  • Or, rather, Austro-Hungarian improvement. But that would be a long title.
The first aircraft overview I did, a year ago, was the Albatros (one 's') D.III. At the time, I briefly looked at the Austro-Hungarian model. This was, in almost all respects, an improvement on the base model. To the point of being at least as good- if not slightly better than -the D.V.
In this video, I'll look at it in a bit more detail. While also functioning as a bit of a refresher course on the previous video.

It's good to hear about the planes in the service of other nations during the Great War, especially one like the D.III that found a proper home in Austria-Hungary, so to speak, and continued to serve after the end of the war.

I really like these aviation-based videos, there’s not enough on planes from the Great War, let alone from the side of the Central Powers. A video on Ottoman / German foreign brigade aircraft would be very cool too!

Hey this is a good one! I like how you switched it up a bit. Gave it a like and full view in the hopes the algorithm pushes it.

One of the most beautiful aircraft ever flown.

For those interested there’s a excellent reference book on the A-H Oef/ D.III series published by JaPo. It’s a excellent source of information and Aces. Though hard to find.

The Albatros D V had a small diagonal strut at the bottom of the V struts to stiffen the wing attachment. Theodore von Kármán tells about the problem with the Austrian machine guns in his autobiography, The Wind and Beyond.

    Austrian aviation enthusiasts here.
The problem with the schwarzlose was not that it was inherently unreliable.
In fact it was quite reliable and used into ww2. Notably the hungarian army and the SS.
But they had two issues when used in aircraft.
First the had an cartridge oiling system that sprayed oil into the slipstream, potentially causing problems for the pilot.
Thats the reason why they where buried within the fuselage to avoid said problem.
The other was that, because of the deign of the firing mechanism, the exact timing of the shoots could vary slightly. One would not notice it turing firing on the ground, but one could not exactly tell at witch point tge bullet would pass thru the propeller arc.
This caused issues when trying to synchronize the gun and therefore it took quitevlong to get thd system working properly.
For that reason you see the 'baby coffin ' gunpots used for quite some time after most other nations had synchronized guns in use.
It was also advised to the pilots to only use the gun in a specific rpm range to minimize the risk for thd propeller.
Thats why austrian planes used a ridiculously oversized rpm gauge, to aid the pilots to stay within this rpm range while firing.
In austrian literature it is alo explained that ths problem with the original DIIIs wing was that the single wingspar if yhd lower wing was located behind the center of lift of the wing profile. At higher speeds this would cause the wings leadingvedge to twist upwards causing a flutter that would eventually lead to rapid disassembly of the fing structure.
The austrians fixed the problem by simply adding a second wingspar in front of the center of lift therby eliminating the problem completely.

The early S.E.5 was grounded briefly due to wing issues, too. Odd how you don't hear about that much...

Love all the Oeffag variants. With the exception of the choice of Schwarzlose M series, superior in all aspects! Thank you for this.
