  • I had some things to say about Kate Galvin from season 4 of YOU. I don't know if this is actually considered a character analysis but the phrase popped into my head as I was thinking of a title so that's what we're calling it! I think there was a lot more depth to Kate Galvin aka Katherine Lockwood than it might initially seem, so I thought it would be fun to do this deep dive into her character, the comparisons between Kate and Love Quinn, the parallels between Kate and Joe and where I think she might go in YOU Season 5.
    Let me know what you think about Kate in the comments! I went into this video seeing her one way and as I watched the season again to work on my script, I started seeing her the complete opposite way. So I'd love to know what you think about her character!

      Why do people think she's like her father? The last episode really shows that Joe is more like her father. I also predict that by the end of season 5, Kate will give up on Joe, just like his mother. That is how I feel the series would go down.

    The fact that she didn’t care about Joe killing makes me think she always knew he was a killer and probably knew everything about him way before, just like her father knew every detail about Joe's life.

      I don't know how much Tom actually knew about Joe. Like yeah he suspected Joe killed Love because of the news articles, and he figured out Joe was from New York, but idk if he actually knew every detail. If Tom thought that Joe killed Beck and Love, wouldn't he have just killed Joe to keep his daughter safe so she didn't end up dead?

    • @iAmJoshC
      @iAmJoshC Год назад +22

      To me she didn’t care not because she knew he was a killer, but because she is conscious that she did much worse things in the past , so she feels not in the position to freak out for what Joe did. Also, when you have already witnessed crimes (done by yourself or by your Father) growing up, you start to process them in a different way. She deals with Joe’s crimes like she would like someone to deal with hers : not judgement or forgiveness .

      @@cinekizzle you'd hope/think, but Tom also said he paid away Malcom's sexual assault charge and Kate didn't even know such a thing happened. Tom claimed he did it because he made her happy. So I don't think he cares about the morality of these men who date his daughter, only his daughter's safety and happiness and even if she's dating a dangerous guy, Tom CONSTANTLY has tabs on her so I don't think he would let something happen. It sounds backwards but I mean dude hiding SA from your daughter is pretty extreme too. He's a backwards guy.

    Kate is a very well written character. The epitome of subtlety and nuance. I adore writing that’s not easily discernible. Kate is the ultimate power. She sent Joe to kill her father, just like she knew her father would kill Phoebe’s deplorable husband. She’s a woman who possesses an extremely high intelligence and an uncanny amount of self awareness and control. She’s a chess master. She tried to be different but she ultimately succumbed to her inherent nature. She’s Joe. 1 percent Joe.

    I do think revisiting the time at Hampsie is interesting. Although Kate is visibly disgusted by Gemma's actions for the croquet game, instead of fixing it, she just leaves. Yes she's the most vocal out of the group but she doesn't actively do anything to stop it, she simply makes some comments and leave. Definitely a hint at what she's willing to do/stand up for.

      What I found interesting about that scene was that Kate only talked to Phoebe - the one person (apart from Joe) who was visibly upset by Gemma's behaviour. I think she didn't step in or say anything out loud in front of everyone else because she knew the consequence of it would've been the elites calling her out for "acting" like she cares for the "lower class", with the possibility of bringing up her status and father as a result - something that wouldn't be revealed until later down the line, and on her own terms as well.

    I think there is a high possibility she is evil. She didn't really shed a tear for Malcolm. She moved on to Joe super quick. She was way to comfortable with moving her friends body. The way she looks through him and pretend to not be interested is giving Love when we find out she had her eyes on him all along. I She been observing. I think she wanted Malcom dead and her father. Her childhood bestie is Roald who is crazy birds of a feather. She is smarter and more level headed than Love. Joe is too self obsessed to notice and he underestimates women. I think she choses him because he is just as delusional as her in thinking they are good people. I could be wrong but idk that's my theory anyway.

    • @cinekizzle

      Well the not crying over Malcolm thing seemed to be the result of surpressing her emotions for years because her mother made her. And moving Gemma's body, the way I see it is that she compartmentalized what was happening in order to keep her dad from finding out because if he found out, her life would be hell. He'd hold that dirt over her head forever.

  • @euodiaclitterhouse4726

    She is reaaaaaaally hard to enjoy as a character. And she is definitely evil. Kate is exactly like her father & she's brilliant at playing the victim (like many of her ilk).
    Not ONCE did I ever get a decent vibe from her. I have no time for her type that complain and whine about their parents and the lofty 1% life they have been given, but live their lives in the exact same way. Did she speak up when Gemma was abusing the staff? No. But she did immediately respond to finding her murdered corpse with the instinct to cover it up. Her own "friend", after her bf was killed. She wasn't worried about catching the killer, she wasn't worried about disturbing the crime scene, nothing. Just her Daddy getting too protective. She is also abusive towards staff that her father hired to protect her, no thought to how they are more vulnerable than she is as his employees. She basically continued to cover up Simon Soo's crimes with a pay off. She knew Malcolm was cheating but I am not sure if she knew it was with his own students, which is hardcore abuse of power. But! She has no trouble being rude and hateful to strangers that she doesn't trust yet.
    She is a cold blooded killer anyway. She said not only did she give those kids cancer, she felt NOTHING when she found out. She is worried for her own soul (like Joe) but not the lives of others.
    Love was also spoiled with "killer" instincts. But at least she honest about who she was, why she did the things she did, and was honest about how messy she is. She was Joe's equal but he was still in denial about it. He killed her, justifying it as he always does, without accepting the hypocrisy. Now that he has Kate's support $$ he is worse than Love ever was...
    GOD this show went downhill after we lost Victoria Pedretti. We did not get ANY likable characters this season with the possible exception of Phoebe. They didn't give us enough of Nadia to really care for her until the very end, unfortunately. Missed opportunity to really build her to be likable.

      But this show isn't about being likable while still being a murderer. Love wasn't so loved by the audience because she she was likeable due to being a poor troubled girl with killer instincts but because that made her an interesting character and gave us great dynamics together with Joe. And how you describe Kate makes her the perfect match for "the new" Joe. Love was the perfect match when he was still in denial about his true nature and wanted to have a normal life but now that he faced his real self and is "utilizing 100%" of him, while publicly still acting all innocent and and doing anything for the greater good. IMO he fits perfectly to the hypocrisy of Kate who now can also utilize 100% of her power (her fathers money) to do 'good'.

    It's the same pattern over and over, he pursues women who come from broken families, they're easier to manipulate. He projects on to them and when they fall short of his expectations, he starts resenting them and ofc eventually finds a new woman to obsess over and stalk. Beth was normal, love was a serial killer, Marianne was normal, Kate is definitely not normal, she does know that he killed Rhys, she decides to hide that. Imo, she's going to be much worse than Love. She sits right next to him as he spews bs and lies. The fact that Kate never really did separate from her father, didn't stop being friends with some of the worst people tells me all I need to know. It's the typical Serena van der woodsen thing that she just happens to be friends with the worst people and she can't leave them and become better fr. Kate loves the drama as does Joe.

    Out of Joe's love interests, she intrigued me the most. I'm not entirely sure why, but she was very aware of him and I liked that. It interested me, so I suppose that's why. However, this season did what I always wanted for his character, and that was for him to accept who he is, while finding "The One" for him. Now, I do hope she is the last love interest of his because it's getting old at this point, but I wonder if his new obsession will be to kill, and not stalking and indulging in other woman, kind of like a Dexter-type situation, if that makes any sense. That's my prediction for what'll happen in season five, and the ending scene definitely makes me think that is a possibility. I mean, she did tell him something he's always needed to hear, so I hope she is the last and he doesn't betray her in the way he did with Love. But, alas, it is Joe. He'll probably do something that let's all hell break loose. Though, if they are partners in crime, that would be interesting to see. And not like what he did with Love, because Kate doesn't seem to have murderous intentions, but she could help Joe cover it up, unless he wants to do so himself for the thrill of it. I just can't wait to see more of this series.

    Finally an analysis of Kate, I was waiting for one! So first of all I think you pictured and sorted out her motives very well. I also was fascinated by her during the show but also find her will to be good to be very shaky and hypocrite through out the show. Also I was never able to shake off the feeling that she was behind all the murders and texting Joe. While I don’t believe she’s behind the first ETR murders, I still believe she somehow knows it’s been Joe (hence she’s smart as they come) and totally making use of it the moment she confides Joe with everything her father’s done to her. Even if that wasn’t true it still says a lot about her, that she gives off such an attitude.
    Regarding Joe I think what draws her to him is that he not only supports her in her inherent wish to be good but also repeatedly assured her that she’s good, and that she’s doing good. While the others (Malcolm/Roald) only see her as one of themselves, exactly what she doesn’t want to be, Joe gives her the feeling that she truly is different from them because she’s not mindless and egoistic and money/status driven like them.
    Also what speaks for her having a dark side is that even though she never started sth with Roald they‘re very close when he’s the most likely of the rich to kill and she knows it and accepts it and she does so with Joe.
    I also payed attention to her choice of name and was quite surprised when she gave the interview in the last scene as Katherine Lockwood, which in my view only gave in more into her hypocrite will to be good.
    So for Season 5 I could either see conflict in that she discovers what Joe‘s done and even though I think she could accept the past, I could Imagine her not excepting that he went on lying (or not telling) after that one point when she said be truthful from now on and also when she finds out he killed her father. BUT since I think she actually knows anyways about the killings I could also see them to team up and kill together. 1st it would be different from what we‘ve seen before (with Love it was not that they decided to work together they were more pressured to do so by the circumstances). Whereas I could totally see that they team up in the name of doing good, Joe goes on killing for what she thinks needs to be done for the greater good. And in that way she always assures that he’s worse than her, making her always the better one but also she can justify his actions by claiming they‘re for the greater good.
    So this motive of being good but being totally hypocrite about it (which also is why the both of them match so well) will be the endgame and they might go down together or she’ll lose interest if she finds a way to be even better without him (but never forget she likes her boys tortured and dark).

    Wow I just realized something about Kate. The entire 2 part seasons she was wearing very neutral colors. Blue, beige. Black, white, etc,. But at the very, very end, after Joe is in the hospital, and also the very last scene, she is wearing red. And I really am now starting to think that the fashion designer did this intentionally. I don't recall her wearing red at any other time during the show, but I could be wrong. And red is associated with boldness, power, sexy, bad, "evil". And considering she took over her father's role (who is a bad, powerful man), it's kind of fitting and maybe foreshadowing the type of person she feels free to really be. I can guarantee that she already knew about all of Joe's past once he was admitted in the hospital before she got there, and I can bet she understands and knows ALL of the details to his past and still is fine with it? And helped him twist it into a story that could be sold to the whole world to make him look like a good guy? I feel like she's truly more evil than Joe is

The color of her outfits is limited. though she wore red outfits in 3 scenes: the first one when she touched herself, then the engagement party, and the interview scene. For me, it feels like she’s wearing red when she is not afraid to express herself, like touching herself with windows open, stopping Phoebe from marrying Adam, and introducing herself as the heir of her father’s wealth. She's also worn green on Joe's first night at Sundry House and on her first date with Joe. The color of her outfit also reminds me of Mae's Martin jokes about not wearing the red hoodie on Feel Good. When I watched your You show & book comparison, I knew I recognized you, haha. This is the video I've had pop up before in search results! But I neglected to watch it until now.
    Man, I loved this video way more than I thought I would. I noticed this in the other video that I watched as well, but your ability to recollect a vast amount of details is incredible! How many times do you watch the season before you make a video about it? Or do you quickly retouch on key moments that you remember?
    Anywho, you're the only person that sees what I see in Kate! The show sort of implies that she's Joe's best match by having her be a direct parallel to him, and a lot of people would be wrong to say that would be Love- Exhibit A: Season 3. Joe doesn't need someone like Love, he needs someone like himself!
    Your observation that Joe is now Love and that Kate is now Joe is remarkable! I think the show will explore Kate being the woman she wants to be, the humane person that audiences can still relate to. Because if she becomes evil, then the final season will have to be about taking down a major power couple, when the show is about Joe. I think Joe will basically be dealing with the issues Love had, making bad decisions, making messes, letting his dark emotions do all the talking. And then Kate (playing the role Joe did in S3), will have to be the one cleaning up those messes, but instead of cheering it on or enabling it, she'll try to "keep him good", as they say. And then eventually as part of the conclusion of the season/series, she'll have to accept that the monster can't be tamed, lives will continue to be lost or ruined, and the patter will just never stop. Meaning she'll be the one to lock the cage in some shape or form, out of love and care for him and everyone else he could hurt, a position that she could've also been in.
    Excellent video! Subscribed!

    Likely evil. Not naïve. She is doing what she wants to do entirely. She reads people very well and she has a history of picking romantic relationships with people who have a dark side. Im sure it is so she can manipulate them into doing things she doesn’t want to directly be tied to.Ñ. Like the Love situation, we really have been seeing her through his eyes until he gets a wake up call. Love said it before that it was all right in front of him but he just wants to stay wrapped up in his fantasy. I think the same is true here. I think the next season we will see what Kate’s dad said come true in that she drives all her boyfriends away herself. That probably happens because she uses them as scapegoats when she doesn’t want to deal with herself. She said so before that she always wanted the business. She just didn’t want any kind of truth (her dad) reminding her of anything she doesn’t want to think about. Joe likes to make it seem as though he wants good girls, but good girls always die (or at least have to appear dead in order to survive). It’s the ones that don’t mind violence (Love and now Kate) that seem to be a problem. Even though he is whole with his killer and kind sides, I wonder what will happen when they aren’t able to keep each other good. Maybe they will even bring his son back into the storyline.

    This is a pretty solid take!
    There's definitly a pattern of self justification in her plus her willingness to let slide a lot of misdeeds for those who show her only a little bit of affection definitly works against her and if Joe's patterns are any indicator it will be her dowfall at his hand.
    But it will be intersting to see a Joe who is no longer running from the psychopath that he was all along. With his newfound wealth and inflence I can see him being more methodical in his use of violence and if S5 is to be the last one then he will probably dig himself into a hole too deep to escape from and Kate and her family empire might not survive it.
    I like how this show constantly reinvents itself while retaining a continuity and it will only be fitting that all of Joe's actions have consequences in the end.

    Idk I’m kinda rooting for Kate at this point, I want her to do good and be good, she’s definitely the most intriguing character of S4 so far to me personally.
    Also I feel like she’s not gonna be that easily manipulated by Joe if he intends to murder people and her covering for him, she’s been raised into this "criminal" lifestyle so she’s got a good read on these kind of behaviors
    I think she’s gonna end up outsmarting him and probably kill him that’s just a hunch of mine I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

      I'm not sure. I think she doesn't know because she said her dad being killed for money was karmic, which leads me to think she does believe his bodyguard killed him, not Joe. Between the hospital scene and the interview at the end, it's possible that he told her but I think he would probably tell her as little as possible.

    Just based on the way she is styled in the last scene, I think they are priming her to be a villain. She’s wearing red and she has this very triangular silhouette which is often associated with evil characters. That combined with the fact that she seems to be wearing a power suit (reminiscent of the hyper capitalist work culture of the 80s) and her shoulder pads point up at the ends, almost like little devil horns. Plus, this show has a tendency to lean into political commentary (especially critiques of capitalism) so I think we may see more of that next season as we watch her power corrupt her.

    Though we don't have the scene, it is implied that Joe told her everything about his life and she accepts it, which is a massive red flag. Joe can't see it because having a good person who understands his way and doesn't judge him for it is his life goal. But the truth is, in my opinion, you can't be a good person if you think Joe is a good person too (or you have the nurse syndrome which is another kind of red flag, and doesn't seem to be the case lf Kate anyway). So the fact that she stayed with him even if she knows say something. Either she is evil, either she is pretending for whatever reason.
    Also the last scene gives me "triumphant evil rich people" vibes from both of them.

    • @cinekizzle
      @cinekizzle  Год назад +1

      idk, people keep saying this but I don't know why we're all of a sudden believing he told her the truth, the whole truth? Like we were explicitly shown Marienne getting on the train and that turned out to not have happened so when she says "What do I need to know about your past?" and he tells her his name and then we don't see anything else he told her, maybe I missed something but I personally just don't have good reason to believe he actually told her much of anything. What does she NEED to know about his past? I think he can very easily justify leaving out A LOT by thinking she doesn't *need to know* it all.

    I think Kate was raised in a way that now nothing really scares her or surprises her, she has a strong character, she didn’t even lose it when she saw Gemma had been killed and she had not any reaction when Joe told her he had to kill Rhys. I don’t think she is evil (she was in the past and she is now willing to make up for her mistakes) , it would be kinda redundant to have another evil girlfriend after Love Quinn.(so far we have always seen different types of girlfriends) Unless she is evil but in other respects, so she doesn’t kill anyone but she is far from being a morally right person in all the things related to her business, her company etc. Anyways I hope this time we won’t have always the same patterns “relationship issues etc”, I actually hope Joe and Kate will get along well and the season will focus on some other type of threats/problems

    • @cinekizzle
      @cinekizzle  Год назад

      yeah that's one reason why I think she's not evil either, they'd just be repeating the Love story a little bit. I think someone had mentioned that Penn alluded to their relationship not lasting in season 5 but I don't know where he would have said that or if that could change.

    • @iAmJoshC
      @iAmJoshC Год назад

      @@cinekizzle i don't know where or or when Penn might have said that either. I think Penn knows how It Will end in the final episode, but he can't know the rest of the screenplay yet, so whatever he said it's Just his personal thought/Hope i believe. I don't know, maybe he said this referring to a not Happy ending for Joe in season 5 last episode, That's why he said It won't last with Kate, but not because they Will have relationship problems during the season. I also think that It would not be a great move now to split from Kate since She Is very powerful, She knows what he did and She has so many resources to help him in anything. I really Hope Joe won't find another feminine source of obsession at this point. By the way I am Reading some comments of people saying they never liked Kate at all, I Actually loved her character since her First scene instead Lol. What's your opinion on this?

      i could also see them team up to kill in the name and work together and finally they’ll get brought down or just slip to an anonymous life but I don’t see him kill her as I also don’t see her being so innocent, i still can see a plot twist coming revealing her behind the murders somehow (actually scheming joe into the killings or sth) but that would probably give her a bigger role than Joe so that’s unlikely but she’s just too smart to not see all the death around him and not connecting it
