      Impressive how quickly, decisively and effectively he moved to help out his friends! That dry bag, grab and roll-up is likely the most incredible thing I've seen him do but probably isn't that impressive to anyone that's never tried to retrieve floating gear in a turbulent environment.

    • @Chompchompyerded
      @Chompchompyerded 3 года назад +1

      @@AaronPriceColby I so completely agree! I've never run Upper Cherry and probably never will, but I've been in plenty of other whitewater, and no matter what the difficulty level, it is imperative to be watching out after each other. You have to be willing and able to do whatever it takes to keep your paddling friends safe, and to be able to know that you can relay on them when things go off the track. This was an absolute master class in how it should be done. It was a beautiful and inspiring thing to watch.

    • @Chompchompyerded

      @Tommy Yuckguts Couldn't agree more! You've always got friends in the world of kayaking, and they'll always be pulling for you, even in a racing lap. I'm 72 years old, and I really should hang it up, but I can't. I just dial it back a bit in terms of what water I run, and root for the young ones up and coming in the sport. I'm more than happy to be mamma for the beginners in some easy class two or three and encourage them to keep on with it at whatever level they feel most comfortable with. I think the comraderie is one of the biggest parts of it, and I think most other kayakers feel the same way. It's just something that's in our DNA.

    11:40 it’s so damn cool how you know the river so well. Your pops is a great kayaker, but he must be an awesome teacher/coach too. Because you’re a great teacher/coach. Like father like son. Hi Dane, Your videos are always great to watch and one of the things i like most about them is you keep the rescue sequences in. I personally find the way you manage river rescue scenarios quickly and effectively just as impressive as your trick throwing and shit running skills. You have highlight reels for those... Any chance you could go back through stuff and make the people a Dane Jackson river rescue highlight reel? I bet I wouldn't be the only one to watch it. Alterior motive- I run whitewater safety courses and I think I'd direct students to your reel on every single one if it was easier to do.

    You know, I've read some of the comments with this video and most are from people who do some serious white water kayaking. I have an 18ft sea kayak and have done some very, very light rapids (you know ... fast bathtub water). I watched this sitting right in front of a 55in tv screen and I was shivering from the cold (ok, fear). My heart was in my mouth and I could feel a slight adrenaline rush and all that in my shorts sipping a coffee. Liked the quote about how one's lodgings tend toward entropy. Also very true! William (not Bill) Nealy is also legend. Glad his books are still in print. It's terribly sad that he took his own life. He was so successful and was living a dream. I wonder what could have gone wrong in his life to make him take it? I have all of his kayaking books and one of his skiing books. My sister and I got a lot of giggles out of them, and also learned a lot from them. We were already seasoned kayakers by the time his first book came out, but it was still educational, and very funny. As far as I'm concerned, the books he wrote on kayaking should be required reading for all kayakers.

Also, since you're scraping bottom in so many places, it's very likely you'd hole the raft on the way down, and in any event, you'd need very experienced paddlers. Smart paddler. knows when to walk and when to run. Sometimes the "Dirtbag" scene is a bit over the top, Dane is not showcasing any of that. And he is hands down the best kayaker in the world. Interesting to note that he only has 85k subscribers. Whitewater kayaking is a very underground sport with a very small population doing it. If there was a bigger audience I reckon he would be reaching a million. However , 85k is a massive amount of people all things considered . Im sure he isnt too focused on the numbers though. When I first started running rivers in 92 there must have been maybe a thousand committed paddlers worldwide.

      Think the water up there runs a constant 46 degrees, winter or summer. Doesn't matter. Drop a thermometer in it in the summer, 46 degrees. Drop a thermometer through a hole in the snow in winter, 46 degrees.

    14:13 Is that just the kayak stuck in the current or this the kayaker himself stuck underwater?

      It's his dry bag. The boater is the dude river left he is chatting up right after he rolls up.
