Hi Emily & Ben: I googled about the dead fish and according to Chris Desai of UOCEAN, there were "1,000's of fish that suffocated because the oxygen levels have dropped by 7%. Fish can normally manage at 40%--which is still not great--but they had no chance here. The heat has evaporated the river, causing it to become very shallow. That left too many fish competing for too little oxygen. The heat caused the algae to bloom and when that happens, it sucks even more oxygen out of the water. Mr. Desai said by deploying an aeriation boat into the water could help future incidents." Poor little fishies! I'm glad that Ben was able to free the blue dress (?) from the boat prop so that you could restart your engine. Jenny
@@MrSaltyV- sad no-one, IE the canals and river trust were unable to do anything to prevent, monitor and pump water into the low level parts of the river/canal system. The canals and rivers are not equally managed or maintained. Some are disgusting and toxic from industry dumping polluting waste into them. We can only hope videos showing the problems galvanise local people and resources are found to clean them up.
So pleased you made it, what a nightmare. Good article about the fish - New Scientist - "River Thames was pumped full of oxygen in 2022 to prevent fish deaths" Oxygenating boats are treating the symptoms, not the cause - CRT/EA need to create more waterfalls to oxygenate naturally.
We're so glad we found your channel, you guys just present in such a relaxed and lovely way. Seeing those parts of the country that we'd never have otherwise seen is also lovely, even seeing the bad (and that bad was very bad indeed!). Enjoy your break and thanks for continuing with the vlogs and, of course, Benny's fantastic music - love it all! Jim & Fran
Benny, what a star, even having cleared the weed hatch (been there, done that) in that gross canal water, you still come up joking and smiling! Charisma, talent, style and such a lovely disposition to life, I am so pleased you two found each other, a perfect partnership! Lovely vlog, as always, thanks for sharing.
Possibly not all down to them. If it's fly tipping from nearby properties the local authority should have enforcement powers. Even if those flats are private they'll be some leasehold arrangement to cover shared costs, so there'd be someone to take action against.
Oh my lord how selfish can people get throwing rubbish in the water, polluting it all for all the animals that live there, so disgusting!!!…. Come on Leicester clean up your waterways!!!!
OMG! That water looked putrid! 🤢 The poor wildlife 😢It’s always the innocent wildlife that ends up suffering for the actions of mindless ignorant people, littering and polluting the water. So frustrating and such a sad shame. Don’t think we’ll be hurrying in that direction! 🥴 Thanks! xx
Hi Emily & Benny, We really appreciate you taking us with you on your canal trips. We agree with you about the foul waters near Leicester, absolutely disgusting, Benny you did look a little wary 😢after your performance. Stay safe our lovely friends ❤xx
During the summer the most oxygenated water is near the surface and the water at the bottom is depleted of oxygen due to decomposition of leaves etc. after a big rain storm the two levels are mixed causing a net depletion of oxygen in the water. That is why so many fish die. I know this from personal experience, when I lost lots of fish in my pond a couple of years ago and researched it at the time. I love and look forward to seeing what you guys are up to each week 😊
Benny's singing is Amazing! Touches your soul. Sad about the fish/life in the canal . Beautiful cruise...love your sun glasses.. such spectacular scenery ❤️🙏
As I remember from when I worked in Leicester, there used to be some dyeworks around Frog Island (where you encountered a very stiff lock). This might have something to do with the state of the water just below it.
Argh that bubbling section looked utterly grim, so sad seeing dead fish. But yay at the perfect timing arriving at the lock, and making it to Loughborough in the heat ☺️
This was so nice to watch, the houses in an Amsterdam style are on the estate my grandparents lived on. I remember when they were building the rest of the estate, my granny would make the builders bacon sandwiches 😁 we’ve got a few of the architect’s drawings still, it’s a lovely place!
20:10 Yes. Warm water doesn't retain oxygen and often old plant material decay speeds up also fouling the water. Also, "run-off" from hot city streets pushes the water temperature higher. In my part of the US, they require retention ponds on new construction to prevent that happening.
Best report to that council who will report to the waterways to inspect but looks like it's people from those flats that need canal side windows sealed up! So bad in that area it has got to be shown up the canals had eels once too but they only live in clean canals.
This was like a stealth video! I wasn't expecting anything until Saturday as per your usual time. I was completely surprised to find this one posted 4 days ago! I was really shocked to see that bad stretch of water. I would think the authorities would be looking into that, as it has to be a health hazard not only to the marine life, but to the people who live there as well. I've decided you guys are now my favorite channel. Yours is the one I look forward to the most each week. 😊
So sad about the fish! That aweful section of canal in Leicester was emptied overnight by vandals when we came through. Took three hours to refill under CRT instruction and we only could do it this "quickly" without causing trouble behind us because it was being fed by the river!
Those lovely houses like in Amsterdam are in my home village, it’s so beautiful here. So glad you’re enjoying the river again now you’re out of the city xx
It was definitely not nice seeing those dead fish and the river looking terrible it was upsetting to see it. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to watching them.Alan is so cute and adorable.Have a lovely week all three of you.😽😊😊
The black stuff you saw floating has oxygen in it from decomposition - we get this in Spring when leaves and other organic stuff floats to the water surface after Winter melt-off in the canal. Brave boat restart, and cruise through the garbage soup
Hi guys. When on the farm a vet has a disposable glove that reaches to their shoulder. Maybe a good idea to purchase some of those for the disgusting tasks you need to do. Nice one you 3
Wow, that’s been an epic journey. Mostly lovely but that patch after Leicester was revolting. I can’t believe they done clear the canal - surely it’s terrible for the local people as well as the environment and the wildlife in the canal. Hopefully now the weather has changed it will be better for the fish but if the decomposing mess us left in the water that won’t help. Thank you for showing some if Benny’s gig. Lovely to hear - great vocal range too. Hope you’re having a lovely holiday now 😊
Hi Ben and Emily. Glad you managed to get through that broken lock so quickly and out of that polluted area of the canal. That rainstorm was amazing. Take care. Nick
What an experience boating through what appeared to be polluted water. Well done for keeping carm. The later river section appeared lovely Thanks for the peek at the gig.
That was a bad stretch of canal....sad to see....good that Benny's gig went well. Must be really hard work to plan your cruising to allow for where Benny plays, but you seem to manage it well!
I have been spending the last few days binging all of your videos; I am glad to find your channel and can't wait to start cruising myself. You both have given me the courage to live on a NB alone!
I regularly walk my dog along the stretch between Birstall and Loughborough (I was at locks 46 & 47 today), so hearing your comments of how beautiful it is makes me realise I shouldn’t take it for granted 😊. I did report the dead fish to the EA at the time..
The dead fish thing was all over the canals having watched other narrow boat channels.. even down London way. and it was the heat depleted the oxygen. in some places they were putting extra water in,, the CRT were and the Fire Brigade but was too little too late
There must be a technological solution whereby solar panels are used to drive motor driven aerators? Nice and environmentally friendly. Also, in Summer when the daylight hours are so much more, the units would work for well over 16 hours a day. Could also do with dredging to remove the suitcases and other detritus. Another great episode B&E, thanks.
Bless your hearts. That was quite a sludge spot you went through! Just look at the beauty you got to see afterwards! As always I so enjoy and look forward to your weekly videos😊
So sad about the rubbish in the canal. Who is responsible for cleaning that mess up - the local authorities or the canal trust? How do they allow it to get so bad? Brilliant vlog. Thank you for sharing. Please say “hi” to Alan for me.
It’s so sad to see the river in such a state, I hope the rain and cooler temperatures we’ve had recently has improved the water quality. What a trip that was, awful waters and sad fish. However you made it, now to be with friends. Nettle tea will help Benny with hay fever, natural antihistamine. Your shows are amazing, thank you. 🎶✨️❤️
No problems with fish at Saxilby Fossdyke Canal. It`s a bit faster flowing here. We do get algae but not seen it this year. Perhaps a solar panel next to the canal with an air pump every so often might help.
Great video, that part of Leicester btw the first lock and past space centre is notorious bad. It’s also a ‘river Ganges’ for cremations at the part you caught the prop. I always go dead slow thro there - sad to see the fish, I certainly think it’s pollution. Not been the first time. I’m moored at Pillings lock just before Loughborough. A great part of the river. Enjoy the trip guys
Always interesting and relaxing - thank you....... You ought to keep on board some hand disinfectant alcohol based gel to really clean your hand after immersing in that mucky canal water...
Wow the terry pratchett boat was amazing,& benny that mushroom 🍄 t-shirt was fantastic, Emily I agree it’s so sad to see the canal’s full of rubbish and how the wild life suffer,as all ways great video 😊
Another fantastic video ❤ love watching your escapades - fab music too! ~ Regards the dead fish - A similar thing happened in Norwich a few months back - a long spell of hot weather in the city, followed by heavy rain, washes the polution (which has collected in roof debris etc) into the water at a higher concentration than normal, that coupled with the oxygen levels naturally falling in the heat, meant most of the river's fish 🐟 all died... too sad, esp as it takes a while for the river to recover. ~
Don’t envy you clearing your prop in that water, I have a pair of very long pond gloves for such occasions, well worth investing in. Great vlog as always👍
Depending on how far behind the videos are, you get a lot of dead fish just after spawning, especially bream, Tench, as well as some carp. But as was partly right with the weather, oxygen depletion, and high algee build up as well.
When there is high rainfall in a short period of time it can overwhelm the sewer system and you'll get massive amounts of sewage/industrial runoff dumped into rivers and canals via overflows. Pretty sure a few water authorities are getting it the neck for that atm. Near/in a city the size of Leicester you'd have to expect significant issues.
Absolutely disgusting, yes I would say pollution of some form and yes coming from things thrown into the canal from the building maybe it's heartbreaking 😢, we just missed Benny at Middlewich Boat Festival, gutted, have a great week all of you, much love, Kay, Dave and Bubba x 😽💞
Leicester is 50% Indian/Pakistan,some areas pretty much 100%. Unfortunately they also brought their eco culture with them. Not racist,a observation leave the river and youll see the same onland. I live near the end of todays video and it is quite nice,my wife runs along the canal,we move onto a boat in about a year so am looking forward to see the rest of the journey.
Hi Benny and Emily The water companies have this tear been allowed to put more raw sewage and untreated/ contaminated water into the water ways and coastal areas. Doesn't help with the heat wave and rising water temps.
Hi Emily & Ben: I googled about the dead fish and according to Chris Desai of UOCEAN, there were "1,000's of fish that suffocated because the oxygen levels have dropped by 7%. I read a news article about it also, so sad the hot weather, low water levels and algal bloom caused such deverstation.
plus a small area will heat much faster ...
That's awful, thank you for the information Jenny.
Sad but nice to know its.not pollution!😢

Depending on how far behind the videos are, you get a lot of dead fish just after spawning, especially bream, Tench, as well as some carp. But as was partly right with the weather, oxygen depletion, and high algee build up as well.
You two ROCK.
...💜 luv n light blessings ✝💜...🍁
Another great video. Sad about the state of the water in Leicester. Love the music ❤️❤️
Ben and Emily your both nice people! Good luck on your travels. Will travel with you!
You are a very natural relaxing couple to follow and I love seeing you learn and overcome your fears and problems. Thankyou for taking me along 🤗
Thanks guys, I really enjoyed that video. Lots of different things going on in it throughout your journey. I’d love to try that beer though 😊
