If I were teaching how to play this tune, I would do it exactly like you did and try to explain how important to get the awesome F chord down. You're absolutely right.... it literally MAKES the song! In fact, that F chord opened a lot of new musical pathways for my playing. I went ape shyt trying to figure out why that F wasn't just a regular barred F chord like I had seen so many of my customers play while doing HB (I run a guitar repair shop). I could hear how amazing Mick's F chord was, but it was SO fkn subtle. You really had to listen closely. Nice job pointing that out my friend!
Really glad the way you emphasized repeatedly how it's that Fsus2 that makes the song. It really does. It's the thing you listen for; makes it special. Otherwise it's a somewhat boring 7-4-1. Rock does this all the time. Another really great example of a sus2 making a song is "Limelight" by Rush. You originally learn just B, A-A, E and it sounds ok, but you sort of know something is missing. Then many years later you learn it's B, Asus2-Asus2, E! And the whole song comes alive. Without it, it's a mostly boring 1-7-4. Anyway you nailed the timbre and chord voicings. Thank you for showing how one note in a chord can make the whole song!
You can absolutely hear the open G in both chords and the F with the open G is definitely what brings the whole riff to life. You're the first person I've seen that does this. It's so killer when you hear it within the context of the song.
I remember when I first discovered this channel I was just looking for more AC/DC covers to learn 😂. I saw most of the AC/DC covers and now I’m Angus Young clearly lol. Keep on rocking James James your content is awesome rock on 🤘 🎸
Love your channels. This and your lesson on the open G part to this song are super fun parts made easy to learn. Thanks! I am learning a lot from you and having a great time doing so.
Another brilliant one James! Thank you so much. Always loved the superb taste that Mick Jones contributed to Foreigner . Lou was so special also. Lou and Mick were brilliant! Thanks so very much for sharing this one James 🌌🌠🕊👌
Yes indeed Mick was brilliant with his chords and awesome bending leads that blended so well with Lou Gramm on vocals! Al Greenwood on keyboards, was solid to their original sound and likeability. Used to go crazy and crank up Foreigner tunes back when friends were like wha? Great band and great times with Foreigner tunes from yesterday!
You are 100% right on this one ! … there is a unique sound on those verse chords that a typical bar can’t work. I agree that’s it’s the key to this one sounding right. Great job breaking it down.
I am so glad you are back to just slamming out videos again! I rarely have anything to add to your lessons because we kinda have the same ear but I know you are a stickler for ergonomics. In the verse I have always went from my F to an open C position. You can grab the F on the high E with your first finger and have some other basic fun there and slide right back to the thumbed G. I have always thought it rang more and hit harder but you can try it out.
I hear it this way too. The regular barre chord sounds to “clean” I guess. That f with the open g has some bite to it. I need to trust myself more I guess lol. Great lesson as always
Very good JJ. the only one who I see is another one who I trust for fairly accurate lessons through The years outside of Lexington Kentucky Dale the tone Doctor who actually played with a band called The Lexington lab and did some Foreigner. He did a pretty good lesson on this finding a unique tone. But I agree so many other ones out here think they know what they're doing but they don't have a clue.
Hey James, I remember awhile back that you liked JD Simo as one of your top current guitar players. What do you think of his music from the Simo albums?
I think you heard it right. Also, my thumb is not capable of that move on that chord, so I have to reach up and play the "thumb note" with my middle finger.
@@jamesjames9275 omg I was just looking at a 4 by 10 and a 2 by 12 both are 500 I think there from the early 90s I love bassman sound so I think im gonna go for the 4 x 10
Awesome. I agree that that chord is the one that makes the song. I think it is a Fsus2, only because I just learned it or something like it for another song (Unbroken Chain) that I was working on.
Hey James, James, Frankie Panek, I think they’re doing it even simpler than what you’re doing. Why don’t you send me some contact information? You’re an awesome guitar player and I’ve been playing for 45 years. I used to be a rock ‘n’ roll star singer songwriter you know all the bullshit I hate the music industry but anyway, there’s an easier way to play that I wanna show you and it will blow your mind when you see it
Its not to fast, you just gotta put in more time to learn what he’s saying. You can always slow the video down too. Learning anything especially the guitar takes time. I’m only a beginner myself but I already know this to be true, and what I said can apply to anything in life

Great lesson! I'm 64 and remember when it came out. Summer job in college and this was on the radio all the time - good memories!
That early FOREIGNER is brilliant in your face and radio friendly. MICK JONES was a cool dude with some serious talent.

The guitar solo on this tune is one of Mick’s best and an all-time rock classic. 👌🏻🎸
No Doubt! Reminds me of Ace Frehley's Strange Ways solo off Hotter Than Hell
This song and I'll get even with you is a real good one filled with juicy notes

Agreed sounds way better that way. But the other way is great for beginners to rock out
It so refreshing to see someone else yous their pinkie for bare chords:)) Thanks for the GREAT lesson brother:) Rock On James!
That chord is spot on. Thank you.
Excellent post work homework assignment! Going to jam on this one over the weekend!
Your ears are dead on per usual, James. I hear it your way too. 👍🏼😎
So awesome. Thank you so much sir!

Good job! Especially about the open G-string F money-chord. I can totally hear it in the studio version.
I think you nailed it. Nice job.
Yes! You are so right! Thank you!!
Love the scratch of that open G chord, James! 👍🎸👍
So many song I'm eager to learn - did you ever see the Tommy Emmanual version of Classical Gas = out the ball park
Brilliant! EXACTLY right!
Love Foreigner, thanks James!

Great call on the Fsus2!
Hey learned something new! That sounds great with the open g
Love this song and that's an awesome guitar.🎸🎸
great chord voicings and approach!
you always play so perfectly
Your way is the correct way 👍🙏
"Thunderbolt and lightning very, very frightening me!" Simo is coming to Portland in November. I look forward to it.
Awesome thanx for sharing
Thanks for the video snd I agree 100%!!
SIMO! Outstanding.
"Funky cold Madina"--reference -true & funny
Really appreciate your ear!
Agree with you 100%
Awesome video...thanks!
you are correct.......
too bad you couldn't fit some more pickups in there. Love your videos. I hear what you hear, but I also hear voices.
Hey James, I remember awhile back that you liked JD Simo as one of your top current guitar players. What do you think of his music from the Simo albums?
i gotta agree. the open g on the f chord is bitchin. makes it.
Thanks for this.
Top stuff as usual!
The magical chord is what I would call Fadd9. What would you call it?
I think you heard it right. Also, my thumb is not capable of that move on that chord, so I have to reach up and play the "thumb note" with my middle finger.
Definitely a G
👍👍
came for hot blooded, stayed for the killer les paul custom
Got the deal of a lifetime on that guitar.
Love the shirt!
perfect
Yep. 👍
Guess that I really need to work on the thumb over the top technique!
hey it's been a while since you've done a cover, i miss those
I’ve probably done 1,500 demo videos on this channel. If you’ve learned them all, I’m impressed.
@@jamesjames9275 just saying because you make me discover new music or bands
However, I doubt Mick played the F on the 6th string. Most guitar players would leave that to the bass player.
Just wandering, your on a clean channel cranked right? any kind of clean pedals on top?
No pedals, just some gain from the amp. It’s a Peavey Classic 50.

Sure, you can play it with triads. But if you watch Mick play it, he’s not using just the triads.
Why not watch original foreigner performance and play it their way?
You must be new here.
I need the tab or chord shapes it's too fast for me to learn
I hope you can find a RUclips channel that teaches at your pace.
