Really well done pleasant video!! I am an American from NYC living in Saigon the past 30 years. I saw this video when it was first posted and decided to make a trip there with my wife as we were also interested to visit Lijiang. We found a great all inclusive tour for a very reasonable price as tours like this are crazy cheap from Vietnam. Just as we were about to forward the tour cost.... bang! Anyway... watching the video again... I am resolved to go there when we can.
Best of luck when you eventually get there.. You'll have a ball..
That's caterpillars fungus things is Himalaya Viagra called "Yarsagumba". It's very expensive .
What the girl was selling are not worms but a fungus, "yarsa gumba"( cordiceps) very prized for its health benefits, including as an aphrodisiac . It's an important source of revenue for people in the Himalayas, in Nepal, Buthan and Tibet. It is also sold as tea.
Its resonance! I can feel the happiness of your heart!
Beautiful Shangrila, beautiful lucky pray flag and big Dharma Om ma ni Pema mai hung 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Going up the stairs I would set up air tanks. Four RMB per 5 minutes of air. I would pay 20 rmb up and 20 rmb down that day. Good day to you and Michelle 😎🤗🤗😎
I could have done with that :o) The air was pretty thin.. Thanks Eric..
I can’t believe I’m looking at the streets of Shang -la thank you both so much for taking us on your trip with you ,stay safe guys love from Ireland
Love back at yeh! Thanks
Hi Steve, I am also a traveling Chef and visited Shangri-La back in 2018, one thing I like to add on you had forgotten to mention ! That there also is a real grown Shangri- La wine available which the red is not bad at all. cheers, Joachim
Cheers buddy, thanks for sharing that
many people said “zhaxidele” to you which means good wishes something like that. And it is a kind of greeting like "Nihao "
Good vlog !!
This seems like a dream place to live in !! I'm sure it's one of the most relaxing.
Great tour of Shangri La. Thank you for sharing your trip.
Thank you sharing this video….Maybe is so late,But I want tell you about the Old Town of Shangri-la,The five statue is Tibetan monks with Chinese soldiers,And the 90% shop is Chinese people on the Old Town,
Are you saying that the Old town is mostly Han Chinese?
@@Steve-Owens I mean is 90% of the shops and hotels are owned by Han Chinese,
@@Kelsang- OK, I didn't know that. Thanks
Where did you get that info? Did you ask in each shop?
This channel is so great ❤🌹
Wow.. Thanks :o) 👍
Incredible, I wouldn’t be able to go so high a altitude 🙏 send a prayer for my family x
Good movie of Shangrila Steve I was there at the French restaurant and Helen's pizza good job on the movie. For best Korean chicken go to the Korean restaurant near the square in the center of the Old Town where they dance on weekends.

HI, Steve, I had been livin in Shangri-la for 3 years, and witnessed half of this old town burnt down in2013 and rebuilt in 2014, so what you see is not quite old, but rebuilt ones.

Still half remained the same, right?
@@firefly4784 yes,the local residental area still remains

Subscribed!!! Hello from Dali, China!!!! It is soooo fun to watch all your videos. I’ve learned so much about new foods and keeping an open mind to trying new things!!!!
Loved Dali, thank you for having us :o)
How much percent of population of dali is tibetan?
I spent several years of my childhood here and have been homesick for it recently. We lived just at the edge of old town. Thank you for your delightful video exploring it -- seeing it brought happy tears to my eyes.
When you go back next time it will be helpful to know that if you're pointing at something that deserves reverence (like the religious murals, statues, prayer wheels, etc) you should point with your whole hand, palm up. Pointing with one finger is considered disrespectful. Pointing with your whole hand is a tiny thing but it'll help the locals feel that you respect their culture.
I visited this place in 2018 and I stayed in the same hotel
I'll be in lijiang on the 3rd of December. Your videos definitely helps me a lot. Thanks.
Excellent. It will be busy I suspect but you'll love it.. Try to get to Shangri La
@@Steve-Owens normally I travel to China each year on December month. Local people will not travel so much on December and can consider on that period is off peak.
Oh my gosh!! How funny is that?! That place that you went into with the swords is where I bought my chopsticks. I highly recommend that place if you're going to buy chopsticks, but he is a stickler on prices.
LOL.. Nice!

Hi was watching your video, wonder how you travelled on your own from Kunming to Shangrila. I am really interested how you manage. I dont read
mandarin but can speak a little mandarin.
Right now, I can't recall. it was not complicated..
In all of these shops you should be able to bargain the price by quite a lot
Love to watch my ancestors culture who came from Purang, Tibet.
Happy to have you along..
your name is indian
8:17 Tibetan traditional dance called "gorshey".......people do it for exercise
26:20 it's a Tibetan dice game called "sho para"(usually only adults play it while drinking idk why they show kids playing it)
Thanks for sharing that information
Steve, you are a very cute old man... 😄
Wow! Amazing digs again 👍
It’s funny, until now, I always thought Shangri-la was a mythical fantasy utopia, I didn’t realise it existed in real life as well.
It is a very enchanting place isn’t it.
Loved the jolly monk, practicing his mantra voice haha!
That thin air looks absolutely exhausting.
The tibetans certainly love their bright colours don’t they? All those prayer flags and bright adornments inside the temple areas. I’m so glad they seem to be openly keeping the tibetan traditions alive, despite the awful things that happened in the 1950’s.
Haha @ that little baby on the back of that moped.
It looks like you almost had the place to yourselves, so few people; such a difference to the other places you have been to.
An absolutely fascinating video, Steve, thanks once again for showing us around and sharing this amazing place with us, it’s much appreciated. ❤️🙏👍
Thanks Rick, Although there have been some awful things happen in Tibet over the years, there is some hope that here, the traditions and this ethnic minority survive and prosper but I do accept this may not be case all over China..
What's amazing, is seeing just how different regions of China are. Here they look and talk differently to other parts of China and are using a language that bears no resemblance to Mandarin.. I love it :o)
What awful things in 1950?
Steve Owens
Traditions and cultures of all ethnic minorities are well advocated and preserved across China. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to observe them on your trips, would you? I am sure your media have been painting a different picture though.
It was not called Shangri-la before. It was called Zhongdian. They changed the name to attract foreign tourists, marketing gimmick.
That's right. Shangri La is just a name in a book from the 30"s. "Lost horizon". Here they renamed the town just for the tourists. I have been there.
Hi Steve and better Half. The Tibetan Monks do the tinshaw and the bowls out of special material. it you wish to buy one the real ones have some special metals called rare earth minerals. It is forged in the mountain and the special ingredient it from there too. I had the privilege to have one i my hand ant it is full of special energy. The smell is very distinct and rare earthiest. If you can find one you have a special artifact from Tibets past. Peace, Love, Lazaro
Thanks for the Info.. :o) 👍👌
Those little caterpillars are the The Viagra Of The Himalayas, but be careful using them at high altitude :-)
:o)
NICE VIDEO, GIVE YOU A SUPPORT. SUBSCRIBED. 👍
How long are they traveling??? Like it began 6 Months ago in Korea and they arme still on the Journey ^^
4 and a Half years so far and no plan to stop, ever. As yet
@@Steve-Owens Thats incredible! Awesome. I am really happy for you.
But may one ask how you are able to afford that?
Everywhere in China, Taiwan and maybe HK has a lot of steps to climb at tourist attractions, I guess that's why the locals are slim apart from the genetic aspect. Lol
Indeed..
Shangri la or gyanganj...here you can achieve your life goal..with hidden spiritual gurus
Look just like on the TV looks really mysterious let me know how your trip turned out
Will do :o)
those worm-like are very expensive roots of a plant from high mountain, you should've bought some and drink it which will make Michele happy at night

When i was a kid, reading Donald duck comic that mention Shangri-La story, i think it just a myth place 😂
Donald duck indeed. Interesting recollection.. 👍
Shambala's the land of the pure in Buddhism? China's developed all her places so well and its' clean everywhere. There are such a great variety of fruit and veg, and everything else and everything you can buy in the world. Place like Dali, Kunming, Lijiang etc are pollution free and are most cities all over China today?
Anne Teoh
Urr.. no. Yunnan is pollution free because there is not much industry there. Yunnan is one of the poorest provinces in China actually. Other Chinese cities are getting better with pollution though and has been transitioning to renewable energy
yibai= 100 you are right👍👍
are y in Tibet?
I am with Tibetan people..

Locals’ public awareness and education have not been able to catch up with the infrastructure development of that town. Young generations should be better. I guess you don’t see as many young people spitting or blowing noses on the streets...

Dali Lama is banned from there ,Damn shame.
A different part of the world but yes, it is a shame..
you know nothing, when you talk about something u should learn about it totally。
What are you talking about? The old town was burnt in a fire some years ago and the Chinese government rebuilt it. Dalai Lama, that biggest serf owner? You don't know Tibet was a medieval theocratic serfdom under Dalai Lama? CCP liberated all serfs and did land reforms to distribute lands to them. You want Dalai Lama to go back and enslave people again?
Dalai Lama is the monarch of slavery. It seems that you don't know about history and are misled by the false information of Western media. Stupid guy. ruclips.net/video/Wvo8MXny5XI/видео.html&has_verified=1&bpctr=1576335022 (Tibetan truth)
Thanks for that link it was fascinating, I was looking for something like it but it's hard to find, I know a bit about this history, so thanks.
You really should not hold leaders in such reverence, they don't represent us, what was happening then and now is not good.
You are you. Live your life and try not to let stupid government decide your views, we are all connected and not connected in the same way, a centralised government doesn't represent you any more that is does me.
You may like to label of yourself as Chinese, I might Label myself as European? But these labels are silly. China is a region of wonderful mixed people, with great history of their own.
I come from Europe but I don't consider I belong to the Label European any more than a Carrot is a "Vegetable" but foremost it is a Carrot, it did not ask to be labelled a Vegetable and unless you told it over and over it was one, I hope that makes sense.
Have a wonderful life and thanks for the link.
Steve
Please Tibet and china is different
Tibetan is not a part of China
