- Today we're in Turkey's Kurdish capital city of Diyarbakir, or Amed as the locals call it.
Now Diyarbakir is a city with a sad past. Only recently in 2015 there was a nasty civil war which destroyed the old city and displaced many.
Despite this we found the locals to be incredible and the classic Kurdish hospitality showed its face as always.
We spent the day wandering the old streets, meeting some of the kindest local people and eating some of the country's most delicious foods!
Turkey's big kurdish city of Amed is pure class.

I am a Kurd from Turkey and when we speak our language here, people tell us that this is Turkey, speak Turkish. At the same time, they use the name of our race as a swear word in this country, they say things like eww Kurdish. It is difficult to speak our own language here. Kurds cannot use their own flag here. The Kurdish flag is called a terrorist flag here. Kurds are in need of love. When they see someone who loves and respects them, they love that person. Hi Elis & Alicia.... Beautiful old city and I reckon it more touristy place, but maybe while you there not peak season for tourist. Bluestone on alleyway very similar with alleyway in Melbourne. Mostly alley covered with bluestone.... Minutes scene at tabacco factory bring back my memory when I was kid. I remember my late grandmom used to have small tabacco farm. When the leaf turning yellow colour, i help her harvest and dry the leafs for a few days. After that she will slice it fine using traditional cutter, dry again till turn exactly the same you see in the factory.... Again great episode 👍👍👍👍👍. Be safe my friends.

Read on the forced Turkification era where Kurds, Armenians, Greeks and other ethnicities were FORCED to call themselves “Turkish” and were forced to only speak “Turkish” by means of torture, imprisonment and other inhumane means … and don’t forget the numerous massac4es the Kurds faced as a result of their resistance.
This era just recently eased and EVEN Today, Kurds in Northern Occupied Kurdistan are persecuted, mass imprisoned and ki44ed for defending their ethnic identity.
Respect to our Armenian brothers also.
Bro kurdish language was banned for 5 generations, even kurdish names for kids. There was a lot of assimilation you can’t even imagine. My mom would tell us to not speak kurdish in public when we were kids and me and many of my childhood friends from the village were beaten at school because we spoke kurdish at school !!!
In 80 ies just saying you’re not turk and a kurd was punishable by 7 years of prison 🤷♂️
