1) No where in any US Army field manual does it state that the Medium Tank M4 (Sherman) should not engage in tank on tank action. See any article or video produced by Lt. Col. Nicholas Moran USA. 2) The "E8" in M4A3E8 was for the "experimental" HVSS suspension only not the 76mm gun. Sherman tanks for the US Army ( M4A3) manufactured after Jan 1944 were equipped with T23 turret mounting the 76mm gun. 76mm Sherman tanks were available for D-Day but were not fielded at that time due to ammunition supply issues and the time needed to re-train crews with the new 76mm. 75mm Shermans were deemed as performing well on the Italian front and therefore considered adequate for combat in Northern Europe.

What about other aspects such as crew vision devices and turret rotation, where the Sherman was far better. When playing to its strengths, Sherman’s repeatedly bested all the German panzers.
