  • Moving can be a chore especially if you have a lot of stuff. Ralph Bacha may have a little more than most because of his chosen profession. Ralph is a professional organist. In his Williamsville home he has four organs. Ralph says with a chuckle "I used to have five but I sold one." His career included stints at Churchill Downs and Shea's. He is the proud owner of a pipe organ built by the Marr & Colton Company around 1927. Ralph says his home was built to house this musical piece of history. Most of the workings of the organ are in the basement. That's where there are two chambers where the pipes are installed. A blower room and all the electronics which Ralph says are "the actual brain to the organ." The maestro has enjoyed playing and maintaining the pipe organ four forty years. As he gets ready to move from his 6500 sqaure foot home to a 1200 square foot home he says he hopes someone who wants the organ will buy the house. If there is an organization that would like this antique that Ralph recovered from Buffalo's former Roosevelt Theatre, he says he would donate it to them. However, it could cost upwards of a $100,000 or more to have the piece removed from the house. Ralph says that this is the second largest pipe organ in New York State, second only to the one at Radio City Music Hall.

I love these old organs, but its definitely not the 2nd largest in the state. There are 5 with over 10,000 pipes. This organ only has about 3,000. I think they mean 2nd largest "theater organ", which is a very specific subcategory. Elmira, and Newburg are probobly the biggest

Not really, even Organ Clearing House has warehouses full of big salvaged organs they cant often sell or give away even for moving costs. They had one sitting in storage 20 years, I think they would up parting it out.

Apparently he them to a retired piano teacher, which means due to HIS age means in a few short years the organ will need a new home yet again when that gy either goes to a nursing home, downsizes or passes away.

While an interesting story the information about the organ’s size being the second largest after Radio City is incorrect. The recently restored 4 manual Aeolian residential pipe organ at the George Eastman House Museum in Rochester, NY is far larger with over 100+ ranks of pipes, probably three times larger than the instrument shown in the news story. Incredibly the Eastman House organ is about two times larger than the organ in Radio City but is designed with a softer volume. The Eastman House organ is played regularly throughout the year.

I could be wrong, but the cadet chapel at West Point houses an 18,000 pipe organ. That would make it much larger than Radio City. Perhaps they were referring to theater organs only. PS, The largest pipe organ in New York City is at Saint Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue with 12,000 pipes.

It would be cheaper to just buy the house and leave the organ inside of it, since he is willing to donate it. I too have several organs, but electronic types that I am restoring. I am just waiting to get a warehouse in the back to store the ones that don't work and needing repairs. I want to make my house into a music store and teaching studio.

It's a theatre organ - doesn't fit the conventional definition of a 'pipe organ'. Something with 3000 pipes couldn't possibly be the second largest.

  • @organbuilder272

This claim of being the 2nd larges it New York - Bullshit. This is a theater organ and highly unified./ It might have a lot of stop tabs but not a lot of real stops. Why do people make such stupid claims. It MIGHT be the 2nd largest THEATER ORGAN in NY but one of the smallest when considering the number of real pipe organs in just the city alone.

A local paper did a story on mine, and the reporter not only took a bunch of photos but they only used TWO of them, and totally screwed up what I said about the music books- they wrote that I travel the world in search of the books when in fact I said I found books all over the world using Google...its a stretch to consider a google search "travelling around the world"

Have to assume that huge Orgo-blo came with the organ and it was sufficient where it was installed, maybe there's a lot of air leaks and poorlyadjusted regulators. Me, I'm not a fan of theater organs, I dont like the console layout or their trems, strings, or traps, I prefer a straight church organ with diapasons, flute stops
