the funniest thing about this video is how quintessentially northern european you are with showing off your dark green candles, its so cute, and as a lebanese person who grew up with candles being a symbol of poverty and general nation wide economic collapse, i find it really endearing and lovely
The Raven Cycle is literally your vibe: magical forest, very atmospheric, vivid and dreamlike (pun intended), found family. I cannot recommend it enough!!!!!
YES!!! the craziest thing tho is that a few years ago she said in a video that she began TRB and stopped after the FIRST chapter cuz she thought she would't like it :(
As an Erin Morgenstern, Neil Gaiman and T. Kingfisher unofficial spokesperson I can't WAIT for you to read these books, you're going to have so much fun. The autumn vibes are unmatched.
Don't move to Spain or the south of Europe in general. I live in Spain and there's no autumn, like maybe 2 weeks depending of the year. I need more autumn vibes😢
Wuthering Heights is the perfect book if you hate yourself and everyone around you, and desperately wish to punish yourself for 9 hours straight 😅 (I truly DESPISED this book more than the characters did each other 😂)
I laughed SO HARD at the Jane Eyre shame story. Honestly iconic. Also, like another commenter, I too get very jealous at people from the northern hemisphere around this time of year with their cold weather and orange leaves. We only get hot, humid and floods. However, I will still make an "autumn tbr" out of spite for nature.
If it makes you feel any better half of us have the orange leaves for 5 minutes (if at all) and then it’s bitter cold, grey, icy wasteland for 7 months solid 😂
If the Assistant Villain is a bust, I recommend you check out Hench by Natalie Zina Walschot. It's about an accountant who gets very badly injured by a superhero on a rescue mission and then she realizes that superheroes actually do more damage than is justified by their heroism, so she joins one of the mastermind villains to try and stop them. It's very good and I really enjoyed the concept!
Crime and punishment is a hard book in itself even for those who knows the language. We had to read it in school and our teacher also asked us to read another book, which is like a guide to get through the symbolism in C&P. Most of the classics we read felt tedious, after all it's different when you're reading not for entertainment, but more for thinking, but the one thing I liked about high school is that this teacher, despite being very demanding, she managed to create interesting projects, like several groups did mapping for different battles from War And Peace, or we put up a small play for another author stuff like that.
@@jmsl_910 oh dear, I wish I could help you with it, but I don't remember (it was a little too long ago) and many of my notes from school were disposed of. Also I highly doubt this book has a translation into other languages. BUT! Not to leave you on a sad note I can share few things I remember. The numerology in the book is connected to church/religion. The red colors are obvious, the yellow colors are about madness, because asylums were painted in yellow. I don't remember if it was in the book or part of the discussion (prob both) that you could perceive his meticulousness in details, how he knows the route by heart, to the number of steps on a staircase, till the moment Raskolnikov kills. There is also detail about the blunt and sharp side of the axe to show his state. Well, there are many more, but I remember too little.
@@Givebackthescarf But novels then and novels now actually do tend to explore the gray area of some characters, aren't they? I feel like I've said something too obvious, but! With C&P the whole novel, as we often repeated during the class, can be squeezed into a phrase (loosely translated as) - am I a lowly shivering beast or I have the right. You know in many cases modern villains go step by step from the bottom of society and they were also poverty-driven one day. It's a pity that English doesn't distinguish between two words нищета and бедность, which both can be translated as poverty, but they have a bit different meaning and Dostoevsky himself has a quote about the two, that "poverty (бедность) is not a sin, but poverty (нищета) is", since the second one when a person, according to him, loses the last bit of human dignity. Of course such things can't really impress a modern reader, yet I still think it's worth exploring how authors tried to explore such topics back then.
definitely save The Starless Sea for winter!! the beginning of the book takes place in the winter and the rest of the book is super cozy. The Night Circus is a great winter read too if you haven't read it yet!
I just finished The Assistant to the Villain and found to to be light and charming. It’s incredibly adorable. Perfect for early cozy reading. Nettle and Bone is just as charming and one of my favorites. Both are super quick reads in my own opinion. Have fun!
I am loving this autumnal content 🍂 it’s my favorite reading season as well, and I’ve already busted out all of my cardigans 🕯️ Interview with the Vampire is a solid read. To this day, it is the only book that genuinely spooked me while reading it
that turtleneck, the auburn hair and imagining that the cup has pumpkin spice latte has the whole aesthetic of fall. You're just making me jealous girl !
Just when I thought I couldn't like you anymore--Autumn books are amazing! I agree with your parameters--spooky, academic, forest-related etc. For me too, certain historical fiction writers, especially ones involving Native Americans, also gives me an Autumn vibe.
“a far wilder magic “ by Allison Saft is a very autumnal book! I was actually pleasantly surprised when I read it. I also think “Smoke” by Dan Vyleta, “the blacktongue thief” by Christopher Buhleman , “ Jonathan strange & mr norell” by Susanna Clarke and “perfume” by Patrick Süskind really suit the season as well🍂
i totally recommend adding A Dowry of Blood to your autumn reading list! it's beautifully written, very autumnal and explores abusive relationships so well! the audiobook is fantastic too
Please please read “The Starless Sea” . It is a perfect autumn book ( perfect book in general). The vibes, the magic, the characters, the writing ! And the ending!? I’ve read hundreds of books but the starless sea is in my top 5 .
The Starless Sea is a book that is so close to my heart. But I think of it more as a winter read, not sure if that's because of the few snowy scenes, or because I read it then.
Omg Leonie I hope you LOVE The Starless Sea!!! My favorite book ever! As you said, Erin Morgenstern is a STAR when it comes to writing atmosphere and the atmosphere of The Starless Sea is EVERYTTHIIIINGGG TO MEEEEE!!!!
Belladonna was really fun. Very YA feel, but a super fun gothic story. I very much recommend for a quick, fun, easy read. Rebecca is super fall. More of a slow pace because it's all about slowly building tension.
the way a book is translated totally impacts enjoyment. and I LOVED nettle & bone and slewfoot, I've read in the beginning of the year, and they are in my top 10 of 2023
Blood Dowry, Juniper and Thorn, Mexican Gothic were perfect for fall/Halloween! Thank so much your book recommendations are just what I need for Fall 🍂
the way i've never experienced autumn season my entire life but still got excited when i saw the title of this vid 🤩 cozy fantasy is my fav as well so i just knew autumn is the superior season based on the vibes ☝️☝️
The most autumnal book I've ever read is A far wilder magic 🍁🍂 highly, highly recommend! It's a fantasy romance with beautiful writing and amazing atmosphere 🧡
I also recommend Daughter of the forest! However this one is quite dark so check trigger warnings beforehand. It has this looming sense of sadness throughout the story and once again the writing style is amazing :)
Interview with the vampire is such a must! It’s the perfect combination of gothic vibe, philosophic conversations and a touch of quirkiness from the whole concept in itself. Though it gets a little slow in the second part, it quickly picks up again towards the end! One of my favorites!
Idk if you've read it, but Jonathan Strange and mister Norrell screams autumn to me. It's a wonderful book! Historical fantasy, if you like. It's a massive book, but it's totally worth it, and it's a standalone, which we like to see.
I picked up Assistant to the Villian a couple weeks ago and after I got home I read the author bio and saw it started on TikTok and I was instantly worried. However, by page five, I was laughing out loud. I really enjoyed it, easily one of my favorite this year. This is clearly going to be a series, though, and ends on a cliffhanger, so just be aware. I can't wait for the next one.
For you candles..if they are not wide enough, light a match and heat up bottom of candle until wax begins to barely melt…then put it in the candle holder straight and hold it straight while wax hardens..
it's so cute how she said taming of the shrew but meant turn of the screw, and called it spooky, lol (taming of the shrew is technically a comedy) you gotta get on Annihilation, that book is so trippy, lol,
I think you will really like Belladonna, its a period/fantasy book that's a romance but also primarily a thriller :) I enjoyed it last Autumn and need to get my hands on Foxglove now ☺🍂
I love how you upload this right when summer is giving an encore. I'm currently reading The Honeys by Ryan La Sala and it also kinda reminds me of Bunny, but it's set at a summer camp so it's perfect for right now. And it's queer 👌
Leonie picking up the epic fantasy books and saying that they're just not cosy when amongst them was The House In The Cerulean Sea 😭 Absolutely one of the cosiest books I have ever read... but in fairness, I personally think it's a summer read.
Your earrings! I have the same design on a necklace. I love T. Kingfisher - horror and whimsy wrapped up in the same stories. "We can't have everything in life." LOL, so true, and I must regularly remind my Corvid brain. I'm just now, a week into September, pulling together an autumnal stack/list. They will be the first books to grace the book cart I just bought, a bit smaller variation on the popular ones I see on Booktube. I kept piling TBR stacks on the floor in front of my bedroom dresser and then not able to get into the drawers. Now I'll be able to just roll the whole thing out of the way. Voila! Clothing! To wear while reading!
Jane Eyre is peak autumnal vibes for me, so I would be super excited if I realized that I hadn’t finished it and got to read the ending for this first time this autumn 😊 how lucky that it turned out that way for you!
The effect of the translator is actually so interesting! I also read (and loved) crime and punishment this year, in Dutch, but I read my dad's old copy which was translated (by Jan Meijer) in the 1950's so the language was quite old-timey. For me this really added to the vibe (since it is a classic) and actually leant some comedic effect which I think the story (which admittedly is rather slow at times) really benefitted from, so you could always give older translations a go if the new one doesn't work out!
THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS OF ALL TIME. It’s only a 3 book series and it’s complete. It’s very fast paced, so you can get through it pretty easy.
A note on Dracula: I also did the thing of reading Dracula in October a couple of years ago, and was a little disappointed? The book is very clearly written for an audience that is new to the concept of vampires, and if you're not, a lot of the suspense falls a little flat. BUT! I suggest you sign up for the next round of Dracula Daily instead! It's a project that mails you the book as it happens (since it's an epistolary novel and every entry is clearly dated) - reading the book chronologically this way was a VASTLY improved experience for me and I'm a little sad that it wasn't my first time reading the book, it was so much better. It starts in May and ends in November, but you can also catch up in the archive and finish with the group!
A little bit more a light hearted suggestion, but I picked up The Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett for exactly that, cozy autumnal vibes, and I recommend it for a simple, amusing but mood setting read! And, well, thank you for the suggestions! Exactly what I was looking for!
“Jane Eyre” is my go-to Autumn read. I have a delightful podcast recommendation for you! You have to listen to season 5 of the Hot and Bothered podcast. It’s a thoughtful, smart, in depth, chapter-by-chapter analysis of Jane Eyre that is so satisfying!
The Swallow by Charis Cotter is a great mystery ghost story. It might be for children but it was soo well written. I love it. And such a great atmosphere is in there too.
Leonie, when will you write your own book? (Interview with the Vampire is a masterpiece, you should definetely read it. The movie was good, the book is even better.)
I am about to finish Belladonna and i have to say, i am kind of sad i hadn't read it in autumn. It has about 800 pages on my e-book reader, the descriptions of the nature and the setring in the victorian period is such a mood. I think it has everything you're looking for :)
If you like books with witches and magical forest I would recommend Uprooted by Naomi Novik !! (and also Spinning Silver by her, loved it) I'm currently reading it and so far it's great, very fitting !
As a huge fan of Leroux's novel, I do agree with your wanting to read Phantom of the Opera. However, I would caution that it's nothing like the popular musical/film of the musical. There is nothing sexy about Erik (the Phantom), but the mystery is ramped up in the novel by quite a bit. So, if you're in the mood for a genuine Gothic mystery that is actually really progressive in its moral themes and its representation of Middle Eastern culture (the real hero of the novel is the Persian, though he is written out of the stage show and a lot of his back story is given to Madam Giry instead). Just don't go into it expecting the same story that you get into the stage show/2000s film, and you'll have a great time.
If you’re into a cozy autumnal book with small town vibes and witchcraft, I recommend Cackle by Rachel Harrison. It’s about a woman who becomes friends with someone she thinks is a witch
i would also HIGHLY recommend 'the similars' and 'the pretenders'. It's a duology set at a boarding school when a bunch of clones come to school with their originals. the dark acedemia vibes are amazing and its actually super interesting!
Silver in the Wood!!! It's super vibey and also kinda autumnal? I mean it happens during summer, but the fae and the ancient forest work for fall as well imo
If you liked Jane Eyre you're probably going to like Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I picked up Jane Eyre because the plot reminded me of Rebeca. I don't know if it's good for Autumn, I read it on Summer.
leonie i absolutely adore your channel ❤i've been watching your videos for three years now and i love the atmosphere, your personality, and your book recommendations!! love you :)
I got into T Kingfisher's books this year, I read 2 novels by her and loved both. She has two new releases out since Nettle & Bone (which I read) actually, she writes a lot :D The House with Good Bones (the other I read) which is a Southern Gothic family drama with creepy flowers + unexplained birb presence (vultures). I think the other one is a Frog Princess story or something? Her writing is a little quirky and has humor in it but there are also proper horror bits.
The Starless Sea and Strange the Dreamer are my top two favorites ever so I'm very excited for you to read them sometime. I will say that The Starless Sea is definitely winter vibes and Strange the Dreamer is more spring/summer to me. Hope this helps! 🍂

Leonie first going for a book shopping spree and after that checking if she already has any books to read at home is such a mood

The Raven Cycle is one of my favorite series!!!! The characters are written so well, the vibes, the magical realism. Everything.
This is my favorite! Everything about the series was just so good ✨️
reading in autumn is just a whole different vibe
The last 100 pages of Jane Eyre is actually the best part I can’t wait for you to read it
As an Erin Morgenstern, Neil Gaiman and T. Kingfisher unofficial spokesperson I can't WAIT for you to read these books, you're going to have so much fun. The autumn vibes are unmatched.
LOL, I have never phrased it this way but, I too am an unofficial spokesperson for these three authors.

Ahhhh The Starless Sea is a PERFECT AUTUMN READ!!! It’s so so atmospheric I adore it
The Swallow by Charis Cotter is a great mystery ghost story. It might be for children but it was soo well written. I love it. And such a great atmosphere is in there too.
the starless sea is definitely a good fall book, the scenery is so good!
dowry of blood is the thinnest book i own, definetly something you can fly through on a cozy day
Leonie, when will you write your own book? (Interview with the Vampire is a masterpiece, you should definetely read it. The movie was good, the book is even better.)
I LOVED The Cloisters, I read it early this year and it is the perfect cosy evening book
I loved it too! Sad to see it has so many low ratings on Goodreads :(
I am about to finish Belladonna and i have to say, i am kind of sad i hadn't read it in autumn.
Just don't go into it expecting the same story that you get into the stage show/2000s film, and you'll have a great time.
idk if you've done this before, but i would love a notion tour! the way you organize your book page looks super interesting!
The story of your life is such a good short story collection! I am so glad you get to experience it :]
So glad you mentioned Slewfoot! I’m reading it right now and I’m enjoying it so much!
I JUST FINISHED NETTLE AND BONE ASDFGHJK WHAT ARE THE ODDS! SAME EDITION TOO! (I think you will enjoy it)
If you liked Jane Eyre you're probably going to like Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I picked up Jane Eyre because the plot reminded me of Rebeca. I don't know if it's good for Autumn, I read it on Summer.
Ooh yay! I was just rewatching your dark cottagecore video so this video came at a good time.
leonie i absolutely adore your channel ❤i've been watching your videos for three years now and i love the atmosphere, your personality, and your book recommendations!! love you :)
If you take any suggestions I would love to see you review some classic literature. Best wishes.
This marks around one year since I subscribed to your channel! I fell in love with your impeccable fall vibes and fall book recs last year ❤
The Cloisters, lots of memories for me, went there so many Sunday afternoons from the Village.
Autumn is really the best time for reading☕
speaking about dostoevskiy, honestly, it's hard reading him even in russian, so i 100% get your feelings about crime and punishment
