- What it was like in the Crowd at the 2022 Kentucky Derby - Rich Strike Wins!
Less than 48 hours before the Derby, the #20 horse, Ethereal Road, scratched. This allowed #21 Rich Strike to enter the race. Rich Strike was not even supposed to be in the race. His odds of winning at the time the race started were 80-1. He wasn't on anyone's radar.

The cheers to silence after the people realized what just happened is priceless.
Hilarious 🤣
They really didn’t understand.
I would say it's more so people actually bet on the other two horses as they were the favorite. There where a lot of disappointed and pissed off fans believe me
Rich Strike told those other horses "hold my beer, I gotta RUN!" How he turned on the jets and chased down the leaders was just incredible.
Love seeing him looking at them as he passes.
Isn't it supposed to be a mint julep? 😋
No beer didn't get him there and wouldn't get him there
My first derby I got to be at and it was brilliant. I knew a woman who picked 21# for $5 to win. $409 in winnings!! All because her 2 year old picked him.
called lucky
Can I borrow that kid the next time I go to the track?
Lol 😂 that’s cute. Kid knows his horses. That’s his money. Better put that in a horsey-bank for him.
@@musiclover148
No kidding lol 😂
@@onlythewise1 called blessed
As 21 strutted down the street, no one paid him any attention, they didn’t bother to look at him, that brought tears to my eyes…he is a gem!
I'm with you..I thought so too! You just never know who has that "it" factor in life. Take care.
I was looking for the jockey and I found jockey #21 way far in the back of the pack. I say he analyzed his strategy from the back and his skill and technique were so superb it was Magnificient on his superb judgment how he found himself and the horse up in front was so unbelievable I thought I was dreaming when I said, well my, my I have just seen jockey #21 far in the back of the pack. I was stunned to disbelief. He said once he got upfront he was like a nose ahead he said to himself "I think I got this derby", and again he said, "I think I got this derby".🙏🙏🏇🐴🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
The Derby is always so exciting but this one was the best! Great year to be there. You had great seats!!
Native Louisvillian here. My grandfather attended 55 straight Derbies. He bought stock in the Jockey Club, which became Churchill Downs before WWI. His father-in-law was offered the Presidency of Churchill Downs in the early 1920s and turned it down. At one time my extended family had 14 boxes. Not anymore. The last we lost was on the finish line 3 rows back, the space now part of the Stretch Bar Club. We have made considerable money from owning Churchill Downs stock, but we can't afford to go now. Most Louisvillians not entertaining out of town clients stay home these days. I haven't been since 1975.
😥
I felt the goosebumps on my body just watching the video. Crazy finish
Extraordinarily, with the monumentally horizontal subject of a race track, some people still held their phones vertically!
This was the most exciting horse race I have ever seen, on tv, live or in the past. This was a clean even handed race. Does anyone find it ironic that suspended Bob Baffert who was not allowed at Churchill Downs. Bob usually has his best horses block other riders and his best horse given the best opportunity for the win.
Bob Baffert has 6 Kentucky Derby wins, unreal ??!! Watch interview after California Chrome in Kentucky Derby.
Secretariat was a great horse, but there wew only 6 horses in those races
You're out of your mind. Do you think any of those other Jockeys are willing to through away a chance at winning the Kentucky Derby just to play a silly game of blocking other horses during the stretch run of the Derby?
@Elizabeth Bergman - thanks captain obvious. That stuff goes on all the time. What does it have to do with the crazy idea that Baffert was winning the Derby by employing a strategy of having his horses run interference and it gave an edge to his favorite? Then claiming it was a better race because Baffert wasn't there and his strategy wasn't in place? Besides, of his six wins, most of the time Baffert only had one horse in the race.
@@dwaynecoy1871 I never mentioned a jockey!! I mentioned Bob Baffert the trainer who makes much more money than the jockeys. Watch his 6 Kentucky Derby wins, especially the Kentucky Derby when California Chrome lost. The irony that Bob was not allowed in Churchill Downs this year due to his suspension gave us a fair and clean race.
@@dwaynecoy1871 I am not out of my mind Dwayne!!!
I gotta tell ya - what we saw here was the horse racing equivalent of the 1969 New York Mets/1988 Los Angeles Dodgers.
Rich Strike was the Kirk Gibson of the race, great comparison. I keep watching the video of the race and it is magical. Not sure if you know that trainer Eric Reed lost about 24 horses in a fire couple of years ago, he was ready to quit back then.
People do not realize how far down the track it is to the finish line. Hollywood Park Racetrack was like that too. Thank you for sharing such an exciting Kentucky Derby race.
Hmmm. Got to say that crowd took the upset better than they did in 1999 when Charismatic upset the field. I was there, a little closer to the rail, and the finish line and the groan that swept across Churchill sounded like the biggest body blow in history.
I had a pick 3 fillies. I needed 3 or 10 to win. 610$ or 300 and change payout. I have a video of me losing my shit in infeild as Rich Strike passed.
Gentleman next to me mentioned he had 80-1, then it clicked.
I put 5$ on every horse with odds over 30-1....
It was a wonderful event regardless.
Such excitement. Adrenaline. Crazy.
Thank you for making this
Whoa! Great footage of the race.
Rich Strike was on MY radar---BOOM!!! $$$
I have a mild case of agoraphobia, and watching this makes me so glad for youtube. No only do you not have to put up with all those people, but you can acutally see the race. Glad I was NOT there. hehe.
De Venezuela 🇻🇪 para el mundo el mejor Jockey Sonny Leon
It was a great ride. He just got a 4 day suspension for careless riding
I see, I see the drone that captured the awesome footage that can also been seen on YT !!!! -every tech nerd, probably.
that boy was FLYING
The fact noone in the crowd was going wild shows how little he was played.
Legendary call . . .
amazing run by rich strike! the crowd went silent when he won...
Congrats on Rich Strike n jockey n owner n trainer wins da derby but now today I saw news that they will not run him in da Preakness race but go to Belmont n run because his training run time of 5 weeks will stay that way . Am like why jot go for the triple crown n it’s beeen this way for years
The crowd was tunned
Don't you just love it????
I didn't realize that, holy shit that's unreal.
Superspreader event
And the horses aren't going to take a knee
Increible

Soooo.... What happened to your sailing channel ??
She’s beautiful in her hat!!!
She says, thanks! 😉
that horse stared down the other horses as he passed them. absolutely amazing
I know, lots of personality.
Rich Strike did in fact stare down the horses to his right, awesome race!
Amazing!
An historical race!
I'm so glad and proud of that horse's jockey, he is from my country and a good friend of mine, he did a great job! 👏👏
Where both of you from ?

Tell him I am moved every time I watch his art work that day, every stride and strategy is incredible
How exciting, especially having his family there. It truly was an incredible race
Such a drag no one caught the owner, trainer, family and friends watching the race. They must have been going crazy when they realized they could, then did, win.
Yeah, I'm sure their crews were on the favourite's. big loss!
I think there is a video out. The trainer passed out and fell down. He said he didn't even get to see him cross the finish line.
I was an Uber driver during Derby week. It was so much fun meeting the vast variety of fans attending, everyone from those coming in on private planes to those who wanted to party in the infield. People were very generous and all were gracious. I actually told one fan to throw a $10.00 bet on the long shot (didn't even know the horses name) because you just never know. I was thinking of Mine That Bird victory who overcame long odds, though not 80-1. I don't know if she did or not but if she did, then that will have gotten me at least one vote for Uber driver of the year.
@Cath_be_good77 sure
LOL that's good! I had the premonition just as he was going into the gate that he was going to win, but of course I didn't bet because I was sitting in my living room watching, and we don't have online betting here.
That's incredible! As Rich Strike passes you, he's FIVE lengths behind. WIth a f'n furlong to go! This is like Jordan leaping from the free throw line.
Rich Strike is the most spectacular horse in this year's Kentucky Derby. Jordan was a spectacular basketball player in the NBA.
Awesome analogy - thank you for that keen insight.
I agree 100%
CONGRATULLATION FROM VENEZUELA FOR GREAT TRAINNING AND OUR JOCKEY,THEY DID A GREAT JOB
I was in the infield and when we saw rich strike cross the finish line it went dead silent. That’s the sound people make when they lose a lot of money
Rich Strike deserves to be "athlete of the year"
Someone get this horse on Time Magazine 😃
….ABSOLUTELY!
You missed the story
The finish was one of the greatest sprint finishes in the entire history of sports, ALL sports
The aerial view of this race is NOT to be missed. It's on RUclips somewhere. Seeing those two playing "Lane hockey" dipping in and out of JUST enough space between other horses so as not to bump, but keep gaining inch by inch....phenomenal.
Thanks for taking me to the Derby, it was fantastic!! As a little girl I watched Secretariat win his amazing races. This is the first time I got to see the race from the stands.
Goose bumps... the same as seeing Secretariat run. Man, what a finishing stretch for Rich!
Truly....from last after the start to winning....will definitely live on in horse racing lore like Secretariat at the Belmont.
I have NEVER seen a horse light the afterburners like that.
Even if you lost money on your bet, you had to be going nuts for that horse.
I wasn't lol ... Dead silence at Santa Anita
Definitely was taking it seriously and not horsing around
@@michaellucas669 lol, still a beautiful story. One for the movies.
@@monikerone3203 it was for sure ..... Just nobody could believe it .. that horse was the first horse to toss if you look at the form .. had only won a maiden claimer... Just unreal .. but it brings a positive spotlight to horse racing so it's great... Im just bitter because I had simplification .. he matched stride with the winner down most of the stretch .. the winner ducked inside and he went outside .. he wasn't matching strides after that lol
Yeah that was exciting!!
I’m not much for horse racing but I always experience a wave of joy when the underdog wins and this was the ultimate underdog win. Is a horse even an underdog if nobody even knows he’s there? What a great story. What a great call-the guy was screaming / laughing / crying; the best combination for the audience. The family and trainers humble, appreciative, and just as surprised as everyone else. People you would be glad to call your friends. Sometimes you need a story that restores your faith in the world and this was definitely one for me.
Sorry, he didn’t even see what was happening.
that was an amazing ride, first he has to pass three horses abreast on the outside, well first he has to move from the outside gate to the inside, then pass them, then he gets stuck behind a rail horse and jerks to the right and passes and then he is on fire, he might not be the fastest horses in derby history, but he was faster than any horse there on that day, and raced farther than any other horse, being on the outside and forced to pass on the outside twice then move to the rail for the win, what a horse, what a jockey. The jockey said he had trained this horse to RUN CALM until he told him to PUT ON THE COALS.
Yes!! This horse went from a difficult starting position and sitting at the very back of the pack to maneuvering all the way to the front with patience and grace before finding that perfect opening when he had him turn on the thrusters at full blast to surge past the leaders. Him and his jockey 100% percent EARNED this win. What a fairytale ending for the complete under-dog no one saw coming. You couldn't ask for a more exciting race.
yea when that inside lane opened up it was all over lol.
I’ll never forget my first time being at a horse track standing in the very front , it sounded like thunder the ground did shake as they all hit the finish line wheww
My wife said it was the most exciting 2 minutes she has had in years. I had to agree with her. Now she say's she is mad at me?
This reminded of the great race horse Seabiscut, coming from behind. The great race horse that was an underdog during the Great Depression. An undersized horse that was ridden by an over sized Jockey. If you have never seen the movie "Seabiscuit" I highly recommend it. Great piece of history and excellent movie and book. You can also see the original match race between Seabiscuit and triple Crown winner "War Admiral". Its on you tube.
I was at the derby too, absolutely crazy how the race played out and I’m glad to be able to say I witnessed a historic race.
Which he did: ruclips.net/video/Ifh-ZndgQyQ/видео.html
What is amazing is how Rich Strike got in in the last minute, and he was bought for $30,000 dollars. He beat MILLION dollar horses, which is also amazing. When the underdog wins everyone wins.
Besides Gibson's home run in the '89 World Series, this was the most exciting sports moment I've ever seen in my life!
LOL - beat me to it. Was going to say, there are a lot of similarities, especially if you were pulling for the A's.
1988!
Secretariet at the Belmont was just surreal.
The reaction of crowd was stunned by what just happen , I don't see man high -fives!
this was my first year! now I'm hooked! awesome race. it reminded me of mine that bird and also the race with justify!! absolutely amazing and an electric experience!!
This horse inspired me to go do a new career change when my daughters dad discouraged me because I am not that smart...eff him. I want to learn something new
Great for you to have been at such an event in person. In '82, I was at the best Indianapolis 500 ever. With eleven laps remaining the leader led by eleven seconds, ten laps, ten seconds, 8 laps, 7 seconds. 450,000+ people all on their feet screaming. You couldn't hear the cars. A woman passed out cold two seats from me. There have been closer races, but none more exciting. So glad I was there for that one. You will treasure Rich Strike's Derby forever.
i like how everyone looks around like “fuck.. did you bet any money on him??”
Rich Strike dead last at the start ❤️🔥
Rich Strike for president!!!
The crowd is screaming: I wanna be British, I wanna be British! This is Royal Ascot! This is Royal Ascot!
That was really cool. Thank you for sharing the experience. It was a great race.
Well, not my thing, but i gotta say that's pretty cool you witnessed such an upset in person, very cool, the excitement and surprise must have been fun.
Thank you thats kind😄
On the radar Nowwwwww !!! Was amazing ! Congrats to the Team
Thank the Lord above that I'm a Kentuckian! No other place I would want to live!
The roaring 20's called... they want their hats back. Or maybe they're back. Nice work Rich Strike!
No one was cheering his win. I guess they all lost their bets.
No one told Rich Strike he was bought for chump change. He just knew he didn't want those other horses in front of him. He didn't care how much they were worth. He was tired of having dirt kicked in his face. And now he will go down as one of the greatest Kentucky Derby wins in history. I love how much trust he has in his groomer. Settled right down as soon as he saw him. And that jockey! Drove Rich Strike like a race car. What an amazing story.
This is cool! The only place you can wear a big tacky hat and not get laughed at.
Rich Strike strike rich!!! Awesome run!!! 🙂
Just the he looks and runs he reminds me a secretariat another great red horse about time for another triple crown winner
I like how he was eyeing them before he passed them
Ruined my super but at least I saw history. Scratch replacement..... once in a lifetime
You can play a game of "Longshot Where's Waldo" with the finish and look for the one person in the crowd jumping up and down that apparently hit the long shot.
Ok sorry people who love this sport but the crowd didn’t go crazy it looked boring but on the other hand I’m sure in 20 years from now there will be a movie about this race lol
Looks like not many won anything and lost a lot this day. Love to see.
great rider long live Venezuela what pride, he was simply born for this moment, worthy of a movie, against all odds with a great talent! great Sonny God bless you always with health. In all honesty, this might be the greatest Kentucky Derby victory of all time. The longest shot passes the favorite right at the end. You can’t write a story better than that.
A great rider, great story but Venezuela is a socialist dictatorship not my cup of tea. Watch Secretariet win the triple crown for the greatest race ever, ever.
What a view!! thanks for posting.... such an exciting race this year
If my wife was still alive she would have put $2.00 on that horse to show. It would have paid about $2.15 back to her.You would have thought she won a million bucks. She loved Del Mar.
For as big a deal as that win was, it wasn’t reflected by the enthusiasm in the main grandstand.
Nice Work. Thanks for sharing
I've seen this happen 3 times in my horse racing handicapping career when i was actually at the track. One time the horse was scratched very late and the replacement was late to the gate, he came trotting in from off the track and after all the horses were in the gates was allowed to get in the gate. The gates opened up seconds later and he sprinted to the front, winning wire to wire! Talk about a fix! Everyone was pissed and knew we all got screwed. Somebody made a ton of money that day. My point is, whenever you see what happened with Rich Strike again somewhere - run to the window and drop whatever you can on the horse!
You did put $20 on the 21 for all your youtube followers didn't you?
It seemed like everyone was to stunned to even really cheer!
The agony of defeat. Apparently few went with the long shot.
@@navigator487 Yes. But even if you remove the betting from the equation, no one could have imagined this. I bet most people did not even know who the horse was, or even cared.
Rich Strike inspired me keep going you will succeed.
Rich Strike didn't take the lead until about 50 yards from the finish.
Awesome video! There’s just nothing like the KY Derby! I love Thoroughbred racing!
Look at all of these people watching their screens instead of the ACTUAL race right infront of them.
The funny thing is that a LOT of people thought it was the #2 horse (HAppy JAck) that won because the saddle cloth had to be "jerry rigged" with a 2 attached to a 1 because there has NEVER been a #21 horse in the field.
Rich Strike = a Buick Grand National
A lot of people lost money but this was an amazing story. Love Rich Strike. That moment when you see them at a distance turning into the final stretch…literally the most exciting moment in sports.
I won $50,000 because I put money on rich strike😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I started following horse racing because of California chrome,Amazing race!!
Wow! Just to see how far back he was as he ran past this camera and *still* closed the gap and won easily is *amazing!!*
Love Derby Day!! Even though I lost was happy for that horse... After the race he was biting the pony with the outrider on it!! Lol I was also blown away by 2:07... Totally beautiful just saying;) great Derby
Fantastic little video...thanx for sharing! 🏆 Rich Strike
