays and Bickford 🙄😳
Idk. A 24-25 year old rookie with injury problems. It’s different than the list of all the teams that passed up on trout
Kris Bryant is the only one you can argue was a better pick
0:05 did someone just die?
The MLB Baseball Draft is the biggest crap shoot in sports. With so many different positions and then hitting and defensive points (strong arm, speed) its so hard to scout potential.
Kaminsky was so good in high school. Sad he didn’t make it
He’s still pitching and finally healthy. His career is far from over! More to come! Stay tuned!
Standout class for roughly 2 players
Those top 5 are good, but judge may go down as one of the best
13:53, Stanek is in the top 5, what are you talking about?
had to hit like cause 62 is the true record for homeruns with out cheating...
I'll accept that, only if all the teams that won championships allow an asterisk beside them due to said cheating.
Fact is, its not the record, stop being a snowflake over it.
I thought this was Zach Lowe lol sound just like him
42 seconds into the video did ya see that guy falling off 🤔
i’m taking KB over judge. (i’m a mets fan and kris bryant is my favorite player)
If Bryant wasn't injured all this year, maybe, he balllled out in 2015 and 2016
Kris bryant won the cubs a WS, extremely cheap for them too. Overall a worse player but its gonna be tough for ny to keep judge just like bryant leaving chicago. Overall fair to pick him over judge or vice versa. Not a fucking chance on ANYONE else tho
To be fair, Cubs don't like spending consistently. Yankees are consistent spenders so they're far more likely to resign Judge than the Cubs were to resign Bryant.
Yankees have more than enough space and money to sign Judge. It’d be the worst move if they didn’t get him back, It’s basically like losing a Yankee legend at this point. No matter how much you spend it’s worth it because of his name and his lore alone.
Hind sight is 20/20.
Who said Yankees don’t draft all-time greats?
You're gonna have to admit it's been a long time since you have (Rob Cano)
All time greats come rarely though. In any given draft, you might get zero. You might also get 5. Rarely higher than that though, I would think. So when on average you might see 1-3 all time great caliber players in each draft. Given the fact the Yankees have only played like 10 or so games where they were out of playoff contention in the last 29 years, they obviously haven't had very many picks lower than 25. Given all that, getting 2 players like that in a 10 year stretch is actually pretty remarkable.
That being said, I believe Cano was an IFA and wasn't drafted at all.
@@shoukatsukai no, that is not that long ago for an all-time great. They are rare in any draft.
@@shoukatsukai They drafted Cole I believe, but he went back to college. They also signed Severino wayyy back in 2011 which is surprising, as an international free agent. Clark Schmidt is also up and coming, solid in the bullpen this year, and he was a draft pick.
What is OPS? Sorry to be naive.
It’s the stat that combines On base percentage with Slugging percentage
They didn't take hgh
Just pointing out, even his name is tarnished in the Yankees cheating scandal.
In my opinion, the best before Judge... Tim Anderson.
That’s fair. It’s him or Bryant 1 & 2 and there’s a case for TA to be 1.
Judge's problem, he disappears in the playoffs. Big disappointment for Yankees there.
Whoopsie
This just goes to show how pointless the draft is
OPS means nothing to most people. Talk stats they know.
I disagree. OPS has become very widely understood among baseball circles. It sums up offensive performance without having to run through a ton of other stats thus helping move on to the next player quicker in this video.
Baseball is about averages not hr
Yep
Sorry to break it to you but judge took HGH
So you tested Barry Bonds and Aaron Judge for steroids and HGH? You haven't? Well, your opinion is all I need. Whew! I thought I might actually need proof.
Are we ignoring that someone fell over the rail at 45 seconds? 🤣
He didn't fall he jumped down thinking the ball might land there. Not like the unfortunate folks who have fallen and been gravely injured
He's fine (now we can say, he's an idiot)
This gotta be the worst draft class ever. Judge carries this poverty ahh draft class
The fact that Ryne Stanek isn't in the top 5 is a disgrace bro. He's been absolutely nails this year out of the pen.
There is no top 5, the video is just draft picks before Judge
Point being the draft is a crap shoot.
Great Judgino the real Homerun king 👑
I’m a huge judge fan but even I’m not that stupid
What did I learn from a video where 31 people where scouted and selected before Aaron Judge? Scouts are looking at players from the wrong angle. Also, there only right about 5% of the time.
You couldn't trade all five of those top 5 players from that draft and get Judge in return.
What a hot mess
That was rigged for the Yankees. How do you pass on a monster, even with the issues. Pro sports are a joke
None of these players come close to Judge this year
Neither of them came close to Judge this year either. I bet he has nearly triple their WAR with his 11.4
For context, that's better, by quite a bit, than any season Mike Trout has ever had.
@@rowan6582 I don’t recall saying trout hasn’t been the better ball player over their careers. I just was putting in context how historically great Judges season was. Using Trout as the example was a compliment to Trout. It means I’m saying the best player of his era has never had a season of WAR as good.
@@rowan6582 also, he’s not the goat… yet. He might be someday but not yet.
Most of them never made it to the show.
