I've never run Upper Cherry and probably never will, but I've been in plenty of other whitewater, and no matter what the difficulty level, it is imperative to be watching out after each other. You have to be willing and able to do whatever it takes to keep your paddling friends safe, and to be able to know that you can relay on them when things go off the track. This was an absolute master class in how it should be done. It was a beautiful and inspiring thing to watch.
@Tommy Yuckguts Couldn't agree more! You've always got friends in the world of kayaking, and they'll always be pulling for you, even in a racing lap. I'm 72 years old, and I really should hang it up, but I can't. I just dial it back a bit in terms of what water I run, and root for the young ones up and coming in the sport. I'm more than happy to be mamma for the beginners in some easy class two or three and encourage them to keep on with it at whatever level they feel most comfortable with. I think the comraderie is one of the biggest parts of it, and I think most other kayakers feel the same way. It's just something that's in our DNA.

It's so easy to forget how good Dane is, he is just so casual and humble about everything and it's not untill you see him paddling with other (still very talented) paddlers his true skill level becomes apparent. Dude is a beast!!!

Hi Dane, Your videos are always great to watch and one of the things i like most about them is you keep the rescue sequences in. I personally find the way you manage river rescue scenarios quickly and effectively just as impressive as your trick throwing and shit running skills. You have highlight reels for those... Any chance you could go back through stuff and make the people a Dane Jackson river rescue highlight reel? I bet I wouldn't be the only one to watch it. Alterior motive- I run whitewater safety courses and I think I'd direct students to your reel on every single one if it was easier to do.

I am impressed that you are always there to rescue somebody! When I was whitewater kayaking alot in the New England area rescue was not trained at the time amd we winged it. I used to race against you dad in the late 80s in New England. You and your dad bring great memories!
Dane you talk just like my buddy Jared who kayaks. The difference is my buddy actually bit his tongue off a few years ago kayaking. Your cadence reminds me of him. He lives in Texas now, so I barely see him. It’s always a treat hearing you talk and thinking about Jared.

You know, I've read some of the comments with this video and most are from people who do some serious white water kayaking. I have an 18ft sea kayak and have done some very, very light rapids (you know ... fast bathtub water). I watched this sitting right in front of a 55in tv screen and I was shivering from the cold (ok, fear). My heart was in my mouth and I could feel a slight adrenaline rush and all that in my shorts sipping a coffee. If I were a man of few words; yah, I know, that's laughable, my comment would simply be ... "damn".

Dane is the big poppy on these trips making sure all the chicks are in order. The cherry is absolutely mind-boggling I can't imagine it in person. I think Dane could have run it, but he was looking out for his buddies, and wasn't going to put them in danger. That's what an exceptional guide is all about. I've got huge respect for that, and I'm sure from what you said above that you do too.
I like his sense ability and river craft. Like saying it’s 5:15 and not much time if something goes sideways when he decides not to do that sequence. And like he said he’s done it before so no big deal.There’s no shame in not drowning.
I seen him make that call on one previous video, nothing but praise for his smarts in the comments. he seems like a really good dude to kayak with, knows what to do in sticky situations and keep him and his buddies safe as possible in a sport like this.

My copy is a first edition which should tell you a little about how long I've been kayaking. It's an addiction that never goes away. Have to love the illustrations too! Liked the quote about how one's lodgings tend toward entropy. Also very true! William (not Bill) Nealy is also legend. Glad his books are still in print. It's terribly sad that he took his own life. He was so successful and was living a dream. I wonder what could have gone wrong in his life to make him take it? I have all of his kayaking books and one of his skiing books. My sister and I got a lot of giggles out of them, and also learned a lot from them. We were already seasoned kayakers by the time his first book came out, but it was still educational, and very funny. As far as I'm concerned, the books he wrote on kayaking should be required reading for all kayakers.

Showed my daughter a video of my local class 3 river at flood stage and she said that looks little I could do that. Showed this to my seven year old daughter and asked if this looks like big water and she said it looks just a little big not too big.
I doubt it. That would be a law suit waiting to happen. No rafting company I know of would be willing to take the risk. Also, since you're scraping bottom in so many places, it's very likely you'd hole the raft on the way down, and in any event, you'd need very experienced paddlers. You couldn't just load up a group of carp and have a prayer of it turning out okay.
I've been kayaking for 7 years now. My favorite 16 miles have been down the Colorado River. But this? This was INSANE! Where can I sign up and I'm 60 years old!!!
This video illustrates a number of issues that have trended into commonalities in the community and the shit is scary and responsible for a number of deaths. This video is commendable because it shows these issues but doesn't call them out through some come to arms community conversation. I hope those more aware to the need for better safety on our rivers take note and try harder.

Smart paddler. knows when to walk and when to run. Sometimes the "Dirtbag" scene is a bit over the top, Dane is not showcasing any of that. And he is hands down the best kayaker in the world. Interesting to note that he only has 85k subscribers. Whitewater kayaking is a very underground sport with a very small population doing it. If there was a bigger audience I reckon he would be reaching a million. However , 85k is a massive amount of people all things considered . Im sure he isnt too focused on the numbers though. When I first started running rivers in 92 there must have been maybe a thousand committed paddlers worldwide.
Think the water up there runs a constant 46 degrees, winter or summer. Doesn't matter. Drop a thermometer in it in the summer, 46 degrees. Drop a thermometer through a hole in the snow in winter, 46 degrees.
Dane is always ready to jump out of the boat to toss a line and help a friend out, love it.
