Thank you Emerson. Your live and respect book helped my marriage when I was desperate and now again hopefully will help me with my teenage sons....one who is very much like his father, but both who need respect and to be believed in.

Listening to this episode and now listening to Dr. Eggerich’s audiobook I am in tears. Hard to explain but I am broken yet excited that this is exactly what I need to hear. Thank you! I am on my way and with God’s help I know that my relationship and communication with my boys will improve.

BOOM! You nailed it and I have failed it...I wish I had understood this 20 years ago. I feel hope that with God's help there can be a closeness with my son again. Thankyou.

You can do it. Keep reaching out. Parents always have a place in their kids’ heart. Even when they are distant and grown up, they still think of you and need you!

You did it gain Dr. Eggerichs! First, with your Love and Respect book. Now, with applying this to young men. I do not have any children. I am a teacher and this lit a light bulb in me in how I need to approach my male students. They are 5th graders, but, at this age, they are becoming independent young men. I often feel I don't connect with male students the same as I do with my female students and what you are mentioning is making me realize why..Great work Focus on the Family! Thank you for all the wonderful work you do.

I think most of the FOF stuff has a similar problem: word salad
I was taught a strong man ought to say in a look that what lesser ones will need a treatise
“You didn’t do your chores and I think you’re honorable and it’s a dishonorable thing to do what you did and I don’t want…”
My grandparents solved that with 5words: “Ain’t your word a bond?”

This is hard. How do you say "I respect you" when they are not earning it? What happened to the principle of earning respect? It seems phony to say I respect you when they've just stolen money from your purse and when caught they curse you???

Don’t blame yourself for that. You deserve respect from your son, and you can’t make him respect you by submitting to him.

You love and respect unconditionally. Doesn't mean you enable, but kids who act out like this are missing love and attention

  • @massiefamily7229

We are to respect each other as human beings yes - but sons need to respect their mothers authority. Women need respect just as much as men. Saying that men need it more is reductionist and divisive at best and poor exegesis of what Paul is addressing at worst (he was responding to Greco-Roman household codes). Also there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with saying you do it because I told you too at times, and enacting consequences for not doing things like chores, etc. Yes we are to move from control to freedom but this is not a male female thing.
