That's How Restaurants Rip You Off

  • How do restaurants cheat customers? Yep, even fancy and expensive restaurants sometimes do that to make more money. First of all, you should know exactly how much you tip the waiter since some dishonest workers can charge you more than you specified. Another way restaurants may get a little richer at your expense is a fake menu.

    SUMMARY:
    - There are dishonest workers who, upon getting the receipt and seeing how much you’d like to leave as a tip, have no problem changing it to an amount they deem more suitable.
    - Write down the tip and total amount, and either ask your waiter to make a physical copy for you or simply take a picture of your receipt before you leave.
    - The first rule of safety and security is to never ever let your card be taken away from you. If a waiter doesn’t bring the POS terminal to you but asks you to give them your card, it’s best to refuse or get up and walk to the register with them.
    - It’s not customary for a waiter to assume their tip is included in the amount they were given, yet some of them simply “forget” to come back with the change in hopes you’ll want to avoid confrontation.
    - Another way restaurants may get a little richer at your expense is a fake menu. In this case, you should immediately call the manager and ask them to explain the situation.
    - One thing you can do is simply ask the waiter to leave the menu for you in case you want to order something else. If they insist on taking it for some reason, though, this should serve as a red flag that something’s not right.
    - Many places use coupons and flyers to lure customers in and let them know there are some amazing offers on their food.
    - If you fall for such a thing, make sure you first check all the fine print on the piece of paper in your hands. Some coupons might already be expired!

It's not bias, it's reality. Servers get fired if a customer calls and said they were charged more money than they tipped, even if its only $1 more, so it simply isn't worth losing your job over an extra couple of dollars. @Super Cool

    • @breshaunbutler8904
      @breshaunbutler8904 5 лет назад

@Super Cool It doesn't have to be taken to a manager from a customer. We have bookkeepers who look at every single tip receipt every night to make sure that nothing looks edited or adjusted and then if so, someone is fired. And many customers will take the issue to a manager if they also assume their card information has been copied in order to prevent further misuse.

Which is why the narrator clearly just said that certain restaurants would never do this but for you to act so unaware as though this doesn't happen because you haven't experienced it it's like someone saying well I've never been shot before so I'm sure that someone else could never get shot. it's like just because you didn't have that experience doesn't mean that I can't care for someone else because I just seen this on the news actually at a famous movie theater in Georgia it was called the fork and screen and also at the fork and screen at the Phipps Plaza

I think it does still happen, but maybe not as often as Bright Side makes it sound like it does. I'd say maybe 1-2% of the time, do these types of things happen. Not often. I've been traveling around the US for work and vacations for the past 20 years and never had an y such issues listed here in the video, but that's not to say it doesn't happen to others.

I serve. First of all, serving is really tough. And this is a fair video of things to look out for. But honestly in the chain restaurants they don't put up with scams and have a lot of internal mechanisms to prevent these examples. Frankly, the chains are too busy for the server to even bother doing these things. Timing is everything to a server and it's not worth the mental gymnastics to think of scamming. Especially when you work at a place that has automatic gratuity like I do. Of course people have been fired for trying to be slick. But most people don't like looking for new jobs, especially if they can't use their old one as a reference because of termination for scamming. It just isn't worth it to the server to scam.

@@BRIGHTSIDEOFFICIAL This is weak. While I will not deny that those things happen, I would appreciate some background on your sources. People in the service industry get so so much shade, and this videos feels unmerited. Now, whenever I go to work as a server, I also have to worry that one of the over 10k viewers that may have seen this and how they will judge me before I even approach the table. Can we try to little harder to tell a better narrative? There are all kinds of things that restaurants do outside of wait staff to pull in more money. You do realize those servers have managers and owners that are less visible, but more responsible for the guest's experience and integrity of the staff. Maybe focus on that department and hold them to task on answering for his behavior when it does occur.

Your advice about not letting the waiter/waitress get their hands on your credit card should be well taken. A while back there was a new waitress in a restaurant I always went to who volunteer to take my credit card and check to the register to save me the effort. The very next day my credit card company notified me someone over 50 miles away attempted to make an extremely large purchase in a Sears store. They denied the charge telling me a) it was an excessively large amount , b) why would I drive over 50 miles to use that Sears store when I had a Sears store less than 3 miles away from my home. I really appreciated their diligence in protecting me.

The woman behind the counter said that we get 2 adult tickets for 16,5£ and a child ticket for free. The total was 33£. When we boarded the train, we realized that she lied about the price and she sold us 3 adult tickets for 11£ each.

One I've seen, a waiter will come to you, smile, hand you a menu, and leave a glass of water on the table for each of you. When they take your order they are suddenly out of the cheap thing you ordered, but can they substitute it for something else (more expensive) . Then they ask what you'd like to drink, say tea. They will come back often with "shall I refill your drink". Then you end up billed not just for the refill, but for the, what you thought was gratuitous, water you didn't even touch.

I nearly always pay cash in stores and restaurants, mainly to avoid having to monitor my plastic accounts. The downside to that though, is not so much about chasing the server for change, I never had to,, but some restaurants will not declare it and thus not pay their fair share of taxes. Servers have a tough job and most do it very well!! What really bugs me though!!? is when the server asks "will you need change?". If I didn't need change I'd say so! Once in a while too, someone will round the change out to favor themselves (talking dimes here, not dollars). Thanks to this video I'll be more vigilant when using a card. I definitely eat at home more than I used to... spend the money on more important things. And eat healthier. I really don't understand the widespread fixation with putting everything on plastic. Heck, it costs the merchant $$ and it opens us up to card exposure. It's very time consuming to have to reconcile the account and when a problem comes up , what a pain in the rear and aggravating to resolve it. If you can! So cash is my preference. After all, we're paying one way or another! And there's less temptation to overspend. Just my opinion.

My girl was a waitress and said they don't tolerate dishonest and I always get a copy of my receipt. That way I know what they take out matches what I did. They have never brought the machine around when you pay? It's really a lot of trust we give them when we give them your card but be smart and just watch for it to come out of your account. If you tip respectfully, they'll want to have you return and even wait on you again. People that are grumpy, mean, or annoying.. The waitress will try her hardest to make everything go right because that's how they make their extra money!! There is a lot of difficult customers but on the other side, is a bigger handful of really nice customers as well. I rarely get a nasty, grumpy, and or mean waitress. When I have, sadly there's just something going wrong in her day or something. You just be as kind as you can and get through it. 9 times out of 10, you're going to turn things around for them. You just be nice and tip respectfully because it's how they make a living. They don't want to be mean to you so you will stiff them. They don't get anything for that..

I can say from experience that servers changing their tip isn't that easy to do, or something I've ever heard just a few times. The restaurant requires proof of the receipt for the credit card tip, and they are checked to make sure the amounts match. Even in cases where people don't do the correct math, the restaurant asked you to add tip to the total amount for their bill. So whatever they put there is all there's except for the extra, left for the server(so if the amount doesn't equal when the tip is calculated) the server has to go according to what the bill payer's calculated total. Wait-staff are usually only paid in tips, and the 2 dollars they make is simply for taxation. They make what they walk out of the door with each shift. When a person tips on a credit card the server then has to go through extra taxes. If a person tips below 10% or not at all, the server has to pay taxes on the meal they just ate. And in some cases these tips may have to come in the form of a check at the end of the week on the end of the calendar month

I heard of a scam servers pulled at a popular Italian franchise (though it could happen anywhere). They would print a lot of receipts for a common lunch: soup and salad and a drink. Since the server prepared those and not the kitchen, there was no accountability: the next person to order that common meal would get a reprinted receipt and be asked (with some lame excuse) to pay cash. All the cash went right in their pocket instead of the till, since that meal was never officially rung up and/or checked by the kitchen.

I worked for a restaurant that added %15 to the price of the meal and gave that 15% to the servers while the servers also got whatever tip the person left. They did this because some people weren't leaving tips so the owner decided to add the tip to the cost of the meal without telling the customer they were being forced to tip while other people are tipping twice.

The other thing to watch out for, and this isn't necessarily "illegal" or stealing, but the restaurants that build gratuity into their pricing. For example, some will have policies that with groups over 10 people, a 15% gratuity is automatically added. Just be aware of this so you don't pay an additional 20% gratuity (unless you want to) by accident. The places that have had this, have had it in small print on the bottom of the menu or on the back, so double check. Again, this only really applies to high-end restaurants and/or when dining in larger groups at some mid/high-end restaurants.

Not only restaurant that they charge over, I noticed a grocery shop and in five different occasions, specially during x mess they charged for every veggies double or triple , the reason I caught them is that I always read my receipt after I shop, so no SUCCESS on me, each time I caught them legally stealing from customer, they replied it was a mistake, but wondering for other poor people , totally rip off by them.

I’ve enjoyed reading some of the comments. It’s interesting, in my case there’s a family owned a bar and Grill across the street from my apartment complex, and I always give them my debit card. So far, they’ve never ripped me off. I also need to mention that I am totally blind and trust them with it when they go scan it. I always double check my bank later to make sure that what I paid and also what I tipped came out of my account. I’ve never had an issue.
I’m not traipsing with them to the register that’s for sure. Again, a number of the waitstaff know me by sight and sound I’ll be by name.
But like somebody else said especially if it’s a chain restaurant, there’s a lot of internal things to prevent stuff like this from happening. And also, with the age of social media and the Internet restaurants don’t want bad reviews or the fact that they’re being ripped off.
Patrons that is being ripped off.

I really find it weird that tips are a must in the US. Where I live you can tip the waiter if you'd like, usually if you are satisfied and want to show it, but it isn't considered mandatory. Waiters are getting paid for what they do by the employer who is paid by the costumer.
