I thought this was excellent! I saw the original way back in the 70's when I was a teen. I happened to re-watch it last year randomly. If you don't appreciate the first movie then you might not get this one. Great recap!
It's a missed opportunity. The story was a paint by numbers and was not scary, or even creepy. They had a chance to add on to the lore of the first movie, by exploring the motivation of a person who joins a cult. The characters come off one dimensional, because they played it safe.
@oscartheamericanoutlaw4572 what are you talking about? it is a HORROR movie, it has been known as a horror movie for decades, and the scary feeling is what you suppose to get from a horror movie.
Thanks for the re-cap. I do think men need to be thoughtful when reviewing commentary on women's reactions to sexual violence and reproductive coercion. I wasn't a fan of the "Bill Cosbied" comment. Sexual violence is common and nuanced and I think the actress did a great job portraying that--after the assault she was confused, and violated, but probably didn't think she had the right to be upset because women are taught our bodies are not our own.
There was a sequel to Rosemary's Baby in the 70's, she does indeed raise her son, and tries to make him good. *Edit: It's called "Look what's happened to Rosemary's baby". I think there was a book too, but I can't remember the title.
It is sad that young woman have to be so careful in these days, I know things have not change much from the 70's & 80's but now a days with it being very easy to find out a lot of info on anyone online, that makes it really scary. Couple rules I have told my kids: Never leave your drink or food unattended, never take a drink or food from someone you do not know, and please for the love of god do NOT get into anyone's car that you do not know.
It’s actually safer today. Back when I grew up we were trained to think of all grownups as safe. And children were never believed when they reported bad grownups. If anything, your parents would punish you for “lying about that priest or uncle”. Also people did not understand basic psychology. They would assume that because you did not fight your assailant to the point of him almost killing you, you must have wanted it. And finally, we did not know the mind tricks and the drugs these people use. The only reason statistics seemed lower is because victims carried their assault as a secret.
Jeez . No wonder everyone is on anxiety medication. Yes bad people out there but don’t limit your life. Be careful but don’t think everyone is bad. Kind your crew and stick with them .
The biggest positive I can give is the acting from Kevin McNally and Dianne Wiest. I like Dianne and it was nice to see her play a villain for change; she scared the absolute hell out of me in the haircut scene! Kevin McNally it was cool to see him again and I thought he did a great job. Julia Garner did fine but I think the script was what failed. There was a lot of inconsistences with the plot, like they didn't have Rosemary and Terry meeting or talking. Also the dumb poor man's rendition of the Rosemary's Baby lullaby in the ending.. what the hell?!?
rosemary and terry actually met in the movie. after terry saw a baby in the washing machine in the laundry room, we can actually see rosemary enter the laundry room too through the elevators. she has the same blonde pigtails she had from the original rosemarys baby. although it was just a brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene, i think that it's actually enough to subtly show that their characters had a connection. the prequel's focus is on terry, after all.
Very nice analogies and explanations!!! I saw rosemary’s baby when i was very young but i didn’t really remember the plot… I knew these two were connected. I love Ozark the lead actress in this movie is also a lead actress in Ozark!! She is extremely talented!

I enjoyed the film and felt it deserved a higher rating than the current 5.8 score on imdb. I gave it a 7. I watched it for a couple of reasons; one I thought the org film was pretty good for its time and I'm a fan of Julia Garner as I loved her performance as Ruth in Ozark.
I have a question about the Laundry room scene. It was particularly confusing to me, because the woman who stumbles upon Terry while doing her laundry looks a lot like Rosemary, but unlike in the first movie, where Terry and Rosemary stop and talk, this interaction doesn’t happen at all. If the woman is supposed to be Rosemary, it would disrupt the events of the original story, since Rosemary moves into the apartment after Mrs. Gardenia dies, but in the prequel, she’s still alive during these events. (?) Was this like a mistake they didn’t notice?
I hated how that didn’t connect to the original. They should’ve left it out completely especially since they weren’t going to interact anyways. I kinda wanted them to make it more seamless and connect that scene with the original but it wouldn’t have worked out for the details already mentioned. Also in the original Terry was still very much happy and saying good things about the Castevets until almost right before her demise. In this version Terry was already weary of them and in a complete state of fear and paranoia well before her death.
Yes!! Exactly! No one else seems to have caught that and that's when it went downhill..that messed the whole timeline up. Showing Rosemary and her husband speaking with the police officer at the end would have been enough
@@S.-cm6qc Yesss. I tried to overlook the costume choices in the scene, even though I think they were different from the first movie, but the sequence of events was just a HUGE mistake, mainly because, from a logical point of view, it doesn’t make sense. @@jtexas4629And the all outfit for castevet and Terry or Rosemary Very different in this movie 😅 and the ending, Terry fall in the apartment all people invite the party, but later, castevet going outside and find Terry body in the road😂
Terry's character in Rosemary's baby doesn't line up at all with Apartment 7a Terry!! They're totally different characters. I was shocked how the writers literally ignored or rewrote Terry. She wasn't even a dancer in the original. She would have definitely mentioned it in her conversation with Mia Farrow! Rewatch that scene and you'll see immediately. Unbelievable! Very poor writing
@@tfd92this is how I felt, by the time she met up with rosemary in the laundry room (in this version) she already seemed on to them, no way would she praise them the way she did to rosemary
You are right. They are totally different characters. **[SPOILER ALERT] **** Terry dies in Apartment 7A. Mia Farrow's character in Rosemary's baby is another young woman that the old satanic couple successfully get their hooks into, AFTER Terry's death.
I think the diamond demon was supposed to be an accurate representation of Lucifer. From what I remember lucifer before he was cast down was Gods most decorated angel, he was fully encrusted in diamonds, jewels, minerals etc.
Beautiful looking film and very stylish. Not much of a thriller, though. Not a horror. Nice recap and cool to hear the connections to Rosemary's Baby. I always thought that movie was a prequel to the Omen when I was a kid.
I was confused because in this movie we see Rosemary and Terry in the laundry before Ms Gardinia gets taken to the hospital... if rosemary is already living in the building- whose apartment is she in? she's suppose to be living in ms gardenias apartment...
Great movie. It's really about the dark underside of the show biz and entertainment industry, the way the gatekeepers exploit young women for their bodies by promising them fame and stardom.
I think her dance works as both a self distraction and a distraction to the cult. She said before that dancing helped her forget all her problems so she knew that if she purposely tried to kill herself or hurt the baby in a conscious act that the baby would stop her, but if it was something that was spontaneous then clearly it could be done.
Enjoyed it but was surprised by the need to imply the Woodhouses are in the building earlier than it seemed it should be. Was the original established as taking place in 1965? That threw me too. Wished they'd worked the blackout into it.

I was disappointed. The musical theatre elements didn’t work. And why would they give her the lead in a huge Broadway show knowing she was pregnant and would have to drop out at some point? Not a single scary moment. The nun scene was stupid and cliche. Also- Rosemary moved into Mrs. Gardenia’s apartment in the original story. So why do we see a Rosemary lookalike in the laundry room before Mrs. Gardenia died? She wouldn’t have been there at that point. Lead actress was nothing like the original Terry and the first Terry expressed her gratitude and fondness for the Castevets. This Terry never seemed to like or trust them. The movie had virtually no humor or quirky characters as in the original. The actors playing the Castevets were good but bound by the interpretations of the original actors.
