- This monumental summer townscape was painted following one of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell’s many trips to Italy and pays homage to the monumental and historic significance of Lucca’s Renaissance wall.
Stephen Tomlin, the main focus of our current exhibition Bloomsbury Stud: The Art of Stephen Tomlin, admired the Bloomsbury group, to which he was introduced by the novelist David Garnett at the age of twenty-two: within a short time he was on terms of close friendship with many of its leading figures, including Duncan Grant, Lytton Strachey (whose niece, Julia Strachey, he married), Dora Carrington and John Maynard Keynes.
Duncan was in fact among Stephen Tomlin’s long list of lovers: ‘You are at the moment no doubt sitting in the arms of Tommy’, Vanessa wrote to him in 1923, a year before Tomlin started working on his bust of Duncan.
This painting, as well as Duncan’s bust, are currently on display at the gallery as part of our Bloomsbury Stud exhibition.

Another great brief and tasty art experience. Wouldn't I love to own a Duncan Grant. Oh yeah.
It looks like he was channeling Cézanne in this one.
Thank You, Philip and crew.
Very poignant to mention, "A room with a view".
Nice scenery from real life experience😊 Surly want to be Italy myself🇳🇴
Brilliant sun and the relief of deep shade well captured
Yes, it would be quite a tricky one to execute - the close foreground with the distant view beyond - it’s a marvellous composition and he’s pulled it off admirably.
It's an interesting and effective composition; both formally and psychologically. However, the mark making is quite dense.
