The wind shield wiper clanking noise would have driven me INSANE!

It sounds worse (louder) on the recording than in real life.

Could someone go back to 1995 and reset the wipers to “medium” at least hehe , but I enjoyed the snow covered scenery for sure. Surprised that engine noise inside the cab was so low and controls and gauges so modern with a clean looking design. Very nice.

I spent years boating up and down that pool of the Mississippi, especially in that era. I’ve been under that bridge hundreds of times. It’s nice to finally see it from a perspective that I’ll never get to experience. Thanks for posting that.

This brings back memories of Pentrex’s footage they shot of the Soo Line on this bridge back in 1993!! While the awesome sights of the Soo-liners are gone, this is still a bridge I’d love to go see a train on in person someday during the winter!!

Used to live in Carroll County IL (Savanna side) it's a sight to see trains take it in winter or in summer.

I worked that same territory during the IMRL days. I actually worked with Tom when I worked out of Davenport and went north.
My final year was working coal trains out of Ottumwa. I actually have some videos on my channel of a few trips that I ran down there.

Thanks for your comments! I've watched your terrific videos a few months ago regarding your trips out of Ottumwa. I'm glad you took the time to record them during that period and eventually upload to RUclips as now it's verboten to do so.

Dan, I worked with a guy on the GTW in Michigan that worked for the Soo! This was back in 1994-5. Can't remember his name.He told me he worked out of Chicago. In 96 i moved on to Conrail.

Roger, I can only think of one person I knew at Bensenville who worked for the Soo and then went to the Grand Trunk Western (GTW) about the time frame you mentioned. I seem to recall his first name was Tim.

I could notice the space just outside Sabula where the second track used to be west of the bridge

Pretty cool, I remember you making trips with me on the D&I. I have almost no photos or video of me at work, either on the RR or in the USMC, so it is pretty cool to see. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you so much Dan, the shots of the bridge and the river are amazing. Grew up near Rice Lake and remember the Soo Line running through. Ever get to Blueberry Crossing south of Rice Lake?

The only road territory I operated freight trains on as a locomotive engineer was between Bensenville, IL to Davenport, IA (Nahant yard).

Was that on the bridge a gantlet track where two tracks merged into single? The CNW had something similar on its bridge over the river in Cedar Rapids in Iowa.

    • @WAL_DC-6B
      @WAL_DC-6B  6 лет назад +2

The railroad bridge at Sabula - Savanna is single track, no gauntlet. I was employed over ten years for the C&NW back in the 1980's. I rode over that gauntlet bridge at Cedar Rapids quite a number of times either as an ultra-sound rail test car operator, riding on NorthWestern freight trains and on two rare occasions, running the NorthWestern's Budd RDC-3 #430 track geometry car. As a gauntlet bridge, the two sets of tracks (four rails) don't merge into one set (two rails) like at Sabula. Instead, they cross onto a single track bridge with four rails occupying pretty much the same area as a single track bridge. This is done using switch frogs at either end of the bridge. I wonder if the Union Pacific has or will replace that gauntlet bridge at Cedar Rapids with a double track bridge making for faster and safer passage of trains. Thanks for your interest!

Dan Uscian Okeedokee thanks for the info 😀

    • @mileswrich

This was never a double track bridge. In the late 70s, the Milwaukee abandoned its E-W main line from Green Island thru Marion (Cedar Rapids), Tama, Manilla, to Council Bluffs. The western end still exists as a BNSF local service line. The E-W main from 1955 until Amtrak day in 1971 carried the UP City Streamliners. Today, the bridge only carries traffic from Chicago toward Davenport and Kansas City, and north along the Iowa side of the MIssissippi River toward Dubuque and Marquette, where another former Milwaukee E-W main heads toward Mason City.

Yes. In fact, if the CP-KCS merger is approved freight traffic will really increase on this line.
