Overrated crap from a director whose showing hong Kong or china that doesn't exist. Cheap imitation of western culture (Although there's nothing wrong with the culture at all) just to look cool is pathetic.
i think that’s part of showcasing western culture through any international film though. like, everyone likes to “imitate” western culture. globalization has circulated many western cultural aspects throughout the globe. you can see people speaking different languages throughout the movie, but the common lingua franca is english. this is present in many non-american films. i’m sorry if i misunderstood your comment. anyway, we are all entitled to our own opinions; one can think this movie is overrated if they feel it.
Nick Edits Not China but HK, a while ago. Also WKW was not talking about China, but about his very romantic vision of people in Chungking Mansions. Your comment is like saying Truffaut's Day for Night is about american culture. It's ok to have little culture : just don't spread it too thin :)
a 10 year old little boy skipped his afternoon class and watched this movie; then he fell in love with Dinah Washington and songs of 60's; then he kept wondering what California looked like; then he decided to go to California; and now he lives in San Francisco Bay.............this boy is me...........
It’s actually a foreboding metaphor that his girlfriend is really just used to him but not in love with him, because later on his girlfriend leaves him.
This transition from the first story to the second is excellent.............the way the editor gave the second protagonist an entry....makes audiences feel that they were waiting for this character to arrive the whole time......i remember while watching the film.i was like....now the movie has begun..and it was worth it..especially with tht kind of music...wow....
CE is very sensually Hong Kong and very iconic Wong Kar-wai. The way Tony Leung was 'introduced' into the film as CD started to play was a delightful transition and brilliant cinema.
"Sensually Hong Kong." That's it exactly. I have been away from Hong Kong for several years now, but whenever I watch this film or hear this music, I experience a rush of memories and feel like I am there again for a moment.
This movie is easily in my top 5 best movies ever, but definately my number one when it comes to nostalgia. Seen it atleast 20 times. Fell madly in love with brigitte when i first watched it when i was like 10 years old.
Dude, like... I just dont have words, for how beautiful this is. Like, every movement, every look, the way she looks for a second after coming back to the balcony.
A sublime movie ... grew up on HK cinema and cantopop, but nothing compares to how life changing discovering your first WKW films is. Thank you WKW for your surreal, dreamy works.
Just watched this movie a few days ago, and still I haven’t been able to get this scene out of my head. Felt like I’d found a long-lost part of myself watching this movie.
Every six months or so, I revisit this movie (and usually follow up with Fallen Angels). I've heard that the actual restaurant the "Midnight Express" that this scene was shot in is now a 7-11.... is nothing sacred!
In korea, there are many lovers of this movie. It's very sensitive and like reading a novel and like a smell of dawn. I think this movie is well made thing about non-histrical but visiontic of that generation or period.
I love the freeze-frame with voiceover narration at the start of the clip. Kinda like the freeze-frames in Scorsese’s Goodfellas but still works very well in a completely different movie Also, the shot at 1:13 gives me chills
Faye really did a brilliant job in Chungking Express, but she is usually renowned as a singer-songwriter rather than an actress. Her song 'Eyes on Me' was much well-known.
also..to add...........i think this film is special becuase it has the timeless appeal.........i had no idea tht this film was from 1994 when I watched it (in 2009).............i felt so bad the moment i found out tht this film is old....its like i felt i missed out on a generation of movies and celebrities.......every1 in this film..is really old now...thts kinda sad.....i gotto noe them too late...........the girl who played faye was awesome

@@josephine1465 Maybe it is. I did say it was my favourite, after all ! Happy Together I think I've only seen once and at the time I thought it was pretty good too. Then there's In The Mood for Love, not only because of Maggie Cheung (and Tony Leung) and the hypnotic tune... So, you see, I'm not in disagreement with you, I'm just hedging my bets!
I always love this scene where the first cop bumps into the girl but it’s not him that falls in love with her, He introduces another cop that he will fall in love with her.
It's my dream to have Wong Kar Wai, Takashi Kaneshiro, Tony Leung, Jacky Cheung, Christopher Doyle and if only, Leslie Cheung to make a film together again...
this film was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.
Me too, I feel like that too.

Rarely does a movie take ownership of a song as thoroughly as this.
Love this movie...reminds me of this quote from Haruki Murakami - "Chance encounters are what keeps us going."
what a quote!
Love me some Murakami.
Funny enough, Kar-wai cited Murakami as a major inspiration for when he was writing the script!
Which book is that from?
It is from a short story chance traveller from blind Willow sleeping woman

What a romantic story....
“So she really likes chef salad?” “Maybe she’s just used to it” Manages to summarize human relationship in two sentences.

Yes. There's somethint beautiful about abandoning one story completely in the middle of the movie and wondering what will happen in the next one.

the shot from 0:09 - 0:29 is cinematic perfection. perfection.

1:17 this exclamation is awesome. I fall in love with her character every time i watch this film at this moment.
This song just seeps into your mind and doesn't leave after finishing the film
I watched this movie 2 days ago and still this song is in my mind all day :d (Well, I am not displeased.)
The clip starts with the shifting of two tectonic plates. One of the great transitions in movie history.
This girl makes me love this fucking song
Best street/romantic scene ever
I love hong kong. beautiful city.beautiful peoples.

People who love the REAL, OLD Hong Kong are all crying
because HK under the rule of the CCP is the end of freshness and inventivity. Now they obey the Han rule or they go to jail.

Gloria For me as well. Gosh that magical scene when Faye was rearranging his apartment is just too good.
