One of the best openings of any film. Paints NYC as such a grisly, lonely place.
You have really good taste!
bingo
Absolutely. Those two minutes are really unsettling. The combination of the initial piano chords over the Paramount logo, and then the New York establishing shot ending over that gothic fortress that the Dakota Apartments are, all underscored by one of the best themes ever. That lullaby is at the same time spooky and strangely tender. It's so engraved in my subconscious that I sometimes have dreams where I wander through some emty corridors, and I know it's the Dakota.
The whole movie is a total masterpiece , of course. I must have seen it 50 times, and its psychological effect is so well established that I find myself needing to look away from the screen sometimes...just in case, if you know what I mean. Polansky is a genius, and he was a genius in 1967.
Agreed.
Alexis M I agree
- "Are you a doctor?"
- "Yes."
- "He's an actor."
I love how it all starts with a lie.
+Thomas X. ... and I like that one chimney is smoking ... in this film every detail is perfect ...
YEAH!!! Very true, I often wondered if Guy knew all along about the satanist in this apartment building. Also the Dakota is a grand old building I would love to live there
@@marciloni12 You'd really want Yoko Ono as a neighbor???
If you're a millionaire you've got a chance.
@@TheIndependentLens Now THAT’s scary
This is easily one of the very best pictures of the last 50 years. A masterpiece in every aspect.
Alexandros Deligiorgis is really is a masterpiece like The Exorcist
Both great, this one even bigger
*54 years (almost)
Yes!💙
I cannot believe half a century has gone since the creation of this masterwork.
New- York en 1968...
This was my first real impression of seeing New York on film. Roman Polanski did a good job of casting NY as a giant and alienating place.
Comment of the video award.
StoneyX213 yeah but this movie is cool
but he is a genius ... sorry ...
#classicmovies
To me, this is the scariest horror movie that was ever made. Betrayal not only by your spouse, but my an entire covet of co-conspirators. Scariest song ever, as well.
IKR, Hutch was her only hope in being saved.
It really is. On a psychological level. The cinematography, music, suspense, realism lulls you into a false state.
In my opinion this movie was not scary at all. Like it was just down right wired. Like it was good but not scary. There is a few moments that are scary but not enough for me to stop watching it or cover my eyes.
lmao old man
This and the exorcist
Never get tired of this classic. Mia carried so much on her shoulders and was amazing. Such a crush on the masterful John Cassavetes too. Those days of course were prolific and worry free for Roman.
This movie never gets old. Music is pretty creepy in the beginning
nostalgia ultra True! The opening music is so beautiful you would never expect anything horrifying to happen.
It gives me chills every time I hear it,
“Are you a doctor?”
“Yes.”
“He’s an actor.”
Not only shows from the very beginning that Guy is a liar but metaphorically illustrates that he’s going to pretend he’s taking care of rosemary during her pregnancy telling her what she needs to do, what to take, and who to see, when really it’s all an act.
Guy wanted the apartment :-)
Yep he really sold his soul to the devil
@@SoulFireCandlesNYChe gave up his wife and first born son, not his soul. The whole movies and allegory anyway
No just shows he is a funny guy
In the beginning you think, “That’s nice, a mother singing her baby a lullaby.”
When you hear this at the end again you think, “Oh God, a mother singing her baby a lullaby!”
The best horror movie ever.
I love that this song plays in 2 different tones. At the beginning, it sounds happy and soothing, and at the end, it sounds dark and depressing. It brilliantly captures how a mother starts out and how things turn out in the end. I wouldn't go into spoilers, but sometimes the parents do not get that happy ending they were working hard to get, or mother in this case.
Brilliant and frightening film.
Brilliant how a sweet and simple song can be turned in a horror theme by the instrumentation. How pink letters can become messengers of pure evil.
Komenda
My mother always used to sing me to sleep with this song when I was little. And when I'm listening to the real song now, it sounds like my mother actually SANG the song for "Rosemary's Baby"!
wasn't it creepy ?
my favorite movie of all time , a true masterpiece
💙💙💙
Can't believe I only just watched it for the first time, absolutely incredible movie
💙💙💙
Those opening chimes let you know exactly what a twisted treat we are in for
This film is flawless!
Yes it is. I found part 2. It's 100% horrible. I had no idea there even was a part 2. It was a made for TV movie and bad. I think I found it on youtube a few months ago.
looknowtv
I think you are referring to Agnieszka Holland's version with Zoe Saldana starring as Rosemary. I haven't watched it, and not intending to :-)
it is. it's unsettling and affecting, but brilliant.
Actually, that's called a 'sequel'. But I agree. The sequel is BAD - intolerably bad and boring. Apparently, they spent so much buying the rights, there was no money left over for a decent screenplay - or a decent ANYTHING.
@@looknowtv yes! A terrible movie
I just came out of Prince Charles cinema in London they were running a classic horror movie marathon including this movie.
What a truly gem
That reminds me, I gotta bring my pregnant neighbor some tannis root drink I've made for her.
OMG NOOOOOOOO
Wouldn't it be wonderful if there really WERE SUCH A THING? We'd have pots of Tannis growing, just to horrify people.
Tanis anyone?
No wait she says it like this: "preganant"!!
Only if you have chocolate mouse too bruh
Hypnotically New York. It,'s like
walking into a surreal, real story at the same time. Thank you, Ira Levin.
Debra Tate, my dear friend, I always think of your beautiful sister, Sharon every time I see this or the movie, because her and Roman were just beginning their life together... So long ago, but still current in our hearts😓❤️❤️❤️
Long live Charlie
This is probably one of my all time favorite films.
A perfect film. That lullaby was a stroke of genius.
Best Polanski movie in my book. Wonderful actors!!!!
All ages!
Polanski mastermind - the beginning is hypnotic for me ...
Scariest picture l ever saw but sadly it has been cut to pieces now.Saw it first in Zambia in the 60s frightened me to death then!!!
Greatest film ever made.
A clock work orange

Brilliant film. Beautiful lullaby!♥️
One of the most creepy and beautiful intro in cinema history is a lonely, wide and scary new york at the same time is comforting and timeless
It comforts me yet makes me so uneasy
I am currently pregnant and am freaked out a bit by this movie, but I still love it
Are not you a Slav? Do not be afraid. This melody represents the boundless love.
Then please put your middle finger down and be a good example to your child. Thanks ^_^
Stop watching movies like this if your preggo, watch Eddie Murphy Daddy Day Care for Gods sake
I got some tannis root just in case you need it...
for some reason this song came into my head all day today.
If you sing this the whole day around your loved ones, they get aggressive... Try it out.
You know my sons school they don’t use a Bull when they have recess they have a Theme like this one and I hate it mmm I alwasy thought it was brainwashing !
Imagination is a scary thing to have.
Imagine if they had Ruth Gordon singing instead for opening credits 😂
🤣🤣🤣
God I love this movie so much
can you say why ? :-)
@@MrSebboxxx because its a cult classic horror/drama and brilliantly made film that's why.
@The Starman ... the film is a masterpiece because it shows the contradictory nature of human being ... in a very originel way ...
The film is just so grounded it’s own time period it almost feels like a time capsule into the second half of the 60s. It truly shows how psychological horror can be the most frightening thing on this earth, and at the same time has a wonderful overarching message it conveys at the end.
@@baysidegreg "The film is just so grounded it’s own time period it almost feels like a time capsule into the second half of the 60s."
I thought exactly the same.
This has got to be the creepiest open title sequence in film history.
my favorite horror film. i've only seen it like three or four times but the point still stands
So creepy seeing the entrance when poor John Lennon was shot
yeah and Dear Prudence is about Mia's sister...
I didn't know that thanks for the info
Happy to be of service.
I don't believe in coincidences. Nearby, on the other side of Central Park, is where Heath Ledger died. The area is CURSED...
Yes, in Lower Manhattan, not that close to Central Park. The Dakota is on The Upper West Side, miles away. Not much of a coincidence, unless... Are you saying the whole Island is cursed? Stranger still, try to figure out why River Phoenix doesn't have a star on the Walk of Fame yet James Dean does. Not many theories out there if you can come up with one yourself but I have one if you're interested. I expect Ledger will get one by 2018 but Phoenix never will.
One of the greatest American films ever produced.
This song is ,,,,,,,,,,,FREAKY AMAIZINGGGGGG . A MASTER PIACE !,,,,,,,
A.k.a. Masterpiece?
One of the best pieces of music intro for a classic movie! One bit of history regarding this movie. When Mia Farrow cut her hair during the shooting of the movie Roman Polanski was furious!! with her!!
As it turned out, that pixie haircut just added to the creep factor of the film lol
The haircut was written in the book
This piece was used very evocatively in Alexander Mcqueen's Savage Beauty exhibition at the V and A. Truly haunting.
Yes!!! RiP
- I love New York so much.
It’s how realistic and “normal “ what makes that movie scary. I believe.
Like her entire pregnancy was normal according to the satanists 🤣
What a masterpiece, both movie and song.
Recuerdo que en mi primera visita a New York, el primer lugar que quise ver fue el edificio Dakota... Increíblemente maravilloso, estaba en reparación pero disfruté muchísimo poder estar allí.. Recuerdo cada momento de ese recorrido...
The building is a character in the movie.
How can a song be so beautiful and so scary at the same time?
Anybody else find this song wildly romantic ?
Maybe..
I heard people's memories of the filming period. Apparently Krzysztof Komeda secretly in love with Mia Farrow.
I know that this movie isn't exactly suitable for little children, but I used to sing along with this song when I was 7-8 years old. I liked it very much back then (and still do)
... it is a deceptive romantic thing ... lurking behind the unspeakable ...
YEP!!!! GORGEOUS LULLABY. AND ROMANTIC😊😊 PERFECT FOR SUSAN
O R ANDY!!😊
Truly a masterpiece. A chilling and distinguished film.
I worked as a package delivery boy in the early 80s and got a call to deliver a letter to Lauren Bacall at the Dakota, filled with anticipation to be dashed, one of the doormen quickly grabbed it from me as I entered the front gate shown here. I very distinctly remember the fountain.
Christopher Kormoda died in 1968 he was Polanski's friend from Poland who wrote that music Polanski seemed to have bad luck follow him around !
I really like rosemary's baby it is my favorite movie. especially the what have you done with it scene
I LOVE THIS MOVIE.....
the Dakota is an infamous building with many buried scsndsls
This song is the scariest in the world!
From a time when they knew how to do horror movies...
What a beautiful theme!!!! Is a lullaby!😊
+Thomas X. Yes, and also the color of the titles is pink rather than blue indicating the birth of a girl, another deception.
Why would anybody want to watch this opening sequence? It’s basically torture listening to Mia Farrow sing
Abc xyz I think it’s beautiful singing that sets the grim tone of this movie. And it ties to the ending in such a fantastic way you know Polanski made the choice to intentional include this.
May have been intentional but it’s merely because it’s Mia Farrow. I find her voice fairly annoying.
Abc xyz I love her voice and this movie. It’s in my top ten and it’s a perfect 10/10 from me. It’s number four in my lodge behind pulp fiction eternal sunshine and clock work orange
The 1998 needs to be corrected in the title........It's 1968 !
Thanks for posting !
The Mastermind behind the song, Christopher Komeda had such an untimely and horrible death soon after this movie.
Another creepy coincidence tied to this movie
He has his fathers eyes!
This movie scared the hell out of me when i first watched it
So beautiful and so haunted one of my favorite
Timeless masterpiece
Questo è un film diretto con maestria da Roman Polanski un thriller gotico moderno FANTASTICO
that's the place John Lennon was killed at the end of the scene ....its the Dakota building....
Coincidence? I think not. Creepy.
maybe he talk too much?
John Lennon R.I.P
It'sa magical movie. The script and the performances are top notch; I never tire watching .😊
THE NEW UPDATE TV MOVIE VERSION OF THIS MOVIE CLASSIC ,SOME TIME BACK ON "NBC" ,WAS VERY INTERESTING BUT COULD NOT EVER OUT DO THE 60'S ORIGINAL. THIS ORIGINAL THEME IS LOVINGLY FEMININE &, SWEET FOR THIS NEW YORK CITY MADE MOVIE &, DEAR MS.MIA WHO LIVES HERE IN N.Y.C. THE 60'S GIRLY FASHIONS ARE SO GREAT 💗💗💗💗💗.
that's mia farrow singing
1:57 - the exact location where John Lennon was shot dead.
What have you done to it's eyes!!!
You Maniacs!!!
I remember. I saw this film, again, again and again. And so after a short time after that I lost my first child. Of course sometimes I wonder . . .
Funny you mentioned this. The wife watched it alone for the very first time right after she gave birth. She just 'felt' like watching this movie.
Breathtaking movie
One of the scariest theme ever created
Beautiful music of Krzysztof Komeda
One of the greatest horror films ever made!
You know back then when it was 2008 I heard that a different director was going to do a remake of this movie and to be released but they never done it, and it was going to be produced by Michael Bay.

Rosemarys Baby. was filmed at the dakota
Roman Polanski fa un film che è rimasto nella memoria di chi la visto per la sua tensione è rappresenta una svolta nel cinema horror ricordiamoci siamo ancora nel 1968
so schön ! Eigentlich für Spieluhren
Could have moved into literally any of those other apartment buildings in the panning shot.
Un générique vraiment glaçant
Love this😃
This music at the very beginning sounds like the opening to a Friday The 13th film. When the Paramount logo shows.
It's such a sense of foreboding before it's time. Good tie in with Friday The 13th since it's the same studio that released it!!!!👍👍👍👍👍
where can I see the full movie?
Can you believe opening scene corridor to the apartments with attentive Doorman , John Lennon was shot and killed 10 years later, how ironic
12 years Lata this was out 1968
Nobody can top Minnie!
And she won Best Supporting Actress Oscar that year!!😊

mis padres no me dejaban verla cuando la daban por tv. al final la vi en una reposicion en un viejo cine.
Did a book report in college on this movie in 2010. Fuck this movie. Completely changed my way of thinking of life.
