    Please don’t throw away your Rolec chargers it is important that we upgrade things. These chargers are easily upgraded. I use Octopus Go tariff so fitted a timing module next to the RCBO and linked it to the communication cable to the EV. These chargers have easy available spares and are very easily to upgrade. I love the way they just use a din rail and there is plenty of space.
    I personally prefer to avoid WIFI switching and apps as they are less reliable.

    I recently did a commercial twin outlet single phase Rolec. Customer decided that 22kW was pointless since their Polestar cars would only charge at 11kW anyway. Reasonable looking box but internals were clearly an afterthough, couldn't reach the screws on the RCD at the top to check tightness, designed to hang on the top screws making it very hard to keep water out without sealing round the entire box and even worse for a single phase product, both outlets had been combined thus requiring a 63A single feed off a single phase!! Who is going to do that unless a 300A supply? Had to separate out the outlets for two supplies thus destroying the warranty. Obviously had no PEN fault protection and had two install 2 GARO upstream! What is the benefit of having upstream RCDs now other than saving money for the manufacturer? Real fun testing the units and running back to consumer unit for every trip! Final nail in Rolec's coffin was the fact that if the RCD tripped inside the unit, 6 security screws have to be removed to allow reset and the silly lights on the unit 24 hours really attracted the wrong sort of attention. Rolec deserve to lose their market entirely with this sort of poor design.
    Another point often missing is the reliance on WiFi at the location of the charge point - my WiFi is not great outside the house. Should us electricians also have to deal with WiFi issues?
    I try to avoid charge points that only support WiFi, can not be used without a phone app, have no RCD A type + DC protection + PEN fault protection or use Raspberry Pie controllers which are a poor excuse for proper PCB design.
    Finally, it would be great if you can also highlight what support of OCPP actually means. Charge points with this protocol can be connected to different back ends and not tied to the manufacturer (Zappi is an example of one that can only talk to Myenergi because it has no OCPP support)
    Great job though, love your videos

    Can you look at diversity within a typical home as it feels the existing calculations are perhaps no longer appropriate. For example, the MD of my home was calculated by an EV installer as 69A yet our house typically pulls about 55A of an early evening before the 7kW EV charger is installed. With an 80A main fuse this will overload the fuse? (the EV charger to be installed - BP Pulse - cannot load balance).

    • @tceng9449
      @tceng9449 2 года назад +1

      It depends, but you can get a good idea of average yields for an installation here: re.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pvg_tools/en/#PVP
      If you put in a nominally 1kW array, the angle, orientation and where you'd install it you can get curves giving you the average yield month by month.
      You could do 7.2kW with a 7.2kW array in May but you might be looking at a 72kW array to do the same on a grey January morning. Unless you're in a hurry it would be easier to limit charge power a bit.
      Depending on where you are it can also make a huge difference. Central northern England (around Leeds for instance) is pretty bad for irradiation and you can over-spec an array 30-40% or more over inverter capacity before you start noticing any reduction in yield.

    In a domestic environment I always fit tethered units. IMO Zappi for ease of installation, especially it you have solar and not too bad on the eyes, however if you install a Harvi it does reduce the installation to 65 Amps. for value Ohme, how ever you fit it you can't getaway from the fact it's butt ugly. The Hypervolt is very popular at the moment, I like the fact you have to install A Type RCD at source with these.

    Sadly what you’re discussing towards the end video, sounds like a nightmarish disaster in the making, where only the consumer is going to lose. I’m thinking about the smart meter rollout as a working example, where in my own circumstance, the house I recently moved to had a smart meter installed before my ownership, which neither of the suppliers I’ve had since moving could use. I’m certain that’s not an isolated case.
    Similarly if you consider common issues encountered on EICRs for fairly well established standards, how the grossly inconsistent and standardisation neglected car charger market is ever going to deliver a reliable functional product with any longevity is beyond me. And that’s now at present before any ‘smart’ controls and variable tariffs.
    If only we had a body of Electrical Engineers whose job it was work with industry to develop and set solid rules for these sort of things. 🤪

    Interesting as ever. I fear that in a few years electricity during the night will cost the same as during the day as "off peak" demand for domestic dwellings could be greater than their day time demand. Solar of course does not work very well "off peak" unless you have storage batteries. I still don't think most of the cables and transformers under the control of our DNO's feeding our homes will cope during the night with many homes possibly drawing a continuous 7 Kw load (electrical infrastructure in my area is 47 years old). We also will have to provide the power to charge the 2 million plus white vans up every night and they may have even greater energy requirements. Not forgetting all the heat pumps which due to low temperature heat output making you leave your heating on 24/7 (perhaps an additional 22 million 3Kw or more load on the network).

      One of our highest call outs in the south east currently is pen faults and low incoming voltage due to aging infrastructure (late 40s early 50s - 70-80 years old). It's already causing issues if only one or two people have EV's charging at any time (natural gas mainstay area so hasn't shown as an issue up until now).

    I have never installed a EV charger. But what I’m saying may be right or wrong. I know of 3 people with Electric cars and all 3 said the same . They don’t want a proper charger as they think the electric supplier will control when they can charge in the future and secondly they shorten the life of there batteries.
    That’s there option not mine
    In my opinion what’s the life span of this smart stuff. A smart phone only a few years old ,apps can’t be updated . I give up counting the times a smart meter has gone dumb. Smart stuff will save money in the short run but in the long run it often doesn’t last costing more to replace. I take it’s these chargers have relays cutting in and out as well how long will these last . I drive a 20 year old van . It’s reliable and if it does go wrong it cost next to nothing to repair. Other people I know drive much more modern vans . Yes they get extra MPG but the times they complain that they have had to pay out hundreds or thousands when they go wrong. I know someone who repairs domestic appliances . In his opinion it’s the kiss of death when in the future these smart things go wrong .

    We traded in my wife's old Acura MDX that averaged 13mpg around town for a 2022 BMW X5 45e PHEV. It get's about 35 miles of range per charge on pure electric power, which is all she uses. The car still has the same unused fuel in the tank as when we bought it.
    Our local electricity provider sold me the charger, a Juicebox40, for $177 (after instant rebate) and I spent another $150 on 8-3 Romex, 40A breaker, and RV outlet box. My wife and I installed it all in just a few hours one Sunday morning.
    We also get a $.05/kwh discount when using the wifi connected charger between 11pm and 6am. The car charges from 10-100% in just a few hours.
    I've calculated that we pay about 1/5th the cost of gasoline per mile than with the old car.
    The new car also gets us $2000 state and $7500 federal tax credits. 🙂

    I am not a fan of RCD at source for anyone that's currently app selling their driveway and charger access. It's one thing to share your driveway but it's another to give random people access to your consumer unit. Unless you're going to have an IP rated unit outside and that as the source but a cluttered outside wall is not something many home owners want. Not surprised the Anderson A2 isn't up there but they now don't supply it with built in Type A or a wired internet connection.
    As for more people having smart connected appliances as prices go up, no. People just need to change their habits like they did when E7/E10 was a mainstay and time control their washing and drying loads for over night etc. Things don't have to be smart if people actually think, it's not good to encourage people to off load responsibilities to tech.

    I had seen this video and was a little curious as to why the Rolec is not on that wall. Then I found your Rolec video (admittedly around two years old) where you praise the Rolec highly. Still I wonder why the Rolec has fallen such out of favour when it seems as if it was the bee's knees of home chargers.

    • @efixx

      ROLEC was the first charger we reviewed and out main aim was to understand what’s inside. In two years EV chargers have evolved and now need to be smart and cater for additional safety features such as PEN fault protection.

    I think I’ll stick with my Rolec and basic dual tariff meter, none of this smart tech. I plug my car in whenever I like and set off peak hours within the car. I want my car charged when I wake up without interference from my provider.
    I may purchase a few Rolecs and keep in stock, can see people wanting non smart chargers further down the line.

    I think the rule should be for the manufactures to make their "innovations" wire up and done. It's not down to the sparky to be a tech support. Wire up a fixed appliance, the rest is on the user and maufacturer how to use it. Which changes every 3 months.

    different than a caravan, and the vehicle regulates its own charge - so I am informed ?

    • @NicolasRaimo
      @NicolasRaimo 2 года назад

      Carvans are not hooked up to a very large capacity DC battery with 400v or even the new 800v packs that could potentially leak DC back into the system and blind the RCD. You could install separate earth stakes and some ev chargers don't have built in PEN fault but how many earth rods you may need on each site and how easy may it be to install them are other questions. Also the car can manage some aspects but not all.

    • @JamesJames-um5xq
      @JamesJames-um5xq 2 года назад

      I was thinking the same, most domestic charge at a max rate of 7Kw (about 30 A), so why not just have a commando socket. There are leads available now with the Pen fault detections and RCD protection built in so no need really for a dedicated wall mounted charger. However its the smart tech in the wall mounted charger that people seem to like as it can save them money, the DNO's also like smart chargers as they can relieve pressure on the grid. I reckon sooner or later it will be compulsory for all car chargers to be smart. In fact I reckon that alot of people will just get fed up with cars and not bother.

    Two things I'm not happy about with this video. Firstly, why are we taking advice on installing EV Charge Points from a non-electrician. Secondly, I don't like that the Ohm EVCP is being praised for coming pre-wired with a cable to connect into a junction box next to the charge point... It is just moving the point of potential water ingress from the EVCP to the junction box and frankly looks absolute shite having an extra box on the wall

      @NicolasRaimo 2 года назад

      Hi Jonathan your correct am not an electrian but I have got a background in electronics and IT also I have installed all these units and used them. I've also used all the userside features which is more imporant than what an installer likes or dislikes. Moving to the juncation box can look horrid i agree but every install will be diffrent some it can be hidden internally for example but having this preleaded does mean if the failure is the junction box there is a clear mark on where the fault ocured and who's at fault. The best design in this case might be easee which doesn't let you into the internals using its mouting block but the app isn't as feature rich as ohme.
