I don’t think the issue is the CVT in general because other brands do CVT’s quite well. It’s that Nissan still uses the jatco sourced CVT’s which had so many reliability issues in the past. Maybe someone else can enlighten me if I’m wrong, but I’m not aware of any major progress Nissan made in the reliability of their jatco sourced CVT.
@@mcalebeb Subaru has the same cvt? Wow...didn't know. I have no issues yet. 70k km on my outback but yeah not doing crazy offroad or accelerating like a dumbass everywhere.
Yes, in the PAST but this did not say JATCO transmissions are always crap. The 7 speed from JATCO is super reliable. Newer ones are far better, same here in Europe for the Qashqai/Rogue Sport with CVT. Cars from 2014/15 have some problems with the CVT, newer ones did not. Same with the DSG from VW and Ford.
I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 200,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.
Great review! I also watched Alex's, too, and you both were not just informative, but entertaining with your impressions and extended road tests. And yes, Nissan has had some issues with CVTs, other have also had issues with them as well, and for some reason it hasn't hurt the other brands images. That said, Ford has had multiple issues with their DSG which has also led to a lawsuit, so there's no perfect choice if there is no manual options to be had with a majority of offerings in this class. That said, the previous generation was a pretty attractive vehicle, and this is certainly much more appealing. Aside from those mentioned issues with CVTs, Nissan has otherwise very good quality which I'd say from experience at import dealerships is on par with its competitors.
Nissan focused totally on more premium and higher quality Sentra with this design. Gone are the days of a rental car Nissan Sentra that sits to high andis to small on the inside. With this design that sits on a new platform focusses on a lower yet wider stance . It focuses on a Contemporary youthful buyer ,and has a trim level for buyers of all walks of life. This is a generation of Nissan Sentra to remember. Good job to Nissan 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.

I find the Sentra in it's comical "sport" mode feels better if you're lighter on the pedal, i notice more lag when trying to slam the pedal down. but I've been driving mine for around half a year a bit more now and I am loving it
I have a 2020 Sentra SV and I believe you are right using the "S" or Sport mode makes sense if you don't floor the pedals with just ease and slowly putting pressure on it makes the car run faster... I only use the sport mode when I try to go pass a car or sometimes in hurry

Wow, that is a really nice redesign. Yes, it's a baby Altima but it's sweet looking. They are going to sell alot of these. This model may actually hurt Hyundai. I loved my 1994 Sentra and currently looking for another one but I REALLY like this.
I’m amazed that this thing has made it 1,000 miles with no issues. I’ll give this to Nissan - it’s a great looking car, but only time will tell of the CVT reliability. We can only hope that they have listened to their customers and improved the Jatco CVT.

This new Sentra looks SO good. Proud of Nissan for stepping up their design. Not even mad that it has full incandescent tail lights considering this is a compact car. I think the parking sensors, 360 degree camera, and heated steering wheel make up for it though! Now full incandescent tail lights on the Altima in 2020 is a whole other story...
No manual is a major disappointment. If that CVT goes, you're looking at a big repair bill. Corolla does offer a stick. It's just that it's tricky to find the offering on the Toyota website, the Corolla SE. To get a stick on the Mazda 3, you have to buy the premium version.
I think they should make a nismo platinum with a red leather interior and black diamond stiching. They should change it to rwd with dual scroll turbo chargers and 2.5l v4 engine. Give it two exhaust in the middle and a glass roof with a wing in the back.
Yeah it lacks power and it like 400 pounds heavier than the SE-R was. Nissan made 200 horsepower out of an na 1.6 liter engine in the 90's, they're not quite there yet but well on their way to being number 1 again.
Wow! Nissan did a thing with this Sentra. I only hope it proves to be a good investment when it comes to reliability. I have a 2011 Sentra and although my transmission has been problem free, it does scare me to possibly upgrade to this model and then have problems with the transmission. Based on looks alone, this model easily triumphs the Corolla and Civic, the only other vehicles I would consider in this class.
This looks good. I love where they’ve taken the Sentra. Leatherette and CVT make me nervous about long term holdup, but nonetheless this will be a hit.
I think you guys are missing the point regarding why we dislike the CVT so much. Yes, the CVT that NISSAN uses is garbage no argument there right? I will however state a fact that most of us that like to row our own gears are thinking. Most if not all car manufacturers build standard transmissions for the same cars they sell here but for other markets but they tell us that they "only" sell CVT's here in the US because that is what will make them money. Well, I do understand the business side of it but they are lying when they say that they can "only" offer the CVT. I have traveled all over the world and have seen two things that at first did shock me but then I remembered how things work in the good ol USA. First thing I saw especially in Europe is that almost all cars have the option of a Diesel engine, second thing those same cars have the option of a standard transmission. So how about a pipe dream Nissan? Offer the standard transmission that you already build as an option and charge 1,000-1,500 for it like the auto option was back in the day and see what happens. Not that you would sell a million of them but give the customers the option and I am certain enough people would select that box when ordering/buying their car. I know I would pay extra if given the choice. Just saying...
Very nice car, definitely an upgrade over the last version. Unfortunately I think Nissan messed up again leaving out the cooled seats, memory seats and LED tail lights.
People beat the hell out of them and don't change the CVT fluid. Its their own fault. I see Nissan everywhere, if they were so bad they wouldn't be all over the road.

Was waiting for your infamous Nissan, key fob complaint, and THERE it is @ 3:49! LOL! Dude, the key fob is small, ergonomic, fits in the hand very well, and is unobtrusive when you put it away. Still looks good, still works, why change it? It was ahead of its time and other key fobs merely caught up with it. No reason to change it. Great review, otherwise, S.!
@Daniel Hernandez I have seen many other manufacturer's key fobs and they're not that different. I don't see how they're better. Just changing something for the sake of changing something doesn't necessarily make it better. And, I don't believe many are complaining to Nissan about their key fobs. I've only heard it's an issue when visiting these reviews.
@Daniel Hernandez Additionally, the fob opens the car, closes the car, opens/closes the trunk and even turns on the car and still remains as small in size as it is. Don't see a problem.
Just leased the SR model. I've heard that the CVT sucks but I like the way it looks and the interior is way better than the Corolla. They did good on the remodel in my opinion. Plus I've had 2 Mazdas in the past which is stiff competition.
Also, I haven’t been into cars for a while. The wife and I switched to Ram trucks back in 2010 but after so many years now that we’re looking for a small car for our teenager, I just realized that these things don’t have a bumper anymore. Not the actual bumper, I can’t see that from the outside and can’t tell if they have them in there, but the outside bumper cover. Instead the grill extends almost all the way down and the hood, grill, bumper, lights, etc all fall almost in the same line, which means, even in the case of small accidents, you’d have to replace/repair the whole front end whereas back in the days it was just the bumper cover that would take in most of the impact and in case of small hits it would pop back out leaving just some scratched paint. At the price point of these cars, plus only CVTs as the automatic option, and the stupidly designed front end, it’s just not worth buying a car anymore, I just checked, and almost all new cars have the same thing going on, not just Nissan. No wonder, so many people are switching to trucks. Only if they made a smaller truck that I could buy for my teenager, that would’ve been nice, Rumor is that Ford is coming out with a compact truck soon and hopefully other manufacturers decide to do the same. In the meanwhile I think I’ll just get an older mid-2000’s car to teach my kid driving and for her to drive till the compact trucks start coming out or till she is comfortable enough to start driving mid or full sized trucks.

Calisto Riviera Mitsubishi & Subaru use those transmissions too. I looked up a list and it’s weird we don’t see the same complaints in their models...
Calisto Riviera yh like the chevy sparks cvt is better barely noticeable that its cvt
@@mcalebeb although Subaru uses a Jatco CVT, the Subarus are slightly different due to the longitudinal layout.
Impressive. Dual exhaust would have went a long way, but you're getting a total overhaul so, can't complain. Looks great!
I'm really digging the new front end /headlights design. The Altima should have this front end.
Compact cars have really improved
Yep but not that Sentra haha
But they are still compact cars.
I think this is going to be my next commuter car that I buy, I love the looks and everything that it offers.
The absolute hardest part for me is which two-tone color I want cause they all look good, Monarch Orange, Electric Blue, or Aspen White!
I'll buy Nissan again when they bring back the SE-R trim level.
in that ugly body style, I hope not
Hope they come out again with a Nismo for this cycle.
If there was an SE-R for the Sentra I would be forced to choose either it or a Maxima cause this little thing would RIP
Nissan should make an SE-R Altima with the VQ35HR and a small turbo paired with a 6-speed transmission, and Rear wheel drive!
@@P_double_H transplant the Q60 engine.
what a great review, very thorough but also kept the review moving. Very entertaining!
Sofyan still appreciates felt lined glove boxes & doors that close with a proper well crafted thump.....
Yea I don’t care if my glove box is lined with felt. My door pockets are lined with carpet in my Volkswagen Tiguan. And I’ll line my glove box with that grippy rubberish liner that you can use in cabinets or on shelves
Good stuff as always, my friend! I have a 2017 Nissan Sentra Nismo and I love it. It is a great every day car and am very happy with it almost 2 years later (got it new in February of 2018).
If I knew how to add a picture to a comment then I would share what she looks like but I cant figure it out 😂
Keep up the good work!
Good to see Alex on ur channel. Really like ur reviews especially when u compare other models when explaining the features of one car👍
Earlier I thought that I am seeing Alex only around the car taking vdos ...
I am happy to see you and Alex together test driving the same car. You both should consider giving reviews together ...! 👍
Love seeing 2 of my favorite reviewers in the Sam spot. If I was to buy a new Sentra it would have to me a NISMO. Come on Nissan.

Dustin Parker I don't think they had to listen to customers as much as the technicians repairing these things. I had an interview lined up for Nissan and the first thing he said is how good are you at transmissions. We got plenty of CVTs to swap. I said yeah I'd rather work on cars worth a shit and now I work on MINIs!
Lol ford’s and like every other brand besides Toyota and Honda is more unreliable then this. So don’t complain

Put the Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission in it from the 2012-2017 Camry for reliability and smooth driving. CVT equals no deal.
The ZF 9 speed auto would do wonders for the Sentra and Altima.
@Stereo Typist Honda has better cvt's. My best was 42 mpg. Do you understand how a cvt works?

Peanut butter & smelly...
Take a drink for every mention of Jatco transmission?
I know Scotty Kilmer personally and we talked for HOURS about Nissan's horrendous Quality. They make the worst in the world.
I’m sure they are improved, only the 2013-2015 Nissans with CVTs had issues, newer ones not so much.
I am actually interested in buying a Sentra now, it will probably cost around 29k where I live but considering the Civic in my country costs you around 33k the new Sentra is not bad
“Sport mode” on a Sentra is like “Hell week” at a yoga retreat
😂👍🏿
This new Sentra looks SO good. Proud of Nissan for stepping up their design. Not even mad that it has full incandescent tail lights considering this is a compact car. I think the parking sensors, 360 degree camera, and heated steering wheel make up for it though! Now full incandescent tail lights on the Altima in 2020 is a whole other story...
I had the gen 3 sentra, a great economical car, this is light years ahead of the gen 3
Notice how Alex has his hand on the Oh Shit handle the whole time Sofyan is driving. You can tell he's a smart man.
Damn compact cars get bigger & bigger each year. Love the new re-design tho 👌🏾

No manual is a major disappointment. If that CVT goes, you're looking at a big repair bill. Corolla does offer a stick. It's just that it's tricky to find the offering on the Toyota website, the Corolla SE. To get a stick on the Mazda 3, you have to buy the premium version.
Move to Canada. They will have the manual.
VIDEOHEREBOB buy a Mazda, you will at least get an automatic transmission.
I think they should make a nismo platinum with a red leather interior and black diamond stiching. They should change it to rwd with dual scroll turbo chargers and 2.5l v4 engine. Give it two exhaust in the middle and a glass roof with a wing in the back.
Multilink susp is a welcome change but are they seriously calling it "the sportiest sentra ever"? like cmon any SE-R would smoke this
Yeah it lacks power and it like 400 pounds heavier than the SE-R was.
5:28 wild Alex on Autos appears
james Gand I was gonna say that but I wasn’t sure
Lol
Alex deserves a mic too!lol.. And I am sooo glad I went from a Toyota Corolla with a CVT to a 2016 Mini, much more fun to drive!
This looks good. I love where they’ve taken the Sentra. Leatherette and CVT make me nervous about long term holdup, but nonetheless this will be a hit.
Leatherette is great. In BMWs sometimes even the salesmen couldn't tell the difference between that and real leather.
What a pleasant surprise to see Alex!!!
I drive a 2012 Nissan Sentra and I love this review!
i like incandescent bulb tail lights....if it gets busted all you have to replace is the bulb
Anyone else notice the tiny brakes? I've seen more brake on a prius.
Alex is holding on the grip in the car like a parent riding with their child 😂

MGazT why u say that ?
@MGazT All I want is a car that can easily get me from point A to B.

This should’ve been the Altima. The new Altima’s don’t look all that great to me and this new Sentra design screams Altima imo
Why do many people seem to have problems with Nissan’s CVT? I have Nissan Slyphy (Sentra in the States) for 6 years, and it still works really well.
People beat the hell out of them and don't change the CVT fluid. Its their own fault. I see Nissan everywhere, if they were so bad they wouldn't be all over the road.
140K miles and CVT transmission failed even on my friends 2017 model. It has been 8 years and they still haven't fixed their CVT issues.
Umm....they put 140k miles on it in less than two years?!
Boba Fett did your friend change their transmission fluid ?
140k in 2 years is amazing. Even hd trucks tranny dont last that long
How can you drive 140k mile within 2 years? even taxi could not make it this far, your friend drive 24 hours per day 7 days per week?
@@hendryt588 I was a medical courier and was driving 100k a year a in my car. That is 500 miles a day. I did routine maintenance every 5 weeks. That was roughly 10k miles when it went into the shop for it. Car ran perfectly up until I totaled it by hitting a elk. It was not a Sentra, but a Cruze. Take care of the Car and it will take care of you.
Exterior nicely upgraded. Interior is good, but room for improvement. Cheers !
I like it, good job Nissan. Thanks, good review.
The car looks nice however time will tell if these cvts hold up nisssan has a history on not so savory reliability when it comes to transmissions.
Just leased the SR model. I've heard that the CVT sucks but I like the way it looks and the interior is way better than the Corolla. They did good on the remodel in my opinion. Plus I've had 2 Mazdas in the past which is stiff competition.
"hinges that crush your cargo" 🤣
Underrated
Love the little trims and details especially the exterior, that orange colour is so bright and amazing and the front grill
Very nice combination with Alex on Autos !!!
