This is not the 'real' Shangari-La. The name was taken by the city of the then Zhong Dien for tourist purposes. The real Shangari-La is the white mountain, Mei Li Xeu Shan, although mythical this is much more like the Shangari-La that James Hilton envisaged. To go there take the route to Upper Yubeng, far away to the north and west, to the mountain range bordering Myanmar, Tibet and Assam. Go to Deqan and from there to Upper Yubeng by 4-wheel drive to the border of the protected area and then the obligitory Landcruiser to Upper Yubeng. You won't be disappointed.

It's hard to say where the real Shangri-La was likely located, but this place named Shangri-La in Yunnan province is definitely a pretty stunning area, with Meili Snow Mountain, as you mentioned, reaching 6700 meters altitude. It's the tallest mountain in the province.

It is understanding emptiness and that, that awareness is fleeting as well.
    It is in yourself
