Now even in the Sterns defense the rating dropped a little after MJ but not as much as the ratings dropped when the NBA moved from NBC to ABC and the league moving the all star game to cable. Those were the biggest reasons for the ratings falling. ABC / ESPN would put prime time games on ESPN / Cable instead of prime time national TV like NBC would. NBC made sure that NBA games came on network TV and were first priority. NBC would advertise the upcoming prime time game a week in advance of the broadcast of the game. Where as ABC / ESPN wouldn’t even advertise the upcoming nba game and barely promoted them. They would put NBA games on ESPN 2 and prioritize the NFL, MLB over the NBA. There were times ESPN would broadcast an NHL game on ESPN 1 and the NBA game would be on ESPN 2 or a MLB game would run over at ESPN 1 and they would tell fans to turn to ESPNews to see the beginning of the NBA game.
