The scene where the girl escaped ( 1:25:41 ) while her mother cried really broke me. Imagine you are a child, in a world where your people are being gunned down left and right, and everyone is scared and you are confused. You suddenly are forced to jump out of a moving train that will determine if you survive or not. You are forced to leave your mother, to never see her again, and make a desperate dash for safety. I was on the verge of sobbing at this scene. My heart breaks for the children who went through the Holocaust.

note: I am an american of european christian descent. currently an agnostic
Indeed. Sadly the Israelis are in denial that the perpatrators of the Holacaust were Europeans. And in the long historical comparison between the two "super powers" Christian(not following the prince of peace jesus) and the Islamic empire(not following the true translation of Muhammad's Quran) warring at each other for around 1200 years, In conclusion Jews were treated better in the Islamic empire(with the exception of Poland which was a safe haven for Jews from "christian" persecution and genocide from the 14th century to 1939). Make the distinction between Jews and Israelis. Poll after Poll conclude Jews living outside Israel are against Israeli persecution, occupation and killing Gazans and a little less so in what is left of the west bank.
The common Israeli is brainwashed about history. They even take their children and teenagers to the GERMAN NAZI death camps in Poland. I am astounded how these visits to nazi german death camps are psychologically displaced, projected that now the Palestinians are to be responsible for what Europe did to the Jews.
Leaders of the US, UK, Aipac even Benjamin Netanyahu don't give two shits about the Judaism. These elite few are neocons and neoliberals and there main concern is gaining power and money from war, Just as all wealthy powerful leaders down through the ages have riled up the common people, denied of education by their leaders to go to war from them by using demonization of the other argument.

Et pour ce qui concerne ce peuple, quel contraste entre leur style de vie, leur solidarité, leur joie de vivre, leur musique et leurs danse, et l'horreur que leur ont fait vivre le sadisme bien contrôlé des nazis. Rudolph Hoess depicted in this movie as the commendandt of Auschwitz was captured at the end of the war and sentenced to death by a Polish Court. to be hanged on his own camp gallows.
His prison keepers gave him time to write an autobiography. Interesting reading to learn about his different thoughts about the people in his "care" From reading his story it would seem that two different groups that he in his own twisted way felt sorry for. The Gypsies and German 7th Day Adventist (pacifists). I would recommend the book for anyone interested in seeing how just another human being can become a monster when given his assignment to perform.
Shortly before his execution he was asked whether or not he had any regrets... and he said yes I do, "I wish I had spent more time with my children and Family" That was it. Like a businessman who spent too many hours working late. Chilling how easy it was for him.

he was mentally ill, like many other, most of them in fact. That does NOT diminish the horror they committed, like all mass murderer in recent history.
in particular the real horrible ones, like saddam Hussein, Pinochet, George Bush (both of them) and Tony Blair, just to mention a few.
Unlike the amateurs who were at some point arrested and even executed, it's impossible to count how many people they killed.
The fact that they delegated the task to others makes little difference...

Yes it is true that Rudolph Hoss mostly did not have any remorse or regret for his horrible actions at Auschwitz. However he did show remorse albeit only for Polish people. While in prison awaiting trial and execution for his crimes he was guarded by Polish guards who actually treated him kindly despite all of the horrible things that he had done to over a million innocent people including thousands of fellow Polish people which reportedly made him realize how wrong his actions towards them were and made him regret what he had done to them. Shortly before his death he acknowledged the horrible things that he had done and asked for forgiveness from the Polish people. However you are mostly correct as Rudolph Hoss showed no remorse or regret for what he had done to other people at Auschwitz including Jewish people, Roma people, and other people who were killed there and only showed remorse for how he had treated Polish people.

I am so glad America will soon be majority native Hispanic/Latino Amerindian again and hopefully they can reclaim their banking systems back for their people. I wonder if India won't be racist towards them and start targeting them? India is really racist towards foreign and especially Europeans so I highly doubt it but yet it is pushed/forced on Hungarians for some weird strange unfair reason..I wish natives would wake up! Time to reclaim what is rightfully yours and not have to made to feel a false sense of guilt over it. People have a natural RIGHT to be left alone, to strive for self determination and preservation amongst their own and fight for their own native country. No matter what others say.

Strange that after all this time the majority of comments on here, re this heart-rending film... are all concerned with national pride or victimisation... the past will never be again. However, the way the Western world is heading right now, I can foresee similar events happening again.
The IMPORTANT message to take from this story is that WE ARE ALL RELATED... whether that fits into your 'belief system' or not, it IS a FACT of life!
Surely it is a far nobler thing to focus on a BETTER World for future generations, than continue doing the same old routine of 'they must be different' attitude to life... IT MUST HAVE OCCURRED TO SOME OF YOU... THAT IT JUST DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE!
And yet people the world over still believe that if they vote, things will change... haven't we been banging our heads on the proverbial brick wall for way too long?
"Doing the same thing over and over again; expecting different results, is the definition of INSANITY!" paraphrased quote from Einstein.

This was a sad time for mankind indeed. It seems as though that society has forgotten the 10,000's of women that were forced to work in the brothels of different countries. Many were killed and most were Jewish. When found out they were damned by the their own people, their heads shaved, beaten and drug out into the streets and often hung or worse tortured by their own. Self preservation is built into us all. How many of you reading this would have chosen death or life even if were for a few years or days? History seems to forget they were FORCED to work there or the death camps. Their records remain sealed and still exist and history ignores them. These women deserve as much recognition as the others do.

The Nazis slaughtered all sorts of people; Jews, Romani, Sinti, Poles, Soviet POWs, homosexuals, communists, socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Czechs who had resisted occupation, Byelorussians, French persons who had resisted occupation, etc etc. Unfortunately the way the Holocaust is taught in the US really doesn't give a full scope of the persecution and genocidal nature of the Nazi regime because the Jewish experience takes center stage over everything else. While it is important to understand the history anti-Semitism in regards to European history, as well as the Nazi desire to wipe Jewry out of Europe, it really over shadows how they also had a desire to exterminate other smaller minorities of "undesirables" and anyone from any nationality who politically opposed their ideology, including fellow Germans.

There needs to be more movies about WWII victims that are not Jewish. There also needs to be far more movies on the bloody reign of Stalin as he killed far, far more people than Hitler. In no way is my comment meant to condone (support) Hitler or to say the Jewish story isn't important, but the fact remains Stalin killed far more and few people know this and the media has purposely ignored the other affected groups like the Roma. We even need to remember the hundreds of thousands of German girls and women who were raped and murdered by Russian soldiers.
