    Nice video, though it would have been better if it clearly showed what the positive terminal actually looks like, because it doesn't look like any terminal I've ever used before! It's a solid blade of metal with a reflective mirror finish held in place by a plastic mount that exposes it on one side only. Hooking up a booster cable clamp to it feels really weird, because a) one side of the cable is clamped against the back side of the plastic housing, and b) the blade is so thin it doesn't feel like it has much to grab on to, and indeed it can fall off easily if you're not careful. It would also have been much more realistic if it had shown some sparking when the final terminal was connected; this is almost inevitable, and could surprise someone who doesn't know to expect it. But, this video is the only documentation I've been able to find so far on jump starting involving RAV4 Hybrids. Thanks for making it :-)

      I read your text and and found out I had to touch the top of the blade. That's when I notice my other vehicle idle went down a little. Just enough to make that little spark to assure the connection was made. Success! My wife didn't have to walk to work. 1 Mile!!!

    I have a 2022 RAV 4 cruiser and the battery dead suddenly couldn't open the back booth. Called Toyota they sent a technician who went through the rear door and jumpstarted the car, luckily under warranty no charges

    had to jump start my wife's 2016 hybrid, just make sure the positive clamp is touching the positive terminal in the fuse box, if your clamp is having difficulty you can pop the trunk and get access to the actual battery by just taking some plastic pieces out of the bottom trunk. The hybrid has 2 batteries one that powers the car and one for the ignition/turning on the car, the one that powers the car lasts 5-10 years, the one that powers the ignition is a 12 volt battery and lasts about 3 years, I bought a 12 v battery from the dealer for $200 you can probably buy it cheaper at autozone, you just have to make sure it has a hose port since this battery requires you to reconnect a hose to the battery. I replaced the battery in the trunk and now the car starts normally.

      @cashmonyz 5 лет назад

      note: the dealer wanted to charge 400 for battery+labor so I saved about 200 in labor, but you can prob save more by buying the 12v battery from autozone or Walmart if they have it

      @@cashmonyz it’s only a size of a powerbank. It can jumpstart non-hybrid vehicles by connecting it to the 12v battery. I was wondering if that can be done too in a hybrid.

      Never jump start another vehicle from a hybrid. Hybrid battery is too small for this. It is only used to run the electronics of the hybrid. It is ok to get a jump start, but if somebody asks you to jump start from it, tell them that its a hybrid and battery is not designed forr this and will damage systerm.

      You shouldn't jump start another vehicle with a hybrid one, unless the other vehicle is another hybrid

      Engineer and mechanic here, go ahead and start a motorcycle everyday with your 12-volt battery on your hybrid, a motorcycle takes a lot less cranking amps to start than a car. Motorcycle manufacturers recommend that if you jump start the bike from a car, that the car is off, because the car will put out too many amps. I've had plenty of vehicles and motorcycles too, so I actually know what I'm talking about instead of pulling something from between the cheeks and presenting it as fact chastising another person for actually doing the right thing. You definitely want to be right when correcting someone as this spreads misinformation. I've been wrong once or twice before so I'm not speaking from a high horse. Hopefully this helps you, all the best.

    But can we jump start another vehicle with the RAV4 hybrid? Im getting mixed answers

    • @1nathanlynch
      @1nathanlynch 4 года назад +2

      Yes, you can. I have jumpstarted several non-hybrid vehicles with my RAV4 hybrid. The only difference is the order of the connections in the video above, it is slightly changed since your RAV4 is supplying the power, not drawing the power. Connect the dead battery vehicle first, then expose the positive connection on your RAV4 hybrid in the fuse box. Be careful to make connection on the center of the post, with your cables as it is pretty narrow and if you have cheap cables, without a side that sticks out more, you could damage the connection. When all connections are good, start the RAV4 (I usually leave mine running while I jump) slowly increase throttle speed for as long as needed to charge the other battery to starting power.

    The warranty has been 100k or 10yrs since at least my 2007 prius. The problem is that Toyota doesn't honor it. The warranty doesn't say how bad the battery must be before they would replace it. My 07 prius with 65k mi had no power and mpg reduced to around 30mpg, but the battery management could still charge it some so Toyota said no. I had to buy it myself to get back power and milage in the high 40s. Toyota doesn't participate in the BBB so you're screwed. No honor with toyota.

      Good to know. It will be interesting to see what happens with other EV and hybrid batteries. Acceptable limits should be told to the consumer and a pro-rated scheme.

      I had a similar experience. I had to push an extra boost button on the booster battery to get it working. Luckily the device actually had such a button. My guess is that the issue is the considerable delay between the hybrid initializing all the systems that draw power and when it actually engages the starter motor.

      @@mascot4950 Didn't have to jumpstart my Rav4 Hybrid yet, but with my regular ICE Mazdas the same thing happens. I have to press the booster button lets' say 70% of time I try to jumpstart them. Not sure sure if the problem resides. My guess is the detection system in the jumpstarters themselves.

    Hybrids don't have an alternator like most cars with a 12-volt system. Hybrids have an AC/DC converter that takes electrical AC power and uses the AC power through an inverter to utilize battery power in your car. That is why you shouldn't jump an alternator car with one that has an AC/DC converter. Could cause catastrophic damage to the hybrid car electrical system. Is this true?

    • @silverleapers
      @silverleapers 8 месяцев назад

      Yes. We done it and now have all the warning lights up on the dash. Grrrr. F-ing owner's manual had NO warnings. Guessing you mean the DC to DC converter (there is no AC-DC inverter being discussed in the video link you provided). The main battery is 245VDC in the Hybrid whereas the system in other cars is like 12-14VDC (and so is the auxiliary battery in the trunk of some toyota hybrid models, ie a normal lead acid car battery).
