There's SO MUCH MORE to say about Jem! The playsets were functional devices! A speaker! A radio! The music was shockingly good! The voice cast was iconic! The original Jem doll had light up earrings, just like in the show. Mine still works! Barbie gonna Barbie, but Jem was pure class!

Jem and the Holograms is still one of my all time favorite cartoon series! The story, the characters, the music, the voice actors all fit together so perfectly. I also love how the show had music, drama, romance and even action all mixed together. I do wish they'd make a new line with the dolls looking like the actual cartoon characters in their original outfits. The characters in Jem were all so pretty. Also, a complete soundtrack would be much appreciated. ❤❤❤

I used to be team Barbie in this debate, but after the Toys That Made Us episode I had to take Jem's side. My sister and I had 4 Jem dolls and 4 dancing Rockers, but I thought Jem was a better cartoon than a toyline. My first Integrity Toys doll was Riot from Jem because I was binging reruns and got interested the character since he was the only male singer but he never got a doll in the 80s. Barbie botched that Rockers reboot, then OMG came up behind them and killed it with Remix.

To be honest, Jem was a better show, but I thought the dolls were slightly ugly. Not just because they made them bigger which is probably why they cost more than Barbie, but the facial expressions were off for me.

The Dolls themselves were of top quality !
    Those fluo fashions,crazy haïr,outrageous make-up !!!
They were FULLY poseable and could even cross legs and hold their accessories...
And...those BOXES !!!Pure ART with flashy colors and beautiful portraits of each character.
And who Can forget those tapes including three songs...the latter were beautifuly written and some songs have definitely become hit singles aming fan like "Depends on the mood I am","I am a giant","I like your style"or"Glitter and gold"...
Last but not least,thé greatest innovation were the playsets!!!
Guitars ,cars and keybords that turned into tape player or FM radios!!
The JEM backstage that turned into a speaker or those Video madness mini playsets that could turn the JEM stage into video backgrounds to recreate some of our favourite video clips !!

Rumor has it that Hasbro had a Jem doll box at a trade show in Asia around Nov of 1985. After the show the Hasbro sales person throw the box away and the Mattel sales person went through the garage and shipped the Jem doll box back to California. The Misfits are not pictured on the Jem box, so it sounded like the Misfits were a complete surprise to Mattel. I was told this by a Hasbro employee who was told by a friend who worked at Mattel - after the Toys That Made Us, I tracked down Judy, but she said it was only a phone call. But yes, the ethnicities of the dolls are just to similar and really the clothing silhouettes are too. Example the Asian American Hologram had a t-shirt, fish-scale skirt, and tights while the African American Rocker had a t-shirt, skirt and tights with pattern similar to the fish-scales. Some of the jackets and colors of clothing are similar but mixed up for other dolls - Barbie’s colors being bright is rumored to be because the illustrations on that Jem box were much brighter than the actual Jem doll fabrics. First year Rocker playsets were all reused from the 70’s, so Mattel could get them into production quickly. Jem had the piano stage in 1986, but the Rockers had the Cafe with the guitar shape in 1987 and Jem had the KJEM radio station with pretend guitar the same year. I love this topic obviously 😂. Oh, the cartoon coming out 6 months before the doll was to make it look like dolls were inspired by the cartoon. There was already a big backlash to cartoons being based on toy lines.

      @riot4jem Год назад +2

@@bamblerz yeah they had the cartoon and it started airing in October of 1985, before the dolls were announced at the February 1986 Toy Fair. That was to make it look like the dolls were based on the cartoon instead of the other way around. So Mattel could have looked to see what new Sunbow/Hasbro cartoons were out and known that another toy company wouldn’t just pay for a cartoon that didn’t support s toy line. 😂

Something interesting about Jem and the Holograms is that while it came out in 1985, coincidentally, there was a magical girl anime that came out in Japan two years prior called "Mahou no Tenshi Creamy Mami" (Creamy Mami, The Magic Angel) which was also about a girl who transformed into a pop star with her identity being kept secret, and this paved the way for other magical girl anime with this concept. So, between America, Japan and possibly other countries this premise had already been done several times by the time Hannah Montana existed.

And those SONGS!! So much love went into the whole production and it’s evident throughout the whole run of the show. As their target demographic, I had Barbie, Jem, and Maxie dolls 😆 as a kid, it didn’t matter to me which one came out first. And while I enjoyed the Barbie and the Rockers movie, at six years old, I found it incredibly corny that the plot revolved around a world peace concert that was to take place on a floating flower in space. Jem had its share of cheesiness, but it never went that far off the mark. It’s interesting that Mattel felt so threatened because Jem was only ever going to be a rockstar themed doll where as Barbie’s schtick is that “you can do anything“. Where I think the Jem doll suffered the most was their size. You could use a Jem outfit on a Barbie doll but most of the time Barbies clothes did not fit Jem. Where Jem excelled was the inclusion of the Misfit dolls and the extra outfits that you could buy because they were the same outfits that you saw in episodes so you could recreate scenes from the show.

This was a great watch! I had Jem and all of the Holograms when they came out. I had the stage as well. My parents got sick of me carrying that stage around blasting their songs (the stage was a tape player and it had a shoulder strap so you could carry it.) I wish I still had these dolls.

The new Barbie and the Rockers dolls are tacky not in a good way, I wished they just used the same outfit inspiration from the original released line and making it a bit modern with a bit of 80's edge instead of making a new one that looks like they're wearing a cheap 80's Halloween costume.

So Jem is wayyyyy before my time but my mom always gushed about the show and I remember her showing me some clips on youtube (alongside some other nostalgic shows like Thundercats which I also loved) and loving everything about her. Later on Hasbro released The Hub channel and my life was CHANGED. I adored Jem so much. The music, the animation, the characters. *chef kiss* and Rio was such a heartthrob lol. I wish they’d do a more affordable reboot of Jem dolls as impossible as that may be. I would love to own one so much 🥹

Dear Joey! I cant thank you enough for this wonderful video. I was absolutley thrilled about Jem and the Hologrames, when I watched the cartoon on Fun Factory in 1986. I was madly in love with Jem and I purchased a RIO doll with my pocket money I got for Christmas. But I was not allowed to have dolls. I did it secretly I hide RIO under my bed, so my dad couldt discover my new doll-friend. I loved the cartoon and always had fond memories, when I grew up. In 2013 I bought the complete series on DVD. As you can see, I always played in team JEM.

I was a kid when all of this took place and while Mattel's Barbie and the Rockers ultimately won the doll rivalry against Hasbro's Jem and the Holograms; Jem won way more fans who are still very much fans to this day all because of the series.
As far as the dolls themselves it was very easy to see how Mattel was able to beat Hasbro. Fashion doll lines was already in Mattel's wheelhouse. Not so much for Hasbro. As much as I am a Jem fan I can easily admit Mattel's Barbies were just better looking than Hasbro's Jem dolls, when it came to the dolls faces, hair and clothes. Even today Hasbro simply can't compete against Mattel in that area. Prime example, Mattel's Ever After High dolls and Hasbro's Descendants dolls; EAH put Descendants to shame in comparison. (At least when EAH first started off before Mattel decided to go cheap on the line).
As I said before, though Barbie and the Rockers beat Jem and the Holograms in toy sales, the Rockers are merely a footnote in Barbie's toyline history. Whereas Jem is still very much loved and fondly remembered by fans of the animated series today. I am one of them. I will soon turn 50 later this month and I still from time to time listen to the music from the series on RUclips. Years ago when the entire series was released on DVD, I quickly bought it. Had the movie stuck to the actual concept of Jem and not veered off to appeal to a younger audience who don't give a crap about Jem, I and a lot of other Jem fans would have supported it greatly. Jem will always hold a special place in my childhood memories. Barbie and them so-called Rockers couldn't then and will NEVAH come close to doing so today!!

Jem also had a playset that turned into a giant guitar -It's the KJEM playset which became a radio/recording studio for the dolls. A lot of the Jem playsets transformed and had dual identities just like Jem! The Rock backstager playset was Jems backstage dressing room, but also closed down to look like a giant speaker -the speaker worked and could be hooked up to Jem's car which was a working FM radio. The Star stage playset was a working cassette player.

Jem and I go WAY back to the 80s. I owned a few back then, and then around 10 years later in the beginning of 2000, people were having an 80s flashback, buying, selling and trading Jem dolls either through eBay or Jem websites. I ended up almost buying them all, then later sold or gave them away and now I just have Synergy. I remember people hoping a Jem live action movie would be made and then later a movie was made but with horrible reviews so terrible the producers or directors were getting death threats from fans.. Barbie and the Rockers was one of my first Barbie dolls and seems like they're getting some hype because of the Barbie movie coming up. Hot Topic has some Rockers merchandise, but I'm looking at getting some of the dolls instead

Dancing Rocker Barbie was my first Barbie when I was 3. I loved her to bits. Still have her even, named her Melissa after one of my friends, but called her Lissa not Missy, so it wasn't "weird". 😂 Never had a Jem, too poor, but I got one NIB as an adult for my anniversary 5 years ago. And you even talked a bit about Maxie and Jazzie! Oh, my heart! TBH late 80's Jazzie and teen Skipper had the cutest face molds and paints because they were initially designed as a part of the MABA Barbie line in Japan before that deal fell through and they are so cute. 80's Skipper face molds before that were...uh...not amazing. I'll leave it at that. I'd love a deeper dive on them one day though!

My sister and I had a big collection of Barbies when we were young. My aunt bought us that first Jem doll. We made her into the special needs character in our play scenarios since we thought she fit the “big and dumb” stereotype. Even though she was different, our other dolls always treated her kindly. Little did we know that decades later, that original Jem would be selling for crap tons of money. I wish we’d saved her.

Thanks so much for bringing me back to my childhood. I grew up in The 80's and I Loved both Barbie and The Rockers And Jem. Barbie and The rockers Barbie was my very favorite doll as a kid. Unfortunately I lost her when we moved and I was so upset. Thankfully sometime in the 2000's( Not sure what year) Mattel rereleased some of their decade dolls and she was one of them so although I wasn't a kid anymore I had to get her. I had never owned a Jem Doll but a few years back I found a doll of my favorite Jem Character on Ebay and I had to buy her. It was Jetta from the Misfits and she wasn't in the box and She was missing her shoes but I wanted her. Now both dolls sit on a shelf with some other dolls.

I knew very well Jem came first. The quality of Jem dolls were far superior than barbie & the rockers. I wish I could’ve bought the integrity versions but missed the boat. Jem will always hold a special place in my heart. I got 3 holograms for my bday in 1986. I get so emotional 😢god I love Jem so much. I got Danse and Rock’n’ Curl in 87. My heart is breaking as I type this. The music, the dolls and the fashion OMG it was heaven for my 9 y/o child ❤️❤️❤️
