I've been waiting for this video! Thanks for sharing your process (love the effect of the calligraphy pen), and you're right about watercolors making a great gift. I sent out watercolor postcards on my PCT thru last year and they spread a lot of joy, and they were fun to make.

Great vid. I dabble a bit with WCs too and i find it really improves my observational skills. I find i look at things in much more detail with a view to painting them. Good work!

Good video and demo, what you talked about during the demo reminds us all to have fun and relax and that it's not about perfectionism. The whole video had a soothing effect on me. Sometimes I put so much pressure on myself about my art and this created a relief to that mental state. Thanks!

Right, I'm sold! Gonna go on Amazon and buy myself some paints to got with my little notebook. Particularly love the caligraphy brush, might genuinely replace my pen with one. Cant wait to start giving gifts :D
The brush pens are so much fun! And there are many cool ones out there, I've found with the one in this video it lasts a long time without the bristles getting messed up unlike micron brush pens where they die long before they run out of ink. The one in the video you could also refill pretty easily if you so wanted

I'm an avid hiker and have watched your videos for years and thought "Maybe jupiter's on to something here". And now here you are a day later with advice on what I should've bought yesterday hahahaha.
Haha I'm sorry, maybe a little late on the draw. I'm glad you're giving it a shot! Another RUclipsr I highly recommend is Peter Draws, he teaches the art of mindless doodling. You may like it. Less so much watercolor but provides a great mindset for making art
I suggest Tick Twister in two sizes: big ticks and little ticks. By easing the slot around the tick, twirl between two fingers -nd the mouth parts on the tick retract so it cleanly comes out. If you squeeze or pull, it can leave infected mouth parts or juices inside. If I had a tick, I would not put iff getting treatment right away. Lyme’s disease is very bad. I avoid ticks, by avojding overhangjng brush or overhanging branches. I wear bicycling tights with snug ankles or zippers at the ankles. In addition, I wear shorty stretch gaiters: many people like Dirty Girl Gaiters. I have Salomon. It is helpful to wear light colors. Chiggers? Maybe hammock camping? Mosquitos? I have good experience using the dragonfly or bat noise apps for my phone: dragonflys and bats eat mosquitos if I am not concerned about the battery life. I also have a Bug Baffler headnet I wear over my hat, a Bug Bivy, and lightweight gloves. I do not use toxic chemicals.
I had no idea you drew and painted. That's kind of my jam, me and my girlfriend bring our paints and head up into the mountains (North Cascades) and just enjoy the summer and paint. If you ever want to try something new to add to your kit, fountain pens are a lot of fun, you can try out different inks, some are waterproof, but some are not and they bleed when you hit them with water which can be a lot of fun. Also, if you haven't seen his work yet I would recommend checking out James Gurney's youtube channel. He is an outstanding plein air painter. I consider him our Bob Ross of today (Just not as well known, but super chill) Awesome man, keep it up, keep painting. Do you have someplace you show your art, like instagram? Would be cool to see.

Love this video, always slightly confused with people’s gear list videos, that they never seem to include anything to keep themselves entertained other than their phone, when I’m out backpacking always have either my paints or some knitting with me.

Have you heard of/have an opinion of the brand Expeditionary Art - art toolkit ? They make ultra light and compact watercolor trays. I'm highly considering buying one to take with my on the A.T
I often don't and just let them mesh, sometimes I'll squeeze some water out and wipe the brush against the inside of the pallet though and that gets it clean enough
I'm not sure if you're still vegan or not, but some of the colours in that palette use animal products. I was looking at that set too and that turned me off of it. :( However, the Daniel Smith brand of paints are completely vegan if you ever want to have a non-Winsor-Newton option! Just fill the empty pans with tube paint and let them dry, easy peasy.
What are you storing it it? I have my own kit, but struggling with what to carry/organize it in. I'd like to drop the weight of my current carrying case, but it's waterproof.
I just use a quart size Ziploc and either carry a small enough sketchbook or cut/rip paper to that size. It's not perfectly protected but I think it adds to it that it was out there with you

I used the original colors until they used up then replaced them one by one as needed. Most are still the original!

Surprised that you have left the inserts for each of the paints. I simply removed each from the little plastic container, reducing some weight.
When I took them out of the half pan containers, I noticed that they fit sideways. This showed me how much extra space was being wasted
