Hi guys. I'm sorry I cant remember the exact year cos I'm 62 now but a very good mate of mine, Simon Bishop from Ware in Herts was a big fan but I just didnt get it. I was listening to Hendrix and Deep Purple most of the time. He played me Action, and I thought wow that's got something about it. Long story short. He persuaded me to go and see them at the Locarno Southend and boy was I glad I went!!! Tight as fuck, brilliant vocals and loud as hell!!! What a night. People are slowly realising what a great band they were!!! I saw loads of supposedly great bands in the early, mid 70's on the London Pub and college circuit and very few came up to the standard of The Sweet.
I was 8 years old in 1973. God you're lucky to have seen them. They are the uncredited band that started everything and they were never matched. Gods. Period.
I am 62 too 😉 ... i was a huge fan and brought my records to school for the music lesson ... all boys laughed at me ... so it is going straight to my ❤ reading your words 😘

tinian33 Yes, it does. The Sweet were always a little punky. You can hear their influence in a lot of different bands. The Damned have a Sweet influence and on the opposite end of the spectrum, so does a band like Muse.
So difficult to find real live performances like this. It's a shame, because they were powerful when they were not forced to lip sync to the studio tracks.

Thats a good point. KISS was a cluster of British ideas. I can go through RUclips and find where they got it all. The Mott the Hoople video in LA shows Luther Grosvenor (Ariel Bender) sporting the shoulder pads Ace wore. Sweet & Slade wore the same platforms and pants. Roy Wood and early Sweet sported the war paint. Wood has a video that has almost the same paint design Ace Frehley used but Ace moves the star. The drum intro on Gud by T'Jane is the same intro to R & R all night if you listen closely. KISS was just a cover band in the UK.
Law Dog I think for a U.S act to break in the U.K, and vice versa of course, in marketing terms there has to be a unique selling point, and kiss just didn't have one for the U.K market in the mid to late 70"s. In other world markets the situation was very different of course.......
David Hall Absolutely! KISS was the palatable version of Glam in the USA in the 70's. Bands like Slade, Sweet,Mott, and T Rex toured up and down America but barely dented the scene. The consumer tastes in the UK and America at that time were night and day. Great point!
It's a tough call for me. So many glam bands I love, but Sweet definitely makes top 3, along with Slade and T Rex. However there are many days when Sweet is all I want to hear.

What hardly anyone knows: Ozzy Osbourne then declared, that Hell Raiser was the best rock song of the year '73. These four boys were the idols of my 70s. Not just a top rock-band, they were also the block bustering pop-rock-kings. Greetings to Steve and Andy!
I can believe Ozzy said that. I've read interviews with Ozzy where he's spoken very fondly of the glam bands from that era. Had some great things to say about Bowie and Bolan. I would have loved to see how Andy did that extended guitar thing on " Done me wrong alright".
Yes, '73 Sweet is definitely their prime year. They continued to make great records after this, but they were just on fucking FIRE here. I much preferred their glam period to the later "moustache and perm" era... though the black leather jacket period ('75-'76) was pretty cool too.
Would like to see the full show, I mean the live audio is amazing, but definitely watching the whole performance live would be beautiful!!! Thankfully I have both for my favourite Sweet's song!!! Hell Raiser is spectacular, better than the studio sound!!! 😍🙌👏🎸🎸🎶💖💅💃
Damn that live performance was ace 🤘. While they were before my time, I will forever cherish this band and are my favourite of the Glam Rock era of the 70s. You can also somewhat see how both punk and metal bands were inspired by this band.
The first time I saw Mick Tucker play was on Don Kirshner in 74. I was 13 and blown away. Kirshner had the Sweet and Black Oak Arkansas on that night and Tommy Aldridge gave Mick a good run for his money. That was a great show.
Big difference with being a Pop group of the 70/80s and now. Back then you had to be able to play the instruments, and sing without the aid a computer.
True, however there was a lot of really pompous, pretentious, boring "rock" bands back then that were being portrayed as 'serious' rock, the likes of which Sweet never fit in with. Bands like Yes and Emerson, Lake, & Palmer that were all about technical proficiency and self-indulgent "virtuosity". Sweet definitely had the talent to go that way, had they so chosen... but instead they didn't take themselves too seriously and rocked out like their asses were on fire. Thank fuck for that. Maybe the critics and the arty college types wrote them off as being a "pop group for 12 year old girls", but history has shown that they were definitely *NOT* that. It's not like Sweet were another Bay City Rollers. They were the perfect band for their time, and they influenced so much of what was to come with punk, heavy metal, and other new genres. Even today, young kids are still listening to their music. Can't really say the same for bands like Yes, ELP, or Genesis.
@@Brewzerr I was a little kid when ELP played CalJam'74. Never followed them, always loved rock 'n roll. Anyway, I recently saw a video of that concert and was shocked at how ridiculously horrible ELP was. I mean, what the hell were they doing? They weren't even close to rock 'n roll.
@@tonybrown8006 Exactly. It was all just a bunch of pretentious art school wankery, but there sure were a lot of people who bought into that crap. As you can see from that butthurt zigsvids comment, they're still out there. My initial comment must have disrupted his wank session to his 20 minute Rick Wakeman keyboard solos. Oh well. He even blocked me before I had a chance to respond. Typical.
I spent the best years of my life (adolescence) listening to this music. unfortunately they have never played in my country and this is the first time that I can see how they were on stage! I am moved and excited as a fifteen year even though I am 57 :) thank you my friends!
I wonder if the film crew recorded the whole show. If they did, then this gig should absolutely be released on DVD!! I know a CD exists yes but how about a DVD? This is pure live, and not any playback like Top of the Pops performances... \m/
@@Brewzerr At least there's a great live '74 performance of several songs on Beat Club or MusikLaden. It was never shown on TV, but it's here on the 'Tube. Good sound, too -- I mean, hey, the Germans always did a good job with that.
A vastly underrated live band. Pete Townsend wanted The Sweet to support the Who, but a terrible attack on Brian Connolly put paid to that dream gig. If this live set had been released in 1974, it would have been a different story. Up there with "Made In Japan" and "Live And Dangerous". They were really that good.
@John C Yes, he was attacked by some thugs just outside of a pub. They beat him pretty badly. Kicked him in the throat, which for a singer is like a guitarist having his hands crushed in a baler. It altered Brian's vocals profoundly. If you listen to those Musikladen clips (which were recorded not long after the incident), you can hear how distorted his vocals are. He still sounds great, but a bit rough. The attack was pretty bad. He suffered from PTSD after that and it exacerbated his drinking.
I was ten years old in 1973 and the music was great. Now I'm 60 years old and I hear this songs at home, in my car, at every place...... The best song from Sweet- I think- ist "Healer".
Just watching these guys .from LA I came to realize if it wasn't for these guys we wouldn't have Mötley Crue. Or maybe even GnR all these years later .so yeah!!! Sweet Roxx
This was my favourite Sweet track when I was at school and seeing it again here I understand why - absolutely mind blowing performance here. And Steve makes my heart race, even now!!
Listen to this and then listen to this again so you fully appreciate just how kickass this performance is! Sweet were highly underrated and never taken seriously because of their early bubblegum pop songs; they were more or less a puppet group for the Chinn/Chapman songwriting and producing duo, and also that session musicians were used on their early hits. By the time that Sweet broke free from Chinn/Chapman, began writing their own material and went in a harder rock direction, they were pretty much shunned and ignored. Mick Tucker in particular was one of the greatest 70's British rock drummers; when the greatest rock drummer of all time John Bonham is a big fan of yours, you know you're special! 🥁👊🙏🇬🇧 R.I.P. Mick Tucker, Steve Priest and Brian Connolly
Totally agree Morris! I'm sick of people putting artists and bands into a certain category and in the case of The Sweet, to me they were simply a great rock band, PERIOD!!
Glam was the look but the music was never better. Glam attracted me in the late 70s when I was in HS because NOBODY looked cooler to me than Ian Hunter. I was younger than the hippies in America and loved to play music that would piss my Aunt off. I still laugh the first time I blasted the Stooges Raw Power album.....lol She hated it and would leave. Pissing hippies off was easy with Slade Sweet or the Stooges.
I'm not really sure why a glam band isn't supposed to 'rock'? Most of the 70's glam bands rocked like fuck. T. Rex, Slade, the original Alice Cooper band, Mott The Hoople, and Ziggy-era Bowie all very much rocked very hard. Just because they camped it up with make-up, platform boots, and androgynous gear had no bearing whatsoever on their sound or level of aggression. Look at the New York Dolls for fuck's sake. They were probably the glammiest band of them all, but they scorched live and helped start punk rock. It was all done to piss off the hippies. If anything, the glam thing was all part of the appeal with Sweet. If they had come out in 1972 looking the way they did at the end of the 70's with perms and mustaches then it wouldn't have had nearly the same bite. Nah, the glam thing was perfect for them, and most of the glam bands from back then rocked the roof off.
He was a fantastic player. A Jet Harris disciple and better than many other bassists of the era. Sweet Fanny Adams and Desolation Boulevard have some great jazzy parts within some of the songs that show his versatility. And that tone...
@@dontommaso2760 Well said. Another bass player from that era with a similar style and ethos comes to mind... Dennis Dunaway from the original Alice Cooper Band.
@@Brewzerr Yes, definitely...haven't played them for a while so thanks for the reminder ;) Everyone gives Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner credit for their playing (and rightly so) but forget about Dunaway's bass skills. I had to look up what he is up to now and it turns out he is playing with Joe and Albert Bouchard from the Blue Öyster Cult in Blue Coupe. Will check them out tonight!
@@dontommaso2760 Dennis also recently wrote a book of his memoirs from the Alice days, called "Snakes! Guillotines! Electric Chairs! My Adventures in the Alice Cooper Group". I've already read through it 3 times. Really great stuff. He has a photographic memory. I've been a longtime Alice fan since I was just a kid, and thought I knew everything about them, but this book taught me more than a few new things. I highly recommend that one if you're a fan of the original Alice Cooper Band.
I'm Italian. My father have LP "Live in England '73" . I think Brian Connolly was one of the best voice ever. I love this band. MERAVIGLIOSI

Very good rock music and good rock bands. Relaxing to listen to. Thank you very much.👍👍👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
Big difference with being a Pop group of the 70/80s and now. Back then you had to be able to play the instruments, and sing without the aid a computer.
Yes, I agree: "Totally underrated giants of British rock and pop." great musicians. Best singer/front man ever. Sweet was not the same without Brian!
50 years ago this month. And no laptop needed to perform as a band and blow the doors off the venue.
Great, Great, Great. TOP Live Performance and a very good sound at the "70"
What a great band.
Back then music as so good that people thought this was a pop group for 12yo girls. They'd blow away almost any rock band of the present day.
@@Brewzerr Just fuck off...
Typical.
@@ZIGSVIDS Did someone get their widdle feewings hurt? Suck it up, buttercup.
Brian war einzigartig und wird unvergessen bleiben 🥰
I spent the best years of my life (adolescence) listening to this music. unfortunately they have never played in my country and this is the first time that I can see how they were on stage! I am moved and excited as a fifteen year even though I am 57 :) thank you my friends!
I wonder if the film crew recorded the whole show. If they did, then this gig should absolutely be released on DVD!! I know a CD exists yes but how about a DVD? This is pure live, and not any playback like Top of the Pops performances... \m/
It`s only Hell Raiser - The rest of the Rainbow video material got " lost" it`s said.... which is a darn shame!
You're Not Wrong For Loving Me -- another one song with video from the concert Live In The Rainbow
@@Cl4rendon Oh man... that is a fucking tragedy. I'd kill to see the rest of this gig.
@@Brewzerr At least there's a great live '74 performance of several songs on Beat Club or MusikLaden. It was never shown on TV, but it's here on the 'Tube. Good sound, too -- I mean, hey, the Germans always did a good job with that.
We want Sweet !
Permanently
Absolutely right !!
A vastly underrated live band.
Pete Townsend wanted The Sweet to support the Who, but a terrible attack on
Brian Connolly put paid to that dream gig. If this live set had been released in 1974,
it would have been a different story. Up there with "Made In Japan" and "Live And
Dangerous". They were really that good.
There were other more "respectable" established rock gatherings. Brian wasn't injured forever. They should have pushed for more concerts in Britain.
Ironically, although I didn’t get to see Sweet live, I did get to see The Who and it was my least favorite concert. Sweet would have creamed them.
Seems he has that effect on all us gals :-D
My fave hit as well.Another - Teenage Rampage. ( That' s the essense of Sweet band)
R.I.P. Mick Tucker, Steve Priest and Brian Connolly
Sad days...R.I.P. Steve Priest,72. June 5, 2020
Incredible. Nothing beats 70s rock. Nothing.
It was christmas time withThe Sweet in London...thanks..I was here
Unfairly labeled 'glam rock'. These guys rocked, and hard! They had the look and sound to garner more respect than they got! A shame.
I still laugh the first time I blasted the Stooges Raw Power album.....lol
She hated it and would leave.
Pissing hippies off was easy with Slade Sweet or the Stooges.
1st band I ever seen live, and they got better 4 a while writing their songs,
According to Steve in an interview they are not glam rock...he stated that they are pop rock band...and glam rock started in top of the pops.
Habe THE SWEET in den 70er-Jahren in Offenbach LIVE erlebt. Tolles Concert..
Allesamt klasse Musiker..!!
Motley Crue stole their sound.
Just freaking amazing!!🎤🎸🥁😊
Absolutely superb. Steve Priest is a great player and is oozing humour. God bless them all...
@@Brewzerr Cheers mate - found it on Amazon so it is on its way now.
