A good example to compare is Canada, both trains and airlines have some competitions, trains of different companies can runon the same tracks they rent from the track owners. There are also heavy and bulky cargo that will not be suitable by air. Take a trip from Toronto to Vancouver. An airplane will take maybe 5 hours, and since it is classified as domestic, you be lucky to get a pack of peanuts and a coffee, and they charge you for alcohol. In a train, the same trip will take 4,5 days, during that time, the railways will have to feed you three times a day plus drinks and even provide a bed for you to sleep and a washroom. All that require extra staff. So rail travel will cost more than airplanes.

A truly awful contribution. Talking about this subject without mentioning High Speed Trains (and sleepers with 0-time wasted) is truly heroic. Not differentiating between major countries, dito. Most flights are domestic. The time comparison, door to door, often favours trains. London-Paris 2 1/2 hours, flight one hour - + 2x1 hour trip to and from airports, long walks in airports, arrival 2 hours min ahead. Price for train from 50 dollars with early booking. A no-brainer. All in all, a major piece of disinformation.

True, but in this brave new world that list piece of information is the truest.

It should be added that airlines can offer low-cost tickets only because they enjoy subsidies and preferential taxes, so the savings of the individual user fall on the shoulders of the entire community

Why doesn't this same theory apply in the USA?
