  • In this country, many of us value our back gardens and take pleasure in visiting areas of natural beauty. This strange mindset though is far from universal in the rest of the world.

Turning lovely houses into HMOs (Homes of Multiple Occupancy) is becoming a blight on our streets.

a dodgy Indian landlord tried that on our quiet residential avenue,it lasted a year his tenants were always at each other's throats,1 ended up living there for months alone he wore a tag and accosted everyone on the street, the owner turned it back into a 4-bed house and sold it after pressure from the neighbors.

Yes HMO,s will be everywhere along with another silent creep, illegal children being dumped here. The UK government are quietly buying residential properties and turning them into childrens homes right next door to you.

Imagine not being able to see the beauty in a colder, oceanic clime. I personally think that England and Wales have some the most breathtaking landscapes and countryside in the world-- a poetic, almost melancholy sort of beauty-- and I'm not even British; there's nothing like a misty, moorland landscape, or a slumbering, frost-covered English garden in Winter, imo.
So, I genuinely can't comprehend the meaning of that "it's mostly Winter over there" comment. It's "mostly Winter", I suppose, in a state like Alaska, or British Columbia, or a country like Norway-- and those regions are world-renowned for their natural beauty.

It was heavily used by both locals, who generally arrived on organised coaches, and tourists, who mainly came in cars driven by drivers provided by the tour companies. The hotels provided packed lunches for us tourists, as well as the driver.
I was shocked to see the bus and car drivers chucking the waste from their lunches in the verges adjacent to the park, on an industrial scale. The stench of rotting food and the metres high pile of rubbish was astounding. The drivers had absolutely no idea of why this was wrong, and felt no guilt.
    It was illuminating.

Agree, I live in Harrow and my neighbours are English, they have really nice well maintained gardens in contrast most of the houses over time are sold to people from the subcontinent, the first think they will do is to pave the garden and build a summer house at the bottom of the garden. They are also big into buying and renting properties so over time lots of the houses got rented to Romanians. Now when I walk on the pavement I can see lots of rubbish strewn across the grass verge, disgusting. One thing I never figured out is why people move to this country and try to recreate the country they have left, I always thought you come over because you don't like it over there.

There were lawns that looked like the tops of snooker tables
Beautiful rose trees and the annual appearances of daffodils and tulips
Then we had ebjoying the sunshine in the summer, and the crisp winter days.
Then there was the feeding of the birds, like an episode of Rubarb, all sat on the fence, various shapes and sizes, waiting hungrily for a feast.
    Wonderful memories.
The Politicians have a lot to answer for and take a look around London and see the fly tipping there-you don't have to visit the Countryside

Yes this is what's happened on my estate. An estate that was built with decent amount of space around the houses with gardens that over time become things of beauty full of trees, flowers and wildlife. This then becomes a sought after location to live and prices reflect that desirability of the area. Then the non-indigenous well paid health worker buys one and suddenly the property is extended up to the boundaries on either side and the front garden paved over for space to park the 5 cars for the extended family living there. Gone is the lovely garden and in it's place brickwork and windows and each with a face looking out into your garden. The immediate neighbours frequently move out and they in turn receive less money for their now spoilt outlook and if the plot is big enough, more non-indigenous people move in and so the displacement begins.

Swans and Ducks 'vanishing' in parts of Epping Forest, local Houses having back garden Sheds and Garages 'converted' into unofficial 'living' areas, night time Fishing over the 'Hollow Ponds' and 'Snaresbrook Pond', Epping Forest being converted into a 'free for all Dump'.....Simon, you are describing Epping Forest and the London Borough of Waltham Forest exactly !
Fishing of course at the Hollow Ponds is not a new thing. However the type of Fishing is. When the English went fishing for Sport they kept the Fish alive in a 'Keep Net' to count at the end before releasing back into the Pond. Swans, Geese and Ducks were to be fed with Bread, especially by laughing and smiling Children. Now the reverse is true. The Birds and Fish are being captured to be roasted/fried and served for Humans. Likewise when the English go Fishing they generally take any Fishing Line and other rubbish back with them. The new type of 'Immigrant Fishing' takes the Fish and leaves the Rubbish.
Immigrant Populations have no idea of the Countryside as a resource for Beauty, Mental and Physical Health and maintaining in a virgin state for the enjoyment of all. Instead it is a resource to be exploited with no thought of its preservation for others. It's a totally selfish mentality. What can I get out of it NOW for MYSELF ! They often come from Home Countries that have been turned into a total DUMP by the indigenous population. When there is rubbish strewn everywhere, including often Human faeces, why bother preserving that 'Bloom' at the top of a pile of Crap ? I have travelled throughout Pakistan, India, North Africa etc. and have witnessed first hand the absolute 'DUNG HEAP' of human/animal faces, plastic and other waste that is strewn liberally along the Streets. Just like the scenario that I have read in history Books, when from Elizabethan times through to Victorian, people just chucked toilet and other waste out of the Window. Well it still happens today in the aforementioned Countries. The English, Irish, Welsh and Scottish evolved away from this behaviour generations ago and took delight in preserving a nice environment for the enjoyment of all.
What we can understand from this is actually the Mantra of the 'Lefty Trendies'. They emphasise the importance of Immigrant Populations in preserving their culture. They say it enriches us as British ! Well maybe the new spicy food recipe is a delight to try. Maybe ethnic Costumes are colourful and vibrant to look at. What the 'Lefties' don't seem to mention is that there are many other aspects of Immigrant culture and turning a local area into an historical recreation of a Victorian rat infested, litter strewn and disease ridden Crime Dump is one of them !

@marktyler3381 Snaresbrook was a lovely area. A real 'Village' feel with small Shops, the Eagle Pub with Forest views, great walks in Epping Forest and on the Central Tube line so easy access to central London. I grew up just the other side of the Hollow Ponds by Whipps Cross Hospital. I could literally leave my house and walk to Snaresbrook totally via Forest Land. That was in the 70s and 80s. I even quite liked to walk again to Walthamstow Market.
That entire section of London/Essex Border now is a total DUMP. An expensive one at that. As the English population declined the Crime rate soared, the Streets became filthy and dangerous and the whole area began its never ending decline to resemble a third world recreation.

Oh dear, Simon, you took a sledgehammer to that subject. The cultivation and pride taken in horticulture during the last century by our grandfathers, for example, goes deeper than a desire to show off.
If anything, the veterans of two world wars found spiritual solace in gardening. They were also inspired by the head gardeners of the big estates, these men had fed whole villages with abundant produce during hard times.
The garden symbolised community, connection to the seasons and a sense of pride in natural beauty.

While I am sure for some British gardens are a means of showing off their means, I see the British love of gardens are more an extension of their generally nature loving ang nurturing personality. I watch my elderly neighbours in their garden and watch as the husband carefully attends to their veg patch patch and the wife as she tucks in the flowers in their beds. Their garden is like a beloved pet to them - to be fed, watered and cared for by those with an abundance of paternal and maternal feelings. I was a surveyor in East London for over thirty years. I hardly ever saw a cultivated garden at an immigrant house. Most front gardens were flattened for parking, even if the car or van overshot onto the pavement, and back gardens were concreted for low maintenance. Huge, poorly built extensions were the norm and 'beds in sheds' were commonplace. I once inspected an Asian house in East Ham where the back garden has been entirely built over. The council had taken enforcement action but the owners had won on planning appeal. It must be far worse now because l have been retired for some time. Immigrant areas are little more than han shanty towns.

Gday Simon, Mate it happens here in Australia! Just one example, there was a massive PROTECTED Blue Grouper (Fish) called “Gus” he was about 40 years old. 2 Generations of fisherman and divers knew him as he was exceptionally friendly. He would come up to you and he’d rub himself on you, I had it happen to me it was pretty awesome, my kids were so excited to start snorkeling as the got abit older and hopefully meet Gus too. Well a bloke, rocked up with all the brand new gear and no idea? There are signs everywhere.. and I mean everywhere. Well he goes out, with his spear gun, Gus comes up for a pat and this Pr!€k shoots him in the head, drags this massive thing out of the water, dragging it, and the people there start losing it, he gives NO sh!ts at all, smirking etc. he starts getting abit aggressive as people were shouting at him to look at the signs the fines are $22,000! Even 6 months in prison! At first he was posing with it showing off, getting photos, being a total ass hole, so the ladies take down his car details, film him etc. and he takes off! They put it all over the national news and he is finally found…. He said he didn’t know because he’s not from Australia he’s new blah blah, he was going to get away with it but people started hassling fisheries and local council. So he finally gets fined, only $800! That’s it? And he’s allowed to pay it in instalments even though he had all the best brand new gear, nice fancy car etc? And that is only one example! I worked for fisheries when I was younger, freshwater stuff mainly. So many times we found nets strung across, protected streams with fish species so rare and endangered they only occur in that one stream. I got one bloke once he had 3 Trout cod, amd a Macquarie Perch. All totally protected. You can’t even fish in those 2 streams. They snuck in. Now these fish can live up to 80 years old (The Cod) very slow growing, like most Aussie freshwater species. 2 of those were female. I was going to set fire too their car, haha, but sadly, you aren’t allowed to do that stuff. I’ve got a hundreds of examples, you can look them up. And it’s getting worse. Cheers from Australia stay safe. Oh also, Blue Groupers are the state fish for NSW

Unfortunately our youth are becoming contaminated with this outlook. In my neighbourhood many bungalows were home to senior citizens who kept lawns and flower beds, but now many 30 year old people have moved into our area and the first thing to happen is an outside building is erected with a bar and a powerful sound system so during the Summer we are tormented by garden parties with deafening Rap and Drum & Bass music. These can go until 2am .
