In the post race presser the trainer said he knew the worst thing that could happen was to get the call they were in and not be prepared to race. So he prepared all week like it was go time and when they got the call they were ready. True horsemanship
Prepare to win, yep.
Same here. That last move the horse and the jockey made before passing Epicenter was one of the gutsiest moves I’ve ever seen in sports.
I've watched it at least 100 times. This horse is a monster. He would've made another lap! Just the way he stared down Epicenter as he was closing in! Damn!!!
AMazing. The way the horse passed #6 Messier was unbelievable!! The colt was going inside, suddenly the jockey noticed that there was no room and he turned the horse neck 45 degrees to right, slowed down a little bit and then, ran furiosly to the line. I watched 100 times, and still, it is astonishing.
NOT to make light of it, or burst anybody's bubble but the last 1/2 mile were run in 52:27 seconds. Pedestrian... Although Rich Strike ran through traffic brilliantly, he went the last half in 50:2. The 1st half mile made all this possible. He certainly wasn't flying, everyone else backing up. In comparison, Secretariats last 1/2 were run in 46 2/5's. About 30 lengths faster than
Saturdays Derby. However Secy's 1st half mile were 20 lengths slower than Saturdays. Epicenter paid huge price last 1/4 running the race he did early. Not to mention the battles heads up.
I can't stop watching it either. It's the play by play from the announcer, caught completely by surprise. Instant classic
Epicenter once beat Rich Strike by 33 lengths...Let's not act like this horse is more than he actually is.
@@jeffj6815 just showed you how much RS has improved
This is one of the greatest upsets in sports history! When Sonny Leon pulled Rich Strike's head to the right with a few lengths to go history was ready to be made. Rich Strike went from $30,000 to who knows how many million in about 20 to 30 seconds! I wish I owned 10% of that colt.
I don't want to sound sappy, but I get teary eyed when I see videos of Secretariat's finish at the Belmont Stakes (which happened long before I was born). When I watched this race, I almost felt the same way. I knew that I was watching something special...history...and my eyes watered up. It was truly special.
I've watched this too many times to count. It still chokes me up every time.
The race itself and how he got in doesn't even paint the whole story. I don't even care how he does in terms of the triple crown, they have to make a movie about this horse, his team, and the owner.
The owner, Richard Dawson, is fairly new to racing, just getting into in the last few years.
He acquired Rich Strike last September in a CLAIMS RACE (basically a race/auction for horses whose owners can't sell them for much due to lack of performance) for 30,000 dollars. Basically nothing.
The trainer, Eric Reed, lost 23 horses in a stable fire a few years ago and had never trained a Kentucky Derby horse.
The jockey, Sonny Leon, had never ridden in the Derby.
An owner new to racing, a trainer who had never trained a Derby horse, and a Jockey who had never ridden in the Derby took a horse basically nobody wanted to the Derby and won. Combine that with the longest-shot odds, being trapped in the middle of the pack, then blazing through an opening down the stretch, passing other horses like they were standing still... that stuff is only supposed to happen in the movies. Make it happen.
Edit: this comment previously stated that the owner, Richard Dawson, lost 23 is his horses to a fire at his stable near OKC. The actual story is the trainer, Eric Reed, lost 23 horses in a fire at his facility in Kentucky. Rich Dawson just recently got into horse racing in the last few years.
Another Seabiscuit story!
100 percent it's ridiculous. And congrats to Sonny Leon. Gets an opportunity and he comes through! Hopefully he gets more shots now. That was one helluva ride.
Won't it be fun if he takes the Triple Crown?
Thank you for this
Edit: I previously stated that the owner, Richard Dawson, lost 23 is his horses to a fire at his stable near OKC. The actual story is the trainer, Eric Reed, lost 23 horses in a fire at his facility in Kentucky. Rich Dawson just recently got into horse racing in the last few years.
The craziest bit is the owner told the jockey that if he came back in 2:02:6, they'd win.
He came back 2:02:61.
It really was inspiring and folks here in Kentucky are loving this story. Guy loses his barn and horses 6 years ago to a fire, other trainers and horse people help him get going again because he is so well liked. He keeps plugging away. His Jockey is a hard worker (side note my daughter is starting her career in the horse racing industry and has ponied horses for Sony at Belterra in Cincinnati...which is kind of cool) The groom "Big Jerry" is known as a great guy and took time to mentor my daughter as a groom at Turfway park in Florence, Kentucky (also cool). Just the whole story is great and helps to wipe away some of the funk left by Baffert the past couple of years. Legit hard working folks chasing a dream....yeah...it was cool. Peace, love and bourbon from Kentucky - cheers!
Not to mention he picked Rich Strike up for 30,000 at a claims race.
Love your story!!!!!!
I love your comment! And I loved this Derby! I've watched it about 10 times since, and I've used a box of Kleenex crying " happy tears"!!!
@@johnmartin4332 it was so fun during and after the race to hear how excited my daughter was rattling off how she knew these people and how well liked they all are. Shes graduating Saturday from Morehead State in Equine Science and this was definitely an early Graduation present for her and her friends who have worked at these tracks.
@@susanwest2522 so glad you enjoyed it. Yeah getting some insight from my kiddo was really fun...(insert proud dad moment here...haha)
This horse reminds me so much of Seabiscuit. ❤️ This story should be made into a movie at some point. Amazing win for all involved!!
I can’t stop watching it either
You could say, Rich Strike took an ethereal road.
As a horse owner it was great to watch Rich Strike absolutely dominate every other horse from the top of the home stretch to the finish and beyond. From the top of the home stretch to the finish it looked like every other horse was running at 1/2 speed compared to Rich Strike. When the holes opened up the jockey made the moves and Rich Strike responded. The move between horses to have a clear run to the leaders was nothing but fantastic. To win going away after a mile and a quarter shows how strong this horse really is.
People for the past few years have been digging the grave for Horse Racing in this country. The increased number of deaths at tracks like Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Golden Gate Fields plus the ongoing Baffert drugging fiasco led to this. Then along comes an outcome like this Kentucky Derby and once again our love for Horse Racing is rekindled.
A pity...horse racing is abusive...it should die.
Wow wow and wow what an amazing job done I can't stop watching over and over what an inspiration loving it
Buster Douglas said I have the greatest upset in history knocking out Tyson......Rich Strike said hold my beer 🍺 and my oats 🤣
That's a classic comment!!!!
@@johnmartin4332 Thanks sir
How about Giant beating undefeated Patriots in Superbowl?
I 've seen over 50 Kentucky Derbys. Best one ever. The way they weaved true traffic was impressive. Fearless ride, when most riders want to go wide. Sony Leon ready for big time, or likes Ohio?
I think that’s the best race since Secretariat in 1973.
@@cmorales5 That's what I've compared it to also. A real stunner!!
In that last stretch he went by the field like the were standing still
@@cmorales5 one race I NEVER tire of watching.
It really is an inspiring story. I grew up in Baltimore where the Preakness is such a big deal. My late father would have gone nutz over this race. They'd have heard his booming voice over in the next block. Of course I hope this beautiful creature wins again in 2 weeks but even if he doesn't, he gave us all so much already.
Great jockey, athletic & quick responsive horse who loves to run.. Good chances! Reminds of Big Red's style of racing, & that's saying something. Three seconds behind that record for this race.
@@angaeltartarrose6484 wow.
Same for me. I've rewatched it a few times and it's still amazing. The aerial footage is my favorite because it really shows you the better view of how he moved through the crowd until he got that opening and exploded forward.
Gives me the chills
Go to the track.
Feel the same way, can't stop watching it! So inspiring
Sonny Leon a Venezuelan hero.
Couldn’t agree more! Gave me the chills. Unbelievable horse and rider and such humble people! Can hardly wait to see the movie!
Haha, I bet they already hired the writer
This is similar to the last at large team in the NCAA basketball tournament winning the National Championship. It was that improbable.
Fun fact: Rich Strike was named after Rich Eisen. FACTS 💙
If Rich Strike wins the Preakness, he will definitely be the favorite at the Belmont. This horse had more power and endurance than the rest of the field. The Derby usually goes to the fastest horse. But the Preakness and the Belmont require endurance.
The Preakness is the shortest distance, so speed is definitely required. However, stamina is needed too, since the horse is racing a mere 2-weeks later. Three races in 5 weeks, it's why the Triple Crown is so rare.
@@lauravalentine9488 Preakness is 1 3/16 miles as compared to the 1 1/4 miles at the Derby. The Belmont is 1 1/2 miles.
He won his maiden by 17 lengths at Churchill Downs. awesome Derby
Got claimed in that race by his current owners from his breeder/original owner, the world famous Calumet Farm. Kudos to said current owners for staying with Sonny Leon in those string of defeats leading up to the KY Derby, lots of owners would have switched to a "household name" jockey for the KY Derby, they realized the awesome chemistry between Sonny and Rich Strike.
I think this is the most important sports news of the year... if he gets the other two we are talking legend gentlemen!
That was amazing. Congratulations to all involved with the horse and jockey! Just wow.
This will be an epic film
Secretariat is one of the three greatest athletes in American history. Who cares if it’s a horse not a human!?
Arguably the best ever, that race is incredible, that horse showed the world that day what a true race horse can do all by itself, just an amazing display of talent, every cell in its body to deliver a performance the world has never been able to see again. A virtuoso, a prodigy, a unique talent exploding at that moment.
@Sam H - Secretariat, Jesse Owens and Michael Phelps (50 gold medals in top international competitions, 16 gold in Olympics) The three greatest athletes.
Lucky hand can win a poker pot. This horse and rider did not win by any kind of fluke ! When opportunity knocked, they were ready to answer ! 🇨🇦🙏❤️🇺🇦
This must be said...a brilliant race!
I'm going to watch the race again tonight for the 85th time. Best thing I've seen since AP won the TC in 2015.
I've been watching everyone, grooms trainers jockey etc etc hearing the people's and horse's story. Such a great group of people to get lucky with an amazing horse. At least sports are giving us some joy in these difficult times thanks for your reports also
To get enough points to qualify for the Derby, Rich Strike had to win his last qualifying race that was a long shot in and of itself, and he did it by only a head! There was a crazy set of circumstances that led to him getting that one point he needed. The story is insane when you look into it.
Yes, it is just a horse---and What a Horse. But Sonny Leon's ride was one for the ages. Watching the above view (drone I guess) of this (about 20 times now), it's like something scripted for a movie where all the other horses were slowed down for maximum effect---But They Weren't. They say it's the most exciting 2 minutes in sports, and this one just became the Most Exciting! WOW!!!
Sonny Leon ran a smart FEARLESS race.
@@lauravalentine9488 While Rich Strike's record is not so stellar, in his one race at Churchill Downs he won by almost 18 lengths. I think he likes that place.
Whatever that horse was eating, I want some. I fear just from watching it that it was more than oats, however. He ran like his heart was going to explode but blew ours out instead!
They did a pee test after the race and the horse came back "clear" of anything not allowed.🌹❤
A Superstar is born? Just like Seabiscuit, Rich Strike is going to be the main character in a book, minisserie, movie, soap opera, documentary, comics, cartoon, everything. And, besides, how about ?all the stories about its owner who lost everything 5 years ago? What a plot!!! . It is a novel !!!
It was definitely an amazing feeling guys… Richie 💪🏾💪🏾😍😍😍
How ironic your name, sir lol
Did you see the interview with the trainer's daughter? Very touching.
I wanted to finish 9th mid pack 😃
No where at???
This is a beautiful horse!
Strong handsome and has attitude! Oh yeah!
Loved this race Richie is Americas Horse 💛
Not sure how i stumbled into this but all I can say is.. Anything can Happen with you believe in the underdog. So much hidden in this race really. Big Win for the RED! Horses what a beauty:)
This was not an underdog, this was the longest shot, this was out of it, they put it to fill in the empty spot. The daughter of the trainer said that all they wanted was not to finish dead last, for them to finish 9th was a dream, and winning? not a chance!. But look at them, proud, doing something nobody thought possible.
I love horse racing. I’m a Pletcher fan. Love derby and Preakness and Belmont. But breeders cup if my favorite. It’s the derby for every division. I’m impressed 19 million watched this horse win. I’m more impressed from 3-5 the Preakness race averages 5.3 mil beating the NBA playoffs head to head( cekts vs bucks did just 4.6 million) the pre pre pre show did 5.2. The actual pre show did 8.5 million. IF and big if Rich strike does it in 2 weeks in Baltimore we’ll the Belmont stakes will hit massive numbers
I spend 15 minutes a year thinking about horse racing. Except for 2022. Rich Strike winning the Derby is my favorite sports highlight moment ever. I have watched the video and call of this race 100's of times and will watch it more. The best fiction writer could not write a better back story.
What an exciting race love this inspiration what a magnificent jockey and horse way to go rich strike this is the most amazing race and story god blessed team rich strike no doubt classical
Leon was amazing too. Made a lot of money in this race.
Got thumped in his first race in a maiden special weight race.
Dropped down to maiden claiming in his next race and won going away by 17 lengths.
Has not finished better than third in his next races up until yesterday.
I'm ready to watch the major motion picture of this right now.
Very well said Rich. Unbelievable.
What a great horse.
1st Zelenskey now Rich Strike. This is the year of the underdog..
Rich Strike has massive good genes. His father Keen Ice beat Triple Crown winner in similar fashion in 2015. And his Granddady, Curlin was the very famous champion and 2007 Preakness winner!
If this gets in a movie it'll be a great movie..
Aww Rich.. EISEN! Reddingite here. So glad to see your career embedded in the upper echelons. Don’t know what gate you started from but you finished in 1st place.
No such thing as just a horse! They are stories waiting to be told! I can't wait for the movie to come out. :)

Yeah…you’re right…it really is incredible story…even i watched the video of the race many times and saw how Jockey Sonny Leon handles the reign of his mount to get a space from the tailend pack to the midlle the tothe rail then veered slight to the right at the last furlong and Rich Strike runs as if there is no ore tomorrow and Jockey Leon expertly handles the reign tell the overtake #3 Epicenter and the classic win…..
Have now seen Triple Crown winners, scandals, and a world-class upset
Go to the track.
I don't have to go watch that video because I've already watched it about eighty times. What the hell, maybe a couple more times.
Absolute Gangster!!!
This marathon story is lost in time......but has some of the elements found in this epic Run To Daylight in the deep stretch -- the Los Angeles Times headline is a contemporary (July 1990) story link: "GOODWILL GAMES : ROUNDUP : Mora Is Unwanted, but Wins Marathon".
It was the 1990 Goodwill Games Seattle and Dave Mora won in a time of 2:14:50......the first American to win a marathon contested in an international sporting event since Frank Shorter in the 1972 Munich Olympic Summer Games. But Mora did not run for Team USA -- he competed as an "invited guest" -- and took the lead relatively late in the race......mile 22.
He said it's not just a horse .he's right .it's one of God's beautiful creatures.
Did this horse an jockey just peak,it's a ride that's unbelievable 😳
Don't forget Buster Douglas
I told a friend who's not a racing fan, that this was the biggest upset I've ever witnessed since Buster Douglas beat Tyson in Japan.
Surprised the odds were this low.
This is Gibson's walk off in 88

The next Seabiscuit!

Wonder if anyone got the trifecta. I kind of doubt it, but if I won that kind of money, I don't really think I would want people to know. Before you know it, people would be telling me they are my long-lost cousin, or even daughter or son, and I never had kids. I would get hit with all kinds of scams and never-ending phone calls of people asking for money like people who win a lot of money in lotteries in states that don't keep it a secret who won the state lottery.
You don’t think the insiders scored “big” at the pari mutual windows?
@@mikeyposs3132 I am not saying that. Just saying some might not want to blast to the public their winnings, especially if they got the trifecta in this year's Kentucky Derby which comes to more than a quarter million dollars. When people find out someone just won a lot of money, they get bothered by non-relatives coming out of the woodwork as long-lost relatives wanting some of those winnings. Happens all the time with winners of large lotteries in states where your winning has to be publicly announced.
@@hannahwebb4846 Hannah - if true the Derby winnings, alone, would let relatives and friends that their financial status has changed!!!
sonny Leon won that race, not rich strike IMHO! 🎉🎉🎉
Yes, the Jockey did a great job. But, there’s a whole team of individuals that go into making a race winner.
Yes, Sonny's riding was amazing but the horse had the power to, once the track cleared in front, it blew past all the other horses. The horse has to get some credit here, it is an awesome colt, to deny that is to be unfair. This horse has guts, it is an amazing horse indeed.
IMO, they're about the best TEAM I've seen in a long time.
It was a great run but not as spectacular as Mine that Bird's in my opinion.
A no name underdog, joins into the competition the same day it's happening. Wins the whole thing and then immediately talks trash (Aka the horse starts biting) to other horses and jockeys 🤣🤣 You couldn't write it any better
Not happy with the Outrider at ALL!! 🤔
I don't care if the horse ate him alive.. Beautiful Ride by Sonny🤠
The story is inspiring. But what people should REALLY be talking about is the job that Rich Strike’s jockey did to pull off that upset.
He did ok
That was a fluke! He won’t hit the board in the Preakness or Belmont!! 💯
I like your podcast a lot , but you are very selfish when you don’t take into account the jockey. What a fantastic way of handling a horse looking for rhe opportunities during the race . Mention him .by the way , his name is Sonny Leon . Thank you Rick
