      I think the best summary of Dan is the line: "I know when I'm out of my depth", delivered when he finds the gold on the Garrets claim, and after throwing Brom to his death. I think it shows his character perfectly- he is not merely a dumb brute, but someone who knows his limits and is loyal to a fault.
      Love Dan, such a brilliant addition to the show

      That's probably what I love most about Deadwood - almost none of the characters are black or white. The writers leave enough room to let the audience decide how they feel about the characters, rather than just spelling it out for the viewer.

      5 YEARS LATER... Bullock is the mirror of Al. Al is, on the surface, a brutal and merciless dictator of a man desperately trying to hold back his empathy. Bullock is, on the surface, a good and honest man trying desperately to hold back his violent savagery. They recognize that in each other, eventually. Scenes like this point to that fact; Seth is basically saying "I can't kill him, but Al can, and we'd all be better off if he were dead." It's almost an admission of his own shortcomings. Seth can do for Al what he himself cannot be seen to do but might want to, and vice versa.

    Dan gave stupid viewers hope, those of us who couldn't always follow the way dialogue outlined the intrigue. We knew there was a plan, and had to often just trust in whatever it was that Swearengen was meaning, whilst puzzling at Hearst, understanding them little. Then he would say something like this, and we'd all be clear as day in our minds... for a minute. Yes, the best drama I have ever seen, and a true American one at that.

    I also love what this scene reveals about Dan's and Bullock's relationship (or really, of course, Bullock's relationship with the Gem). There was a time when Bullock coming in ranting like that and ordering Dan around would have been a hostile provocation that might have ended in bloodshed. But here, Dan dutifully stops pouring and listens intently. They're on the same page as allies. Just such masterful, economic characterization right there. Just flawless execution all around.

    @rodolpheleon5788 11 лет назад +4

    eh, there was a slight decline but you're exaggerating it. The main problem with season 3 was the inclusion of the largely irrelevant theater troupe sideplot and some plausibility issues in the main plot (why didn't they just kill Hearst? he was practically defenseless the whole time he was in the camp)

    • @colonelhart5721
      @colonelhart5721 7 лет назад +6

      There is a reason why they didn't just kill Hearst. If you watch the video "Deadwood - Hearst shares his philosophy on gold," you'll notice that as he is walking through the camp, he is constantly making slight motions, seemingly to no one in particular, every few moments. These are signals to all of the hidden agents he has in the camp, letting them know not to kill the man standing next to him (yet). He even says that the conversation he is having is only taking place because he has already prevented his agents in the restaurant they have just come from, from killing the man just for sitting at the same table as him. Hearst has both uniformed and disguised agents all through Deadwood and you can't just kill him. Even Bullock, who probably avoids getting shot down because he has a gun in Hearst's face and could kill Hearst before dying himself, later admits that even if he were able to kill Hearst, the camp would be razed in retribution. I would love to see what the situation led to in Season 4 which never happened, and perhaps we'll see it if they ever make the Deadwood movie(s). But Hearst had defenses aplenty. From the moment he arrived, he was the most protected and the most dangerous man in the camp.

    • @buckaroobanzai7063

      They didn't kill Hearst because doing so would mean the end of the camp. You don't just assassinate someone as important and powerful as Hearst without major consequences. Not killing him wasn't a plausibly issue. Hell, Hearst pulled similar shit in real life and no killed him.
