When he could see I wasn’t taking his harshness, put downs and bossiness anymore, he changed. He could be hiding his inner thoughts, but it’s been almost a year and things are good. Family is the first to recognise as the player using these tools. Guilt tripping, pity play, betrayal under the guise of family needs and lack of respect as people but rather their crutch. It’s better to learn it late than not at all. Thank you for the spotlight on stoicism. Very valuable

@thestoiccommunity Philosophy itself helps me but stoicism is perfect for my position in life. I live back with family at 28 and can't afford my own place alone right now. It helps me tackle my problems the right way and put what I can't do currently out of my mind. Focusing on what I CAN do has been far more beneficial to me than whining about what I can't. Obviously if I don't like what my family lives like then I am not legally obligated to live there and so I mustn't let emotions get to me. Calm heads always prevail and Stoicism has changed my mindset with just the simple concept of what a "Dichotomy of Control" is. Things have finally been looking up as well and i haven't lost my mind or myself doing it.

I'd had a wonderful afternoon with a stranger while out on a dog walk. I was relating it to an older woman whom I befriended. I mentioned something I'd done at the time which gave me joy, and was surprised at her response to such an uplifting afternoon for me. She shrieked down the phone 'THAT'S NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!!'. I was shocked. Indeed it wasn't my responsibility... it was my pleasure. She obviously felt threatened I'd found pleasure in someone that wasn't her!!.... and was trying to manipulate me by having a hissy fit to make sure I didn't do it again and burst my bubble of joy. Jealous? It's amazing how people give themselves away.... on both sides. xxx

I'm saving this to come back to again and again. I never knew there was a name to what I feel I've always been, a stoic. Forty years ago, I got out of a very abusive ten-year marriage. This one pod here I feel will help reinforce courage I still need encountering my Ex who still verbally abusive to me in the presence of our 40+ sons. It's been two years since my grandson's high school graduation, the last time I saw my Ex when he slung a brutal criticism at me out of the blue and our youngest son caught it, flung it right back, defended me, and told him how unjustifiably cruel he was being. Oh, did my heart sing that day! This was the same son who, a few years earlier, ended joint Christmases with his father who would change plans at the last minute without regard for anyone else's schedule-juggling to make the initial date he wanted to get together in the first place. Small victories... 50 years' worth. So, thank you for being here. I appreciate very much that I found you. ❤🎉 ❤

I like that point about focusing on what's in your control . I feel like a lot of the time people get too caught up worrying about things they can't do anything about . It can feel so empowering when you focus on what you can do and ultimately change your situation for the better.
The only thing that comes from focusing on what you can't control is defeat .

exactly.....when i think about the harm certain people in my family could do if i were more involved with them chills my blood and makes me wonder if i could even apply these principles.
There truly is only one solution, and that's to maintain distance; but i'm scared because i know at some point I"ll have to interact with them more.
In the meantime i'll just watch more stoic videos, educate myself and work on a plan.

I had lapsed into second guessing myself about a recent relationship that I finally left for the third time. The man in question was emotionally neglectful, and despite my efforts to discuss the issue, he carried on regardless and expected that because he said he didn't know how to reciprocate, that made it acceptable. It was clear that he would accept any women who was prepared to cheerfully meet his daily needs, and that he was entitled to such self sacrificing. I've been wondering if I abandoned him, let him down. Thank you for this video... It's valuable confirmation that I have done the right thing.
