Ok. Now it's arrived. I've hooked it up to Ableton, pulled up an instrument plugin for testing. Just a simple one for now, Arturia Mellotron V. I've assigned it to all the parameters of the mellotron, and holy moley! What a difference it makes. I'm just loving the crap out of this little thing already. Thank you so much for showing me this. I am extremely grateful, and a very happy boy. You rock!
Great video! I needed a real producer to talk about real use cases so i can figure out if it fit for mine. And it definitely does. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Well. Thanks to you I am now getting a midimix. I love playing around with soft synths. I can not afford neither the cost nor the space to get physical synths, but I have plenty of room for synth vsts to run in Ableton, along with my MPK88 keyboard. What I've always missed though is the tactile connection to the synth itself that you get when you turn physical knobs, move faders and push buttons. That's when I came across this video several weeks ago. Telling me that I actually can assign a midi controller directly to the controls of a virtual midi instrument. Instead of just using it for controlling the DAW. That blew my mind. Also you put my attention to the MIDImix. I have buttons and faders on both the Akai MPK88 and my trusty Akai APC 40, but the amount on the MPK88 is limited, although I got a nice little taste of what can be done. Neither did I want to mess around with the setup for the APC 40. I'm fine with it doing what it does, integrating perfectly into Ableton out of the box. If it works, don't mess with it. I wanted a separate controller that I could feel free to just mess around with, without the risk of breaking the rest of my setup. In spite of doing extensive research on the Novation Launchpad and other alternatives I found that based on the various reviews, hailing the virtues of one or the other controller, the MIDImix still seems to me like the optimal combo of price and capabilities. I also have learned to appreciate the build quality of Akai controllers. So I have been really wanting a MIDImix for weeks now. Then recently my birthday came up, and my beloved big sister couldn't figure out what to give me. So she gave me money. About exactly enough to buy a MIDImix. How awesome is that? So now I'm eagerly awaiting a package in the mail, containing my own Akai MIDImix. Yay! I'm so excited, I can hardly wait. 😁 Looking forward to learning more about how to assign midi controls to the MIDImix. Thank you for making me aware of this and showing how it can be done. Keep up the good work. 👍
On a happy day i came looking for a legit video for knobs to map, and the map brought me here my friend, know that 2 year later your video is still helping, gonna get one of these and enter the midimix family! In Fruity loops btw
The only thing I was concerned about with this controller was the size of the knobs. But, DJ Tech Tools sells their proprietary Chroma Caps and they'll fit on there! They're taller and will feel much better than the ones that ship with the Akai. This was perfect man. Singlehandedly sold me on the Midimix! Ordering today. Thanks!!
About the DJing-ish image setup that you showed, it's AmpFreqq2. That's why i bought it. It's basically a Dub live mixing tower, connected to the software AmpFreqq2. Since they design the soft for the midimix, the sell stickers , and even replacement knobs (they're higher than the originals). But, since i wanted to try to build mine, i've made a preset for Ableton, and it's really awesome to play with delays on this thing. I've also seen some people using it for photo/video editing, connecting it to Photoshop or DaVinci Resolve. And gess what, apparently it's awesome too! I love this gear
Maybe you can help. Tech support is enthusiastic but uninformatuve. I have 8 launchpad x’s being merged into a single 8 ch midi stream. It will trigger percusdion sounds across 8 midi ch om a 1010 blackbox. All good. But i need to send out a remapped clone of that 8 ch stream to a midi triggered DMX lighting controller. The problem is, i only have about 30 light effects to trigger. Which means out of the 512 different sounds across 8 midi ch, (8 x 64 pads/launchpad), i have to remap the 512 midi note #s across 8 ch down to 1 ch, with only about 18-20 note #s. So note#s 1-19 on ch 1 would be remapped to note#2 on ch9. 20-40 on ch 1 remapped to to note#3 on ch9. 41-64 on ch 1 remapped to notez#4 on ch9. That’s launchpad 1 64 note#s remapped. Launchpad 2-8 incoming would be similar. All being remapped to ch 9, but incremental note#s. 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, 14-16, etc, up to about 30, in groups of 18-22 original note#s. So that multiple pads will trigger same dmx light effect assigned to each of the 30 note#s on ch 9. I’ve been searching for a box that can do this. Closest i’ve come is midipipe, a free midi mapping app. But the whole idea is to not have to use the computer at all, since it will be occupied with other tasks. Can midimix remap incoming midi note#s across 8 midi ch down to 1 midi ch and about 30 different note #s? Thx Randy
This has to be the best video ive seen about anything, ever. I have no idea what you're talking about, (complete virgin to midi) but ampfreqq brought me here, and i'd love to buy you that coffee bro. i'd love to buy your mind and style too hahaha but thankyou so much for this, i havent even fiished watching but you seem like genius and cool personified. big up
Was thinking about getting this or the Novation equivalent but this video pushed me over the edge to get the midimix. As soon as it arrived I replaced all the shitty knobs with replacements from Adafruit and it's a hundred times better. Thanks dude!
cut up a usb cable & poked the end through the kensington lock hole into the back of my midimix, bit of soldering, now it's ready to use with my deluge, & (& & & &) anything downstream of the deluge's midi output. kool. still got the midi input on the deluge for my keyboard controller. oh, & the original usb socket on the midimix is still there & functional for programming porpoises.
I got a midimix about a week ago and have been using it "as intended" as a mixer with the default mappings for Ableton alongside an APC mini. Watching this video makes me want to get a second one.
I'm just getting started making music, and my current setup consists of my computer at my desk and my full-size weighted key Casio digital piano to the right of me. That's it. It's really awkward when I want to tweak parameters in Vital while I'm playing because my right hand is on my mouse and my left hand is fully extended under my right arm to my keyboard. But that's about to change soon, because I'll have an M-Audio Oxygen Pro 25 which not only fits on my desk right in front of me, but also has knobs. But then I would have to find a place for my typing keyboard because my desk is too small to have them both in a comfortable position on the desk. I'm mixing my first "real" track right now (which is still mostly an experiment) and I'm thinking if I'm gonna end up spending a lot of time mixing, a Midimix might be just what I need.
I use my Akai midiMix as my drum machine with bitwig. The knobs are used to control euclidean generators and drum parameters. It is perfect. It also makes a good bass and arp controller.
Great vid. Super helpful. Had mine in the bottom drawer for the last while, but I KNEW there was more potential for it! Still on the low end of the steep learning curve that is midi mapping, but...your vid inspires me to climb the climb! Thanks and all the best, Brooke
I'm getting back into producing after a hiatus of over a decade. I was an softsynth OG and my controller of choice was an Evolution UC16. I still have it but it's wonky and gives out all kinds of random signals. So I deciced to splash out and go for an all new setup with the midimix, an mpd 218 and an Arturia keylab 49 essential MK3. Oh and I accidentally ordered a mk1 Arturia as well wich I will probably be sending back. I still own FL studio and with the free liftime updates on that I dont think I need to spend on the software side. I bought the midimix especially with the intention of not using it as a mixer but more as a synth and effects controller.
MIDIMix is very cool. I had one several years ago. I made a video on how to use MIDI learn on Akai Force andnthats still my most viewed video 😂. Anyway. One thing I'd recommend to anyone with or looking to buy a MIDIMix is to replace the stock knobs with aome with a taller, more grippy profile. It elevates it to even higher levels of usability. Jsut make sure you buy the correct fitting 👍
I saw this beautiful beast of hardware today at a music shop and I thought: "I want to use this to control synths in Logic. So thank you for proving me that this is indeed possible. Also I'm thinking of making custom cardboard cutaways for the different synths I intend to use this with (which would emulate what the person who had the camouflage stickers on it but mine would be removable.)
Just bought one on emotion then found your video to justify my purchase. Ultra uber stoked to learn editor software exists so I can avoid CC conflicts with my other controllers
I wanted a midi controller first and foremost to control Sugar Bytes Turnado. Then after driving myself doolally with the amount of controllers on the market, I finally chose the Launchpad 49 from Novation only for one of the knobs to stop working almost immediately. So that's where I'm at. Then I saw this on Amazon in stock and wandered around for videos on it, and saw yours. you've done a great job on selling me on this by the way. I too have an old midi keyboard I can use (For drums too) and yes I wont be able to connect the two devices, but that's not the end of the world for me. A big thank you for the video.
Great video! Would be fun to use as a drum machine kind of like a tr-8 or tr-8s. Could even assign one knob on each track as a sample selector to quickly sift through different hi hats. Have you tried this?
i haven't! that's a great idea though! most often i will map 5 or 6 knobs to a drums release and attack- or it's pitch and stuff like that. but doing a whole 8 drum kit mapped out like that would be hella sweet. great idea!
Yeah I bought an LPD8 when they first came out and fuckin broke it the day I got it. Luckily I knew a guy who worked there. He ended up stabbing someone and going to prison. I don’t know why I’m telling you this.
Bro. Awesome video. I have a question about the banks. I’d like the first one to be a project template where each fader is the volume of an entire track, and then have the second bank represent the 8pads of the drum program specifically on an MPC. Is that possible?
yeah you just map it as such! you match each track fader in ableton with the faders on the device and same with the drum perimeters. it's all up to how you decide to map it!
@@wowflower oh ok! I seen some people say they couldn’t do it. Maybe because we’re trying to do it on standalone. Could be we can only do it that way if we’re using ableton
I just wanted to update you on how I've configured my Midimix for a DJ environment. I have 8 different fx plugins mapped (1 to each channel) with all the important parameters linked to the above buttons and knobs on a single return track. All my tracks are being sent to one channel which the master fader can adjust the amount of fx to. It works great in a live situation..Not so well for a studio setup as once you adjust the settings, it screws up the automation.. But hey I'm working on that too.. Hope you are keeping well.
that's rad!!! and yeah once you record the automation it likes to only have one recorded version per modified parameter. if you wanna mess about just turn off automation tracking and only turn it on when you want to commit to an automation move.
@@wowflower I just had a EUREKA moment . It works. instead of putting the chain on a send channel I route all tracks to one channel and put the chain on there. Then the automation works AND saves at different parts of the track.. Gawd I love this controller!!!
Excellent video! Do you know if this would work with hardware synths that have 5 pin midi? I want knobs and sliders to control a synth I have that has midi CC so that I don't have to menu dive. Might get this for Ableton alone, but would like to have something than can control hardware too for DAWless.
Thinking about getting 2 of these to control 16 channels in Ableton -- so they faders can be midi mapped? My concern would be if the faders are auto assigned, but sounds like you could assign the faders to whatever you want?
Daaamn, I JUST ordered an M -Vave SMC-Mixer because of my desire for tactile changes (loving the MPC Studio, my first controller, but I need more knobs and sliders :D) It was only $65, but knowing this exists... the M-Vave is gonna go straight back to Amazon when it gets here in 2-4 weeks haha
Great video - super helpful with getting a better idea of what this thing can do before buying. I'm currently working on Logic and I'm just trying to find an affordable and mappable controller to mix tracks in real time. Emulating dub techniques with a mouse and keyboard is not nearly as fun lol. It seems that a big part of your love for the Midimix comes from its power with Ableton -would you recommend it to a Logic user like myself? Thanks!
I never got a grip on mapping with Logic, but these days I'm sure it's equally as capable! I've been toying with the idea of making some Logic Pro focused videos. Also, thank you for thek ind words Cofield!
Would it be possible to do the same thing with the korg Nano Control 2? I can’t find anyone talking about it but I would like to use it to control instrument racks in 2 separate tracks going to different midi keyboards. Thanks in advance :)
I sold my APC MK2 about a year ago since I was taking a break from music and it was just kinda big. That was my fav controller besides the DJ Techtools MIDI Fighter Twister. Well I’m back at the music thing and it’s impossible to find the MK2 again lol Came to your vid after seeing the MIDI Mix. Very well done video. Gave me a lot to think about. I still have my Push 2 and MF Twister, but am missing sliders 😩 Gonna toy around with some ideas and see what makes sense for me. Thanks for all the info!
Near future goal is to make an overlay for the midimix via laser engraver to cut holes, and engrave the text! My end game is hopes of creating several freestanding, mini pc/midimix synths for dirt cheap. :)
Got my midimix for my 1010 bluebox….I know that they work together but I got on a rabbit trail of different devices to use backing tracks without a ‘DAW’…ended up coming back to this combo recently while getting ready for a live band gig. It has it’s limitations but I think it will be good enough.
I just got one for the exact same purpose as you it seems; fits me like a glove. However, anyone knows how to get the led lights to work? I've tried two of them and neither in bitwig nor ableton live does the mute and rec arm or any buttons at all light up.
yeah the lights seem to do their own thing when you unmap their preset record/arm function. Not the end of the world though, especially considering the amount of mapping you'd need to write down / memorize.
@@wowflower Well both that we tested at the store I bought it never light up at all, none, at any time, in either live or bitwig, even before I touch any mapping or setting. So I guess my question is: If e.g. you just connect a new one out of the box to usb, should anything on it light up? (Also thank you for answering, and thank you for the video!)
Excellent review, bought mine a few years ago and have hardly touched it, so thanks for the inspiration :) I mapped my finger to your subscribe and like buttons :)
I like your video. Frankenstein is right! I use mine as remote also and able to map a lot of the Cherry Audio PS-20. Love the control! Gonna also use for the Arturia Modular V. It's so good!
Hi. I’m about to get MIDIMix however I don’t use Ableton. I use Pro Tools and May be Cubase in future. Do you know if there is a drawback using this controller with any other DAW?
not that I'm aware of - as I mentioned in the video, ableton is the most comfortable daw for me when in comes to mapping. in my opinion they have it down best but whatever daw you are comfortable with is the right daw to use!
Hello sir, I'm using ableton live 10 and was wondering if I had this midimix could I save mappings with the devices in ableton and to also save the mapping for any other plugin and can always pull it up with out having to remap everything?
When I plug it in on my computer GarageBand says there is 1 MIDI divice connected but I can’t find it on the MIDI list, does someone know how to fix that?
encouraging. I just got one of these and I hope to map it to control apple motion and logic. plug and play hasn't been rewarding just yet which is why I'm scouring RUclips. thanks.
Beginner here and thought this video was great! I’m looking for a cheap controller for ableton and think this would be perfect for me but can I just check it’s possible to use to change pitch? Sorry if answer is obvious!
Hi! this is helpful and hopeful. I wonder if you help/ consult how to do the mapping? I've got the idea of what I want to do with my tracks live, but I'm new to Ableton and my midi mix. have a project coming up in a few weeks and I'm having trouble getting it done on my own! let me know! thanks
hey lauren, i don’t do private ableton consulting just yet. thank you for the kind words though! good luck with your project- and remember to check out abletons tutorials they release on their website and youtube channel. they are good with helping getting started on ableton.
great find. But it'd still be a challenge for me to map soft synths like Cherry Audio's Elka-X and MemoryMode. 40 plus buttons, 40 plus knobs and and a few faders.
Hey, that’s my Serum map! Fun!
whoaaa!!! good stuff homie!! ❤️🔥
Track to remote …so simple . You are the only video to explain this so clearly . Thank you

Great video! Would be fun to use as a drum machine kind of like a tr-8 or tr-8s. Could even assign one knob on each track as a sample selector to quickly sift through different hi hats. Have you tried this?
i haven't! that's a great idea though! most often i will map 5 or 6 knobs to a drums release and attack- or it's pitch and stuff like that. but doing a whole 8 drum kit mapped out like that would be hella sweet. great idea!
I’d like to find out if I can use my tr8 as a mixer for another hardware device..specifically the faders🤔🤔🤔
Great vid, thanks so much!
Yeah I bought an LPD8 when they first came out and fuckin broke it the day I got it.
Luckily I knew a guy who worked there. He ended up stabbing someone and going to prison. I don’t know why I’m telling you this.
What a shame. Very sad story
@@anidea5646 could be that! just make sure to set the devices remote function on in settings !
i was just looking for some midi controller with multiple knobs and this is perfect! great video btw i had a good laugh haha
Thanks for the video! I'm getting this too.
Might get this for Ableton alone, but would like to have something than can control hardware too for DAWless.
not sure how to rig it for dawless use but if it's midi and mapable it should work!
Thinking about getting 2 of these to control 16 channels in Ableton -- so they faders can be midi mapped? My concern would be if the faders are auto assigned, but sounds like you could assign the faders to whatever you want?
yeah change the midi function to remote in preferences and you will have all the mapping possibilities you want at your fingertips!
@@wowflower nice thanks!
Had a midimix collecting dust, I forgot about now I'm using it with launchcontrol hella buttons
This guy is cooler than ice. 😂. I bet a studio session with him would be dope aF
Daaamn, I JUST ordered an M -Vave SMC-Mixer because of my desire for tactile changes (loving the MPC Studio, my first controller, but I need more knobs and sliders :D)
It was only $65, but knowing this exists... the M-Vave is gonna go straight back to Amazon when it gets here in 2-4 weeks haha
@@wowflower Some Logic Pro vids would be sick
Thanks mate.might ask some questions i time to come.
Would it be possible to do the same thing with the korg Nano Control 2? I can’t find anyone talking about it but I would like to use it to control instrument racks in 2 separate tracks going to different midi keyboards.
Thanks in advance :)
yeah just make sure in system settings you have the nano control set to remote! that should let you map freely
Do these work with mpcs my freind has one for f.l studio ...could use one for the mpc
I sold my APC MK2 about a year ago since I was taking a break from music and it was just kinda big. That was my fav controller besides the DJ Techtools MIDI Fighter Twister.
Well I’m back at the music thing and it’s impossible to find the MK2 again lol
Came to your vid after seeing the MIDI Mix. Very well done video. Gave me a lot to think about. I still have my Push 2 and MF Twister, but am missing sliders 😩
Gonna toy around with some ideas and see what makes sense for me. Thanks for all the info!
I used to use an APC! I liked it but also thought it was way too big lol
How the heck do you set it up with Logic? Why does everything have to be so difficult for me lol?
Near future goal is to make an overlay for the midimix via laser engraver to cut holes, and engrave the text! My end game is hopes of creating several freestanding, mini pc/midimix synths for dirt cheap. :)
fantastic idea!!
I use one of these as a control surface for a digital lighting console (qlc+). It’s so much better than having to use a mouse or touchscreen
awesom!
funny and very helpful as i'm looking to pick one up. i think you sold me on it. thank *YOU*
enjoy it!!!!! thank u
I came here hoping to listen exactly to everything you explained, so thank you
Got my midimix for my 1010 bluebox….I know that they work together but I got on a rabbit trail of different devices to use backing tracks without a ‘DAW’…ended up coming back to this combo recently while getting ready for a live band gig. It has it’s limitations but I think it will be good enough.
Love! Can I ask that you make more videos demonstrating the different types of uses that you mentioned?
i have quite a few videos about how i use this thing up already!
@@wowflower which ones? I can't tell by their titles where to find the MIDI Mix...
Which brand is that black square box? I saw them on a great live set, the guy was using three of them. I'd definitely appriciate if anyone tells me.
can you be more specific?
@@wowflower Exactly at 00:48. But I found it. It's Midi Fighter's Twister. Thank you for the video.
Excellent review, bought mine a few years ago and have hardly touched it, so thanks for the inspiration :) I mapped my finger to your subscribe and like buttons :)
lolllll thank you gary!!!
@@wowflower My pleasure, love your reviewing style :) This thing is a PITA to hook up with Cakewalk's ACT protocol :(
i have 2 midixes and 2 apc minis, for a full 16 channel monster apc.
I like your video. Frankenstein is right! I use mine as remote also and able to map a lot of the Cherry Audio PS-20. Love the control! Gonna also use for the Arturia Modular V. It's so good!
Great video!
Hello sir,
I'm using ableton live 10 and was wondering if I had this midimix could I save mappings with the devices in ableton and to also save the mapping for any other plugin and can always pull it up with out having to remap everything?
When I plug it in on my computer GarageBand says there is 1 MIDI divice connected but I can’t find it on the MIDI list, does someone know how to fix that?
I wish the knobs were bigger on these things
Great video
Is there a video explaining how to use this with Reaper?
not on my channel!
You are the Ferris Bueller of Gen Z. 😎
encouraging.
Sorry if answer is obvious!
yes! just map a knob to whichever method you are using to change pitch.
Hi! this is helpful and hopeful.
Watched it twice, bought it (midiMix), changed the knobs to higher reach - now i need to start using it 😕
This man speaks eloquently about knobs
great find. But it'd still be a challenge for me to map soft synths like Cherry Audio's Elka-X and MemoryMode. 40 plus buttons, 40 plus knobs and and a few faders.
rarely do i use every function of a device this way! it's just nice to have virtually limitless options with creative mapping in ableton
@@wowflower I get it.
This can use MPC Beats along with Akai mk2 plugged in simultaneously?
if you’re running it through a DAW, yes!
@wowflower So much control. Thank you.
just bought both a LPD 8 and a MIDIMIX for the same reasons shown in the video
entertainment + information... this is how youtube should be
The Black Dog !
What is the proper procedure to make Two Midimix work with Cubase ?
i don’t use cubase so im not sure- but probably just a case of mapping midi how you’d like
