I wish more pianists would program Medtner in their recitals! His music is thoroughly romantic and full of pathos mirroring his own tortured personal life! Good job, Mr. Beus!
Stephen's father was my Mission President when I served as a missionary in Moscow, Russia from 2006-2008. In 2006 or 2007, I forget which, he came to Moscow and put on a wonderful performance that I was able to attend. He's simply incredible.
Great that this got uploaded. I first heard him play this at the Cliburn screening recital in 2009 in NY and was blown away. In this performance, there is such a direct link between him and the music: there is so much invested in every note, with from an inseparable bond with the music. I particularly appreciate the clarity in the coda, bringing light into the dense complex writing so typical of Medtner. I performed Op.38 at several recitals this year, including at the Berliner Philharmonie this year. Op.39 is my next project, and hope to have do all-Medtner recitals in 2018... perhaps with Sonata-Ballada Op.27. Thanks for the inspiration.
Okay I’ve listened to most available recordings of this piece and by far this made the most sense and was the most lyrical. Bravo brotha. Amazing performance!
Playing this piece for an upcoming recital. An incredible interpretation, one which has many nuances and beautiful voicing. Really an inspired performance, bravo!!
Wow! I enjoyed that a lot! I'm struggling-on trying to play this sonata myself 😁 I'm going to take my cue from Medtner's own recording of this work and emphasize the lyrical rather than the velocity as I don't think I'll ever play it with Beus' speed 😁

The greatest Sonata Tragica performance I've heard. So thrilling!

Consapevolezza armonica e fraseggio chiaro. Bravissimo. Finalmente una grande interpretazione
I remember this brilliant pianist from the van Cliburn competition. The Medtner sounds beautiful filled with feeling and poetry.
This is absolutely magnificent playing, Stephen!
This piece was new to me
The playing is immaculate, commanding, passionate and impressive. Can't imagine it better played.
Demidenko does an equally phenomenonal job - his playing of this piece is just off the charts.
It is amazing to hear magic like this that few people tap into or are aware of. (including me) Bravo Stephen Beus!!!!

The New York Steinway sounds heavenly
Maybe the best interpretation ever!
Beautiful performance!
Beautiful. A deep connection unhampered by technical limitations.
bravo!
