  • Thank you to our patron Lars for this amazing pick! What a prog journey this track was. Instrumental prog metal at its finest... and it's from the 90s! WIld. Harkens back to Yes and KC and leans to the future as well.

Do not, I repeat, do not ever call Anglagard progmetal. There is not hint of metal in their sound, no Dream Theater. This is pure symphonic rock in the mold of Yes and King Crimson with an added darker Norwegian folk twist. The whole Scandinavian progscene is a rabbit hole worth delving into. Bands like Anekdoten, Landberk, White Willow, Wobbler, Jordsjø, Lumsk, Oak, Meer, Pymlico, The Tales Of Father Robin, Soup / Giant Sky, Moon Safari, Pixie Ninja, Karmakanic, Flower Kings.

I remember when this album came out in the early 90's. It was definitely a welcome change from the corporate prog Yes and ELP were making, or the weak-tea you'd find from younger, home grown prog bands in the states. It's like the Swedes had a direct line to the kind of ballsy, crunchy prog of King Crimson circa 1974 that everyone else had forgotten about. The timing was perfect with the grunge scene exploding, so bands like Anglagard, Anekdoten, and Ritual had explosive starts. Prog festivals were popping up all over and these bands were getting booked to play everywhere. That's where I saw Anglagard first, at ProgFest in LA in '93. Sadly, they also became something some hardcore prog fans would beat others over the head with. As in, "You're not a REAL prog fan unless you love Anglagard." I like it when I'm in the mood, but as I get older I'm less often in the mood for something this dense and complex. Plus, as good as they were, in a live setting it was very clinical. I could appreciate the complexity and technical skill, but it all left me a bit cold. Their singer/guitarist Tord was the only one who would make any eye contact with the audience. Still, their drummer Matthias was only 19 or something at the time but he just killed. On the other hand, Anna Holmgren, their flautist, was incredibly shy. She looked totally out of place in her dress up there playing in this rock band. Apparently their band rehearsals were no picnic and Anglagard imploded while making their second album. But they *were* a big part of the Nordic prog revival of the early 90s, along with White Willow, Flower Kings, Landberk, Sinkadus and others. If you like this, Lee, that's a very deep rabbit hole to get lost in.

This was amazing! It brought to mind many of my favourite bands from the '70's Including Giant Hogweed era Genesis. Loved it!

Holy crap, can't believe you're actually listening to Anglagard! A fellow proghead lent me this album last year, and I was just as impressed as you were. True symphonic prog in the purest sense of the term. The early 90s were a bit of a sallow time for prog before Spock's Beard and the Flower Kings and Porcupine Tree arrived in the middle of the decade to kick off the Second Golden Age of Prog, so this must have felt like an oasis for prog fans when it came out. Good pick!

This album was right at the forefront of the prog revival in the 90s. All 3 of their studio albums are top shelf Swedish prog. When they played NEARFest in 2003(?) they had 3 mellotrons on stage, and were amazing. Matthias Olsen is the drummer, he was straight up sick live.

This is almost like a lost prog classic for serious aficionados. An acquaintance gave me a copy of this on cassette back in the late 90's. I loved it immediately; it was everything I wanted progressive rock to be, a melodic apotheosis by turns powerful and delicate, triumphant and wistful. I wouldn't change a single note, everything is perfection. So of course I was despondent when I heard the band had broken up in 1994. I can hear Steve Hackett (and old Genesis) in there, King Crimson, and even some Primus and early Phish. The only band around nowadays that sounds akin to them would be Wobbler, IMO. So glad you got exposed to this!

Not a Xylophone but a Glockenspiel. Xylophone is wood and Glockenspiel is steel. Jimi Hendrix used one in Little Wing on Axis: Bold As Love (1967)

First time listening to Anglagard (name taken from JRR Tolkien's character) together with Sinkadus, Miriodor, Saxun, Kenso (Japan) and Space Out in 2002.
And if you like prog metal instrumental, check out Dark Matter Secret, you'll love it.
