- In all honesty working these 5 frame nucs all summer has taught me SOOO much about swarm behavior and how to tell before the bees swarm that they are going to swarm. Once the bees start their swarm impulse there is no way to stop it. So as a beekeeper we try our best to stay ahead of it. Easier said than done as we are not bees! HAHA! But I am beginning to notice a pattern in each hive has they progress towards swarming and here is what I see :)

Hi Emily, I'm in SE PA. We have had warm weather since the start of June. May was very dry. Recently, we have had weeks with a threat of thunderstorms every day. We have had sufficient rain so flowers should be blooming and providing nectar. I'm seeing a good amount of nectar and pollen coming into my hives.

You can put a brick or anything heavy on the trap and they can't flip it. I use cat food, they love it no container needed. I just put the bait behind the lever on the ground in the trap.

I find a natural queen cell makes best queens.
In Kansas we have been hot and in a drought. I'm in NE KS so not as bad as the rest of the state but still very dry. Recently we got some relief. Just hope the soy bloom gives me something
Everyone has had problems with dearth. I was lucky in S.C. to pull 340lb in late may from last year. Put boxs back on and lost almost 1/3 my hives to robbing. . Only had 36 hives. So glad to have gotten honey i did. And need to take the wets that im sure are cleaned by now and try to save wax for next year. Bad honey year all round here

Love your videos! Question for you. I check my hives weekly. I’m 2nd yr, have 12 hives (Eastern Wa). I’ve done several splits this yr. In one of my hives I saw the queen 3wks ago, and there was a ton of capped brood so added another box (I run 10 frame double deeps). Last week, I noticed a few empty queen cups (took them down) and added a super, didn’t find the queen but plenty of evidence she was there. Yesterday, the number of capped queen cells was obscene. I couldn’t find the queen, no eggs, no larva. 😐. Now what? I really don’t want any more hives, 12 is proving to be a quite lot. There are still a lot of bees in there. I’m assuming just ride it out and wait for the queens to emerge and fight it out? Talk about spot on with your timing talk today! Thanks for your thoughts!
I always wonder what you can do if you do not want to many bee hives? I know if your in a farm area it is easier to have more hives but also being alone and taking care of many hives alone can be a lot. I wish I had an answer but I guess you could sell nucs to people Instead of having more hives. I cant do that where I live without a permit but thats what I may do once I get a permit but that does sound kind of annoying to get. Its not to liberal here in Ontario for beekeeping. I would take down all but one queen cell so you dont have more then one swarm leave the hive. If there are many queen cells your hive can send out multiple swarms. The fact you saw no evidence of a queen is telling me they probably swarmed already. If you can catch it then awesome. if not leave 1 to 2 queen cells so they do not send out any extra cast swarms. Hope this somewhat can help you. Usually the 1st born queen will kill all the others but not always. Like I said they can send out multiple swarms rather then fight to the death. Man bees are interesting arent they?
After rob outs i have alot of brood pollen bound frame that i put in freezers. 2 freezers but need to make room. Found you can wash pollen from frames and threat with certan or ice crystals just need them dry to prevent mold
Why are you overwintering in nucs and not double deep boxes? I would think the nucs would get cold during winter up there. I have a couple nucs that probably won't build up much by winter. If I don't use the queens for my 20 hives I will try double deep nucs for winter.
I live in Central Iowa. I insulate my hives in November till March.

Hope to have enough left to buy cells from northern beekeeper next year and put in my extra 6 frame nucs and go from there. They bring their bees south every winter and have extra

try to keep track of the queens this winter that come from natural queen cells this old man in Mi told me he went 20 for 20 overwintered he swears by actual real queen cells.

I’ve had swarms all the way thru September! We aren’t promised a fall flow so it always makes me wonder why the bees will still swarm then but if they’re crowded they’ll definitely try
Maybe, they just want to change their queen.
I would be embarrassed if my bee yard looked like that, bee boxes laying all over, frames all over the ground, trash. Also do some weed whacking and spray some round up around them hives. Make it look nice🤦♂️
I find that roundup around my hive has not hurt my bees . Have used last 4 years
