I think this kid's understanding of belt progression will change over the years. He's still super young and will have a greater explanation of the progression as he matures.

I will never understand why somebody would start training leg locks at brown belt. You basically create brown belts with a white belt leg lock game.

I guess for people who think being "blue belt world champion" means anything, the focus on the IBJJF ruleset kind of makes sense. If you're not a hardcore competitor then it's ridiculous to wait till brown belt to start seeing openings for toe holds or knee bars. It's a bit counterproductive to start chasing these subs before mid-blue belt, as you have more fundamental things to learn, but waiting for brown belt to go for leg locks is silly for 95% of practitioners.

Maybe, maybe not. I would argue that it will be easier for a brown belt to learn new concepts than it would be for a white belt to learn new concepts.

@@arturofernandez725 I absolutely agree. And in the safe environment of your own gym that shouldn't be a problem at all - but I think we can agree that a newly promoted brown belt on his first tournament, running into someone trained in leg locks since his first "advanced" classes at blue belt or even few stripes white belt, will not be eye to eye, and, worst case scenario, won't recognise a thread early enough and get liganments snapped or bones broken.

Great 👍🏼 stuff - one advantage to being an old guy not doing tournaments is I’ve been using and defending leg locks before brown belt - obvious disadvantages as well I know 😂

SMH been training leg locks since I was a white belt. Everyone needs to know how to reap and leglock. Offensively and defensively.
