First Bird Shot Over Máquina! Pointer Training w/ Pigeons: "Make the Machine" | Ep: #46

Training pointing dog with pigeons is what we are doing today! If you watched the previous couple episode in our pointing dog training series, you will have seen how poorly this went the first and second times we tried it. Now, we are back for vengeance as we try it again. After our last attempt going significantly better than the first, we are now going to shoot a pigeon over her! We will not however shoot the bird if she doesn't point and hold it well. We are setting it up different this time, and putting out multiple birds to have multiple opportunities. All we are looking for is one good solid point!
This series will be different from any other we’ve done for a variety of reasons. What won’t be different is that it will be real, raw and unedited. We share the good, bad and ugly knowing they they all are important in order to make progress with a pointing dog puppy.

Our GWP pup has her pointing training starting on Friday afternoon. We should find a good number of birds in the wood, as it is on a purpose-built shooting estate. Apart from pointing and gunshot, we will also being working on steadiness to flush as we certainly don't need to worry about prey drive when hunting!

I gotta know why not reenforce the “whoa” when she is on point. I see this with other trainers. Do you ever plan on using the whoa in the field? And with your labs as soon as you take the lead off of them you still expect to see a calm dog. Are you encouraging her drive to run out right away to look for birds? Part of me thinks this is why she is running over birds at times and not hunting as much. It was cool to see the difference in this video because it felt like you had more control up to the point of the hunt. With all respect I appreciate your videos and am leaning a lot -Jack
