I have the same Generac generator in my RV. It runs but after a bout 2 minutes dies. I found that if I KEEP THE PRIME SWITCH ON - it seems to run fine and is generating 110v. So my question is does this mean my pump is failing? does the prime switch drive the pump and then when you release the rocket switch the pump stops? I would think the fuel pump should keep running when in use. So what does the act of priming do? Main question - would you think the fuel pump is failing and only supplies sufficient fuel when the prime switch is left on. Is this bad for the genie? Thanks
Hi Selig, fuel pumps are relatively inexpensive so I would replace the fuel pump and see what happens. However, I would check the air intact filters, especially the first cleanable one and make sure you're getting enough air to fuel ratio. if both of those don't solve the problem, the circuit board or connection to it that controls the fuel pump is most likely the cause of the issue. Remember to change the fuel filter when replacing the pump. You could also change the fuel filter first. Good luck.
@@PaulSmithers thanks, Paul. I’ve ordered a new fuel pump & filter. Air filter is clean. Can you tell me should fuel pump run all time when running generator (seems logical to pump fuel). What does prime do? Sounds like fuel pump clicks when that’s on. Can you explain why generator runs fine if I keep prim on. Is it forcing the pump to work? Thanks for your help.
@@seligleyser1485 I thought I replied to this. There is a pre-screen before the paper air filter. It’s critical it is cleaned often. Use gas and do a couple rinses and let air dry for a bit. The prime pump does activate the pump continuously and I would not recommend using that to keep it running…
@@PaulSmithers Hi Paul: I replaced fuel pump and filter. NO change. When I PRIME carb, I hear pump running (as with old one) and I presume it is sending fuel to carb. Runs for 1-2 minutes then quits. I presume it runs while there is fuel in the carb bowl. If I prime every 1-2 minutes for 3 secs it will continue to run. So, as long as fuel pump is running, genie runs. Can fuel pass through fuel pump if it is not running or put another way should the fuel pump run continuously and if yes what makes it run if it is not on PRIME? Does PRIME switch also open a choke? BTW I can't start from the cab as no prime there. For completeness, I have plenty gas, disconnecting oil & temp sensors does not remedy symptom. Is there something electronically that should keep the fuel pump running other than the Prime switch? Thanks
@@seligleyser1485 the answer is yes. The fuel pump is set to delier just the right volume of gas. See if you can test the lead to the fuel pump without the prime switch on if you can have it run long enough. It should be hot all the time! if not, trace the wire back to board and start from there. Good luck!
I’m in Baker now, can we talk about the generator I have the same. I want to know where you bought your fuel pump I’m Barstow. Anyhow like to talk with you, I’m from eastern canada
Baker? I no longer have this RV and generator. Perhaps look at the questions and replies. I bought the fuel pump at Auto Zone. Took the old one in and matched flow rate to an generic pump which worked fine. But the air filter "screen" is super important and must be cleaned a lot! Good luck
I would find the troubleshooting guide for that model. It really makes it easy to find out which part is not functioning. Could be as easy as a circuit breaker which is an easy fix or brushes gone bad, a real pain but not expensive…good luck!
You are correct! Must have been a Senior Moment!!! It's a Generac!!!!! Thanks to both of you for catching that!. Also had another issue with it stopping. It was the third wire down on the voltage regulator with two wires attached. Crimped connection and wha lah!
I have a Generac N P 66 G motorhome generaor. The model # is 096C0-3 serial # is 3175394 , when I prime the pump and start the engine, it will run only for a short time. It appears the fuel pump does not keep running after the engine starts . I have changed the Pump primer switch with no change. Help
You have to keep a certain amount of fuel in the gas tank I believe it's over 1/4 tank in order for the generator to run. The gas tank in the RV that is.
My GENERAC is a GN480 also but yours is Q55 G. Mine is a Q-40 G would the same fuel pump work as you used. I have the manual but it doesn't give specifications. How did you determine the right one for you??
I went to AutoZone and they looked up my generators fuel pump Specs and then we matched it with a shelf brand. Worked great! My old pump had some flow numbers too so that helped... 🤞
Im having trouble with my miller bobcat 250 welder with the onan engine. It' dies 15 seconds into your weld. But could run all day in low idle. It's just when you start welding whenever it dies
I just bought a 93 gulfstream conquest with this same generator. Hope it is a goof one only had onans until this one before. Will have new learning curve on it. Do you think they are good dependable.
William Jackson I’m not positive but I believe it does depending on the need. I suppose you test that by starting the generator and disconnecting the ground from the fuel pump. Good question👍
William Jackson sounds like you have a circuit board issue. It most likely controls the fuel pump. The voltage regulator board might be out if the circuit board is good. Try a search for your model like “no power to fuel pump”. Have you checked the fuel pump ground? Voltage on the fuel pump wires where they come out of the board/regulator?
Good video, thanks for posting, i'm just curious, did you happen to check if there was any stuff in the fuel filter, which looks like it's on the inlet side of the pump? I used to be a mechanic and am a true believer in fuel filter replacements!
Thanks for the comment. Yep, fuel filter was clear of debris. I failed to mention that I had removed the filter and checked it. I really didn't think it was a fuel problem. I was wrong since the gen has been running great for almost two weeks now.
ok, i was just curious, it did sound like a fuel problem to me, but then it could have been many things, glad you got it fixed!!! Be Safe and Have a Great Day!!
found out whats wrong with the generator , its the CB2 reset lever , now only if i knew how to put my hands , on the back of the ckt board , to reset it , without getting hurt .
I checked the volts on the terminal the outgoing 110V lines are going out. I had two circuits, a 20 amp and a 30 amp. Checked both. I did get a new fuel filter when I did the pump. Also checked the old one which looked clear but installed a new one as I'm like you about them. Cheap Insurance.
Yes there is:). Here's another note: generator started running for 10-20 minutes then dies. This time it was simply "Change the Oil" dummy thing. Was getting too hot with three year old Oil!!! Can't believe it went three years!!!
what did you use to get the plastic cover off , to get to the wires , i have a 1999 tropical , with a generac generators gn-480 , tried to started twice , heart a clacking noise , then , nothing , start / stop button , does nothing , no noise nothing , battery's are fine , dont have a clue whats wrong with it .
on mine, there were 4-6 small 3/8 bolts that needed to be taken off to get the cover off. Sounds like yours may be the starter motor. I had to replace mine too before any of these other issues. I had to take the generator out to get to the starter. When I did I saw that a woodrat or other rodent had made a nest in there. The starter motor was bad. Replaced motor and started right up. You might have other issues but I would test power through the switch to make sure you're getting power to the starter. If it's not turning over, the starter might be the culprit...Good luck Joseph!

have this one and starter broke do you have to pull the whole thing to get to starter thats up against the wall

I think voltage adjustments are made under load. Put it under full load and check it. You'll probably find it too low.
