Shakespeare References in Rap Lyrics: An Animated History

- Leading up to the premiere of its new series Will, TNT teamed up with Genius to present some of the best Shakespeare references in rap.
Though Shakespeare and hip-hop have a long history, certain artists have referenced the bard more than others. Most recently, JAY-Z quoted Hamlet on “Marcy Me” off of his latest album, '4:44.'
But the Brooklyn rapper’s affinity for Shakespeare goes back further than this, with a Macbeth reference on 2006’s “Do U Wanna Ride” and a Julius Caesar reference on 2013’s “FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt.”
Check the video above for a full breakdown of rap’s best Shakespeare shout outs from A Tribe Called Quest, Danny Brown, Biz Markie, 2Pac, and more. Tune in to Will on July 10, 2017 on TNT.

Shakespeare really should be on xxl next year no doubt nigga been grinding
FL4ME NATION real shit 🅱️
About 80% of the artists that referenced Shakespeare are top notch MCs
The editing is dope af in this video
Lame how they didn't mention J Cole's Line, "And even white b!tches wanna nigga, Othello" or Frank Oceans off Nike, "She must be off that white Like Othello"
No
I think Frank's line is referencing the game 'Othello' but maybe it's also a Shakespeare reference... I don't know much about the book
John Goulart It's a reference to the book, Othello, a colored man, is in love with Desdemona, a white princess, the disapproval of interracial love is emphasized throughout the story
damn good thing cause I hoped Frank wouldn't write a simple game reference line, he really one of the best lyricists rn
This wouldn't be such a shitty video if you would just play the tracks.
Bob G Nah this was still good.
One word: copyrights.
Bob G No
Bob G ikr
srdeku The law doesn't work like that. 4 second excerpts for an eductional video are definitely allowed
everyone wanna be Shakespeare😂
this animation is amazing work.
Great list - only major omission is Akala's work and that by Devon Glover aka The Sonnet Man. I'd also include 'Family Business' by Kanye West, which also references the 'all that glitters is not gold' line from The Merchant of Venice. And more recently, Lil Simz said that she's 'Jay-Z on a bad day, Shakespeare on my worst days'.
I came, I saw, I praise the Lord - Skepta is directly a reference to Julius Caesar's 'I came, I saw, I conquered'.
Akala's Comedy Tragedy History has 43+ Shakespeare references in it, and you didn't even mention it? What a surprise.
This video made me want to read The Merchant of Venice, so thanks for that. & I Actually think this is so dope & could help in classrooms. At least it'll make it more interesting/relatable for some.
Is it me, or are a lot of these just common phrases?
Edit: As in, not intentional references to Shakespeare. I thought that that was implied, but I guess not.
Yeah they are, thanks to Shakespeare
Obviously, but I don't think that they were intentional references.
Minet Tht kinda proves this videos point even more wow
Yeah, I doubt most of them are actually Shakeaspere references
Yes phrases that Shakespeare created lol
LOVE THISSS
i like the visuals
Yovani Anindya I like your face and head wrap 😎
most of these are just common everyday Phrases. Tupac lines are the only ones that I can say was referencing Shakespeare
Tupac is inspired by Shakespeare so therefore Shakespeare is very influnteial in music
Shakespeare is influential in the domain, and many others, regardless of Tupac lmao
Shakespeare saved hip hop
How you gonna make a video about Shakespeare and hip-hop and not mention Akala?
some of these are just common phrases rappers coincidentally used, I don't think they are all references
John Goulart they weren't common phrases until they were in Shakespeare's plays
I know of course but I'm saying these rappers may not even know they were making the reference because they were just saying a common phrase. The lines pay homage to Shakespeare of course because he made them common but I'm saying some of these lines the rappers were probably unaware of their reference
nice edits
Watching this during quarantine for english lol
that's cool!
Seems like Tupac digged English theater
A lot of these are reaches. They may have been in some of Shakespeares' writings, but I doubt that that's where the rappers drew inspiration from for their lines.
"Even white women want a nigga; Othello"
-J Cole
"Final answer "not to be", "not to be" is right!" by Aesop Rock should have been mentioned I think
YES!
I didn't know the "wearing heart on the sleeves" came from Shakespeare. TIL
How can you not mention akala when talking about shakespeare and rap
i dont think genius really acknowledge British rap
"England is my city, and if it weren't for team 10, then the U.S would be shitty. That's why we stay litty" - Nick Crompton, Top 10 U.K rapper. jk I know UK got great and even better artists than some U.S rappers
Lite Reazon Black Americans in America made rap music so I shall always respect them
Though I live in Korea
Don't mind me, just came to see if DOOM made it.
he dead
MF DOOM is light years ahead of Shakespeare with rhymes, metaphors, entendres, allegories etc.
Shakespeare with the bars.
👌👌👌💯💯💯
This is a great video, and I would love to show it to my students. However, the foul language is a problem. It would be wonderful if there was a "clean" or "censored" version of this video.
Similar boat. Great video, but a few choice verses would get me in trouble for using it, sadly.
Yesss
Dr Octagon: "Shakespeare is God, don't even think about it."
You forgot canibitch oh canibitch wherefore art thou canibitch
Intermental go hard
Did y'all upload this Cus of Jay Z's hamlet verse?
You gotta mention Akala. Rap isn't just in America anymore.
Brian O'Meara but black Americans made rap music
JIMINS BUTTHOLE STINKS so just because they made it doesn't mean anything akala is known for talking about Shakespeare his song comedy tragedy history he references like 20 Shakespeare plays and U.K. rap is far better than USA now
Akala is an irrelevant hippy conspiracy theorist loving commie
dam shakespeare wildin
Bras' line was easily the worst 😂
U forgot about "Melle mel-Step off" Shakespeare reference. "I'm like Shakespeare, Imma pioneer, I made rap something people wanted to hear"
''i" is hardly a Shakespeare reference, it's a popular saying
mention othello, i go "oh shit that shit looks like DOOM's mask and in that song he references it", and then the fucking lyrics come up and im going hard as a motherfucker screaming "ONLY GOT CONFRONTED BY THE BEAST WITH TWO BACKS"
what's the purpose behind not closing the quotation? i'm curious as to if that has anything to do witta a rule of literature. somebody @ genius, pls help lol
Mozart has been real quiet since this has drop
If you put the speed to 1.25 it actually sounds like he's rapping the lines rather than just reading them
aye 3therd one
Name of the awesome track? thanks.
Everyone knows the "im a poet to some a regular modern day Shakespeare
A lot of rappers also reference the philosopher Socrates
what about SZA - Child's Play??
Shakespeare really was dat nigga
Where's 50cent's "No Romeo, No Juliet"?
I’m in a online class lol
never saw a lil pump bar
William Shakespeare is the shit!!!!
To blaze or not to blaze that is the question?
3/4 of these rapper's references they know from common phrases and sayings.... they wouldn't even know its Shakespearean.
Alriight
2pac three time fuck yeah nigga
this shows that Pac was a real legend
What about lil pump on d rose?
Wait I don’t understand
Why does the Shakespeare vector look like a puppy?

Heard there's no proof of Shakespeare even existing 🤔
