Same, girl! I’m also a 40-something mom living vicariously. I’ve never, ever lived alone. I’ve never even had my own bedroom! I moved straight out of my parents’ house 21 years ago into a place with my now-husband. Some days I wish I had my own apartment I could escape to! 😂

"It was like a cube" is exactly how I describe my experience currently living in DC. Everything is a box in the sky, all new apartments look the same unless you spend north of 2500/3000.

After selling a couple homes in 2022, I'm anticipating a housing crisis in order to buy inexpensively. As a backup plan, I've been thinking about purchasing stocks. What recommendations do you have for the best time to buy? On the one hand, I keep reading and seeing trader earnings of over $500k each week. When you know, you know! I fell in love with a place a couple months after I had just moved and I couldn't get it out of my mind. I had never seen it in person but I knew it was perfect. It just happened a unit was available at the perfect time and I snapped it up. I was ready before I took a tour. It's been perfect!

A friend of mine rented in DuPont in an apartment building that was so outdated, and just 300sqft for $1200 a month. 🤦🏻♀️ So glad you found your apartment! It's gorgeousn

wow DC has changed so much since I lived there. I lived near Howard (now know as Shaw) and never heard that area described as "hip and trendy". It was one of my favorite neighborhoods I've ever lived in. This was a real cool apartment hunting video. I feel like she says the things that are in my head.
You are completely correct. I know that DC is evolving rapidly and that comes with pros and cons. Loved this video! We must have similar taste cause I'm really not interested in cookie-cutter "luxury" apartments and would definitely go for an older one with more unique features. Also agree being patient is hard, I'm currently looking around and it is so difficult to stay/be patient.

I just moved to one of the apartment complexes on DuPont a couple of months ago and I think you were right to think it’d make you depressed lol. And also people most certainly don’t make friends in the common areas (although maybe that’s just anti socials like me).

Your "what you're doing wrong" video made it onto my home page recently, which is kinda weird because I had been going down a rabbit hole on how to repair drywall stress cracks. But I'm so glad it did because I've been having the best time going back through your uploads. Congrats on your new place, and looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
East facing gets the most light in the morning, but my current apt (which is east) and another one I had in the past got pretty dark quickly in the afternoon. My other West apartments got a LOT more light in general, particularly in the afternoon/early evening. I've lived in both East and West apartments, but I've found that my West facing apartments were the brightest all day generally. Just my observation....
Do apartments in the US usually just face one direction?
@@leonore3349 From my experience, yes -- this is because I've always lived in a major city, where the streets are pretty much arranged in a grid like format and I lived in the typical tall box shaped building. People who are lucky enough to have a corner unit though often have windows on 2 sides so would benefit from multiple exposures. In NY, there are also railroad style apartments that'd also give you 2 opposite exposures -- like one south and the other north.
Oddly, i noticed some modern new builds with angled windows/sides -- I imagine that would vary the exposure --- like something that would have been east, might actually get some south exposure.
Interesting... In Portugal, most places have two fronts, usually opposite, which is great for ventilation. I just bought an apartment that faces north and south. I feel like temperature wise, it'll be like having winter and summer in the same house. Tricky. Right now I live in an apartment that is part of a block, but since it's on a corner, it's east and north facing. I feel like orientation (coupled with other variables) completely changes your living conditions and the hominess of a house.

I think you made a good choice. I’m fortunate to live in a building where both the apartments and the common spaces are good. But those common spaces were the first thing to shut down when the lockdowns started. It really made me focus my attention on making my actual apartment comfortable and functional.

I struggle with depression as well, and I've never seen anyone reference that as part of the criteria for finding a new home. It was refreshing to see and very affirming. So even though I'm just getting started, it helped to put a lot of things in perspective for me. Thank you so much for your transparency! 🙏🥰

@@Caroline_Winkler Yes do a complete before! I would love to see your design process, if there is one. Do you use a mood board or anything like that? How do you go about deciding! I so want to do my master bedroom, still have the painter grade paint from 16 yrs ago. The only room that has not been repainted. I have ideas, and have squirreled away items over the last few years, but paralyzed on where to start.

You did good and went with your gut! The apartment’s beautiful and everyone loves Dupont/the gayborhood. I lived in Glover Park for a number of years in a great one bedroom for $1250. My rent never went up and it was a steal. I had a hard time leaving it, but ultimately DC wasn’t a happy fit for me. The neighborhood rocks, though, and is underrated. Enjoy your place and being back in your hometown!
aw thanks for the support! it's crazy how cities all have their own personality and sometimes it just isnt a good fit. that was NYC for me -- i lived there for a decade and i felt like all my friends loved it and i just never fully got there. i hope you've found a place now that suits you like you deserve!
