@@bbpoisonn He doesn't. He has small developments here and there, but he does not develop at all, and if you think he does I would say you haven't read one piece. His goals have remained the same, his feelings have remained the same, he is pretty much the exact same person he is now as he was in chapter 1. What luffy does have, is character progression. His character progresses further and further to get to his goal. He doesn't develop, he progresses
this is such a throwback to when i first read one piece as well, it really only gets better as you read more into it! vv excited to see Connor’s journey diving into one piece, one of my favs
Great to see him finally getting into it. I wouldn't say that Oda was finding it hard to find his calling to whether it was dark or more comedic and I think his intention was always to display both because that's life; you need the dark to see the light, and the crew's smiles are that light.
It's easy to oversee just how good of a character Luffy is, especially at the beginning. You have to watch really closely and read sometimes between the lines. But he develops non-stop and also shows wisdom even though he smiles and laughs all time, taking it easy. You definitely notice these little moments easily on re-read. As for example of these little moments in the beginning: 1) Luffy not wanting to hear Nami's past, because her past doesn't matter to him, only she herself does and he knows what kind of a person she is, he simply lives in the present 2) Luffy not immediately jumping into action once he made it to Cocoyashi village. He WAITED until Nami herself asked him for help, because he doesn't want to force his help on someone who obviously has their own reasons and they're personal and have nothing to do with him or the crew (unlike Robin's in water 7). This is one of many things that makes him different from your usual goody-two-shoes protagonist with hero complex. 3) Listening to Vivi in Drum and bowing his head instead of raging and fighting. This was an important lesson to Luffy how to be a better leader. 4) His ability to adapt and be creative while fighting and such e.g. Arlong Park and the pinwheel, but there's ofc more instances 5) Drum, the climb up the mountain. This was one of his best moments for sure, the determination and love he showed for his crewmates was incredible. Of course there's more, but I'd be here all day 😭😂 I definitely understand that not everyone sees this and Connor's takes are definitely valid for a first-time reader who is currently only on the Drum arc. I myself started seeing these little moments only after my second read and watch of one piece and now, that I did so, so many many times throughout the years that I'm a fan,...Luffy has become my number one. Also...Luffy is definitely really strong at the beginning, but we all know when that changes and how big of an impact that change has and how much he struggles against his first truly strong opponent. When I first saw that first round against Croco, him impaling Luffy just like that, I literally gasped and worried about him, as if I forgot that the series is so long lol. I was simply shocked to see our sunny protagonist who's fights were always so far "relatively easy" to get defeated like that. Either way, I wish Connor only the best on his One piece journey and I hope his enjoyment of the series only grows ❤️🙏
in the anime, you don't get the flashback till like the 800 episodes it makes sense to not understand luffy even though the arks build him, and get you ready for the flashback.
@@Akilla02 That's why I said it's easy to oversee it on the first read/watch through and that Connor's points are valid for a newbie and a someone who's only on Drum arc. Luffy gets first flashback in chapter one, in the anime it's episode 4 I think and then the ASL flashback is somewhere around 490th episode. Luffy is intended to be written like this, on a first look, simple cheerful guy that say and does what he has in mind or in his heart, but he's also the genius when it comes to people and battle, someone who doesn't share about himself that much aside from his dream and love for his crew and meat. It's like that and it's genius.
Completely agree with you. I have seen so many people saying that Luffy is just another shonen protagonist, and there's nothing special about him, but when you dig deeper into his character, there are so many amazing details. Out of all animes I have watched, he’s definitely my favorite MC.
The moment I knew he would be my favorite character of all time was the “Shut up, Let’s go” scene. I read it when I was young and it hit me so hard as a child.
I mean if he gives it a 7/10 this early on then we gonna have to increase the count from out of 10 to out of 50. Keen af to hear his thoughts after Skypiea and especially Water 7
Quite interesting to hear his commentary especially about which parts dragged on. I felt like the Little Garden arc certainly dragged on but was relatively manageable compared to Skypiea
Been waiting a long time for this. After hearing Connor's thoughts it really makes me excited to hear more thoughts after Enies Lobby in particular. Especially because of his opinion of Usopp as well as Luffy. I do find it interesting that he seems to prefer Baratie over Arlong Park. I am also interested to see what he thinks of Chopper's backstory. :)
just a head's up: you gotta show connor the 1. german opening of one piece. "die legende" is just a straight up banger and I'm sad that it is not known anywhere but in GER.
If you love the first opening, then definitely watch the 4th "Karte des Herzen". Still my absolute favourite german opening. Man im getting goosebumbs xD
Now I just wish you could have a little interview with him after every major arc. It’s always so much fun to seen what different people think about one piece on their first read/watch-thru
Sanjis backstory was amazing....and we're all sitting here like, yeh thats only half the backstory...Connor has so much to look forward to really makes me realise how far OP has come. I haven't rewatched the early episodes in ages...
Finally Connor started One Piece journey well all I can say is at the end of completing this journey he is going to love it as much he loves JOJO for sure!!!
Omg I’m so happy Connor actually started reading One Piece and you could tell he meant it!! I can’t wait for his OP videos lolllll I’d love to see his reaction to Alabasta and Marineford😭😭😭
i was still a kid back when zoro declared to luffy that he will never lose again and i teared up, i felt strong emotions that i didn't understand. To this day, 2 decades later i still don't understand this specific emotion that this scene invoked in me..
I fully get Connors critique that Luffy feels too OP at the start, but I also think it speaks well to how developed he is as a character, this is a character who spent 10 years training because he knows hes gonna have to be strong, hes got his devil fruit which is already a big advantage, but it overall sets up that hes already surpassed the sea he grew up in, but that ultimately wont mean much when he gets to the Grand Line It also sets Luffy apart from a lot of Shonen protags, who are more often more similar to Coby, who I see as Luffy's narrative opposite on a parallel path within the Navy Starting out really underdeveloped and then they develop as they progress Whereas Luffys development takes place in the 10 years between when Shanks leaves and when Luffy leaves Super glad Connors finally on this im excited to hear more of what hes got to say about it Also fun fact, both JoJo and Baki are longer than One Piece Though JoJo mightve been passed since I learned this. JoJo has more overall pages and Baki straight up has 1283 chapters altogether I only bring up Baki cause I know the boys fuck with it
I remember watching One Piece for the 1st time as a teen and bruh, I can't wait to see Connor's opinion to the Arabasta Arc, to me that it's the exact point where the story goes "Oh shit, this is serious".
I just started watching trash taste like a week ago, what a coincidence. I really feel like Connor is missing out not watching the anime though, it took me months to catch up on but it was totally worth it. He'll miss out on the amazing music, the iconic and funny voices, and the cool fights.
The way Connor is getting into One Piece reminds me of when he first started Jojo I just hope since it’s so much bigger that he can still manage to experience it fresh and spoiler free which is the real challenge
Seeing the One piece progression and determination it displays is really special for me. I thought i would never like it, but shit motivates me and shits makes me cry real shit
I feel like the comment about Luffy that Connor made was perfectly valid and quite interesting for all of us who are caught up. He's always portrayed as a daunting figure in the east blue and in fairness all the training he did before sailing out would make sense for that. But it's the gradual sense of competition that Luffy faces in the grand line and later on the new world that make his charecter more interesting and allows both the story and his strengths and his charecter to develop, hopefully you agree.
honestly i thought the point of usopp was supposed to be the only realistic person. Like lets be real if any of us lived in the OP world, didnt have a devil fruit, and were just regular people we would act like Usopp AT BEST if we followed luffy into the grandline. Most of us probably wouldve chickened out early on the adventure
Nami is just as weak as him (possibly weaker) but still demonstrates believable savvy to hold her own in that world, so that doesn' fully excuse Usopp. I think Usopp's inadequacy and his contrasting arrogance/self-importance is understandably irritating. Then Usopps character fleshes out over time, and he becomes a far more compelling character. Usopp is one of my all time fave characters, but he was definitely annoying at the beginning
@@Kabra2012 I don't think they were trying to excuse Usopp. Usopp is someone that didn't have much purpose in the start. He had something he wanted, but not really a goal. Nami has a goal and always had one. She is secure in herself and knows her strengths. Usopp did not have that. He had a different journey to take than the other two in the weakling trio because his life experience was very different than the others. Water 7 was his first big turning point. I don't think his character would have been so compelling if we didn't have a starting point for him. And by starting point I mean, If he had started out like he is now, there wouldn't be much for him to work for. His dream isn't as set as the others, he needed something to work into. He only joined because he vaguely knew he wanted to be a pirate like his dad.
@@Kabra2012 the thing is, Usopp was the only straw hat with a normal life before joining the crew. Nami lived as a thief since childhood and was definitely hardened by this deadly lifestyle , but Usopp lived in a peaceful village without any dangers
@@Kabra2012 Nami has been doing Arlong’s dirty job since she was kid and stealing from pirates, she has grown seen bad thing happens to her family and friends, Usopp was more sheltered, the worst thing happened to him was his father leaving and his mother dying of ill ess
For some reason I can see Connor being an Enel fan lol. I also recently got back into One Piece after leaving off around maybe Chopper's arc in middle school not really sure. It took me months but when I finally caught up last month.. man I regret not keeping up with this series. Absolutely hated reading manga online even more when I was younger, so if my local library didn't have the next volume I just wouldn't read it. Then as I got older I kept telling myself it's too long I'd never catch up and put it off even more 😭can't wait for more content like this from all of you it feels like reliving a part of my childhood again it's so fun
18:39 Why? Nami, Zoro, Sanji, Ussop...are awesome. But every crew member shines even more because of Luffy. I think you will know more about Luffy after volume 15.
Dear future Connor, i hope you enjoyed one piece and understand the hype. Hopefully ur reading this because I wanted to say that I love ur personality and how strong minded you are and I hope the best for you and your future endeavours.
ngl i think manu should get connor back when he is nearing the " end " ( aka caught up to date ) just to see if his opinions shift / stay . or if he has another things to say . also tt op special with manu would seem like a r e a l l y fun one to watch
dude i waited for this so long but i would have never tought i would finally we have a hint of connor reading one piece and on oharas channel aswell. hope he catches up soon enough!
I can't wait for his reaction of luffy vs Enel when there's so much build up that gets diffused in a wacky way Also its unfortunate but understandable that he didn't enjoy the stalling that happens in little garden bc to me its an amazing moment of different wacky characters interacting and showing their personality under an absurd but urgent premise
i like the fact that luffy was so op before timeskip, and the plot twist from impel down and marineford was amazing to show how far luffy is from his goal and that taking down enemys wont be as easy as seen with the fight with doflamingo and katakuri and now with the yonko
Luffy as a character is meant to be just a guy who changes the world and goes head first in every situation. I think Luffy not changing as much through is good actually and you know where he is coming from. But he is just a fun dude who wants to live as free as he can. And it's not that he isn't facetted or you can't analyze his character, his character is fairly developed like what kind of person he is. My favourite moments were when he asked characters like Franky and also Chopper to join his crew after East Blue. Because you just realize 300 chapters (or less in case of Chopper) later he still does the same thing he did for Zoro and Nami. There is never a moment with Luffy where I feel Oda betrays his character for the sake of story. Him stopping Nami from hurting herself, but waiting for her until she wants his help instead of doing it from the beginning, is in essence the same he later he did for Robin He first wanted to hear from her that she wants to live instead of just deciding for her. Or even his decision to wait for Sanji and do nothing until HE decides to come back to the crew. Which are all also some kind of respect towards their freedom of decision. Luffy is such interesting character honestly, but isn't that classic Goku type who through every fight will change and get a stronger as a fighter and character. Or a deconstruction of the shonen protagonist like Gon.
Well, Luffy is not dumb and he doesn't need a lot of character development but when you caught up and reread it, you will see character development in him.
I once read a blog about characters and mentioned that some characters are not mean to have the focus/POV always. Some characters are the catalyst, helping to move the story AND hell, Luffy Is always the one that moves the story forward without being the focus of the story.
@@tobigrantlbart I mean there's character development in Luffy, Luffy is a static character but when the story goes on and when he loses Ace, you will see that his decision and action are becoming serious. And in the course of the Wano arc now, you will see that Luffy now cares about his environment like the famine of every land in Wano as before he only cares about his friend and nothing more.
It's actually super interesting hearing Conner mention the Luffy is the most boring character pre-Alabasta, because it's not really wrong. Luffy is just OP and doesn't have much going outside of when he gets serious against Arlong, and his execution in Logue Town. It really isn't until Crocodile that everything REALLY picks up.
It's just so fun to listen to Connor listing so many things that he thinks can be improved on. Hes definitely gonna be blown away when he sees it all happening.
I recommend tilting the chairs a little more towards the middle. It leads to a more comfortable conversation while keeping a good angle towards the camera. Since you're not talking directly to the audience, but more like to each other I believe that would be better for future similar videos! :D

One of the funniest lines I always love to hear when people first get into One Piece is: "The Straw Hats take no L's" 😂
Zolo be getting an L
@@jackyqiu05 yeah Zolo just gets Lost, but then he trips his way through the maze and finds his way to the big W
Zoro
6:25 I love his look as connor said that
Great to see him finally getting into it.
I wouldn't say that Oda was finding it hard to find his calling to whether it was dark or more comedic and I think his intention was always to display both because that's life; you need the dark to see the light, and the crew's smiles are that light.
Garnt finally made a video dedicated to one piece and now Connor finally watch One piece what kind of timeline I am living in
It's easy to oversee just how good of a character Luffy is, especially at the beginning. You have to watch really closely and read sometimes between the lines. But he develops non-stop and also shows wisdom even though he smiles and laughs all time, taking it easy. You definitely notice these little moments easily on re-read. As for example of these little moments in the beginning:
1) Luffy not wanting to hear Nami's past, because her past doesn't matter to him, only she herself does and he knows what kind of a person she is, he simply lives in the present
2) Luffy not immediately jumping into action once he made it to Cocoyashi village.
Arlong Park and the pinwheel, but there's ofc more instances
5) Drum, the climb up the mountain.
@@Akilla02 Tf Luffy gets a flashback early and even the ASL stuff is in the 500s
The moment I knew he would be my favorite character of all time was the “Shut up, Let’s go” scene. I read it when I was young and it hit me so hard as a child.
Ohara's reaction when Connor said Sanji's "backstory" was too funny
Ohara's reaction to that Looney toon eyeball moment was funny
😂😂
I had to stop the video to laugh
It's truly wonderful seeing more people getting into the beautiful and vast world of one piece..
Really great to see two of my favorite creators collabing. Looking forward to Connor’s progress through the series
@@fille6505 really because skypia in anime was the one I was bored at but the manga made me fall in love with skypia.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of anime history with those of us outside of Germany! It’s great!
Wow yeah just listened to it, it was dope af and earns a spot in the playlist.
Absolutely great opening, there's also an AMV with this opening... It's legendary😁
ruclips.net/video/zLq-YHJqEQc/видео.html&ab_channel=JakeRosen
If you love the first opening, then definitely watch the 4th "Karte des Herzen". Still my absolute favourite german opening. Man im getting goosebumbs xD
I've never heard of it, Definitely going to check it out!
So glad finally hearing Monke D. Connor talking about One piece. Thanks for the video.
Really love the reaction of someone just getting into the one piece and saying their thoughts about it and knowing it will blow their expectations.
Can't wait till connor make a video about one piece
love to see him liking it so far, I agree with most of his points which I felt when reading it for the first time
I think its worth watching the anime version some scenes he read in the manga. The walk to Arlong Park with the ost is so fucking epic.
So excited to see u and connor together, and talking about one piece too?! 10/10
I fully get Connors critique that Luffy feels too OP at the start, but I also think it speaks well to how developed he is as a character, this is a character who spent 10 years training because he knows hes gonna have to be strong, hes got his devil fruit which is already a big advantage, but it overall sets up that hes already surpassed the sea he grew up in, but that ultimately wont mean much when he gets to the Grand Line
It also sets Luffy apart from a lot of Shonen protags, who are more often more similar to Coby, who I see as Luffy's narrative opposite on a parallel path within the Navy
Starting out really underdeveloped and then they develop as they progress
Whereas Luffys development takes place in the 10 years between when Shanks leaves and when Luffy leaves
Super glad Connors finally on this im excited to hear more of what hes got to say about it
Also fun fact, both JoJo and Baki are longer than One Piece
Though JoJo mightve been passed since I learned this.
JoJo has more overall pages and Baki straight up has 1283 chapters altogether
I only bring up Baki cause I know the boys fuck with it
So hyped youre starting OP. Nothing like a new fan to refresh an old one
I remember watching One Piece for the 1st time as a teen and bruh, I can't wait to see Connor's opinion to the Arabasta Arc, to me that it's the exact point where the story goes "Oh shit, this is serious".
Gosh, to be back at Drum Island... it's like the calm before the One Piece storm of obsession!
Really looking forward to Conner's thoughts!
Love how throughout the whole video the excitement and energy never dialed down.
I hope you bring Conner back once he gets further in. Would love to hear more about what he thinks.
Ready for everyone on Trash Taste to be caught up so we get a full One Piece episode
I think after I finish JJK I will be reading One Piece so I can watch your videos you are very cool and I like your personality
I just started watching trash taste like a week ago, what a coincidence.
I really feel like Connor is missing out not watching the anime though, it took me months to catch up on but it was totally worth it. He'll miss out on the amazing music, the iconic and funny voices, and the cool fights.
I CAN'T wait for Connor's video, it's going to be so hype.
I felt the exact same way about Luffy until the Sabaody Arc
Yeah he is about to meet a guy who defeats luffy easily.
this was just watching a jojo fan and a one piece fan interact and I'm here for it.
Connor talking about one piece?
THIS IS BIG NEWS!!
honestly i thought the point of usopp was supposed to be the only realistic person. Like lets be real if any of us lived in the OP world, didnt have a devil fruit, and were just regular people we would act like Usopp AT BEST if we followed luffy into the grandline. Most of us probably wouldve chickened out early on the adventure
Yeah I also was surprised by him saying he was annoying

Connor: "being a one piece fan requires you to have a lot of 💰"
Me: Not when you aspire to be "King of the Pirates" ☠️🚢☠️
im a master of piracy🤫
i'm hyped for Connor's video after finish catching up!
Connor reading OP on the downlow is so fitting of him.
6:25 We all know !😂😂 Conor just spoiled himself .
I love the face Manu made when Connor said that
faxx dude
"one piece isn't as memed"
bro we're about to get much higher
(so high)
East Blue is considered the weakest ocean so Luffy beeing op early on is symbolic of things to come.
Mach das bitte für die ganze Serie mit ihm! Es ist super Content
I was dying at Ohara's face after he said "Looney toon eyes popping out."
Excited for Connor to get caught up and talk with the trash taste bois. Great collab love your theories
6:27 Ohara's face 😂
Yes! He's reading, the best way to get through the series. I'm so glad he's genuinely enjoying it too
ngl i think manu should get connor back when he is nearing the " end " ( aka caught up to date ) just to see if his opinions shift / stay . or if he has another things to say .
also tt op special with manu would seem like a r e a l l y fun one to watch
It would be the best episode for OP fans, and the worst episode for everyone else
dude i waited for this so long but i would have never tought i would finally we have a hint of connor reading one piece and on oharas channel aswell. hope he catches up soon enough!
I can't wait for his reaction of luffy vs Enel when there's so much build up that gets diffused in a wacky way
Also its unfortunate but understandable that he didn't enjoy the stalling that happens in little garden bc to me its an amazing moment of different wacky characters interacting and showing their personality under an absurd but urgent premise
i like the fact that luffy was so op before timeskip, and the plot twist from impel down and marineford was amazing to show how far luffy is from his goal and that taking down enemys wont be as easy as seen with the fight with doflamingo and katakuri and now with the yonko
Once Connor catches up they should do a full podcast episode where they just talk about one piece for fun
HE FINALLY STARTED OMG!!! im so happy i rly hope connor enjoys it
Damn hearing Connor talk about One Piece is really surreal 😂
Would love to see Connor come back and do another one of these hwn he has read a whole lot more.
@@pirateking2531 Character development does not equal character progression.
@@DieJG Yeah, he also changed the world as it is and sometimes the world affects him like losing Ace and many characters are stronger than him.
Best video on RUclips so far
Manu's look to the camera when he mentions looney tunes eyes is great haha
I did not see a Connor collab coming… great timing cause I just started one piece as well!
Finally Monke meets Monkey D. Luffy.
YESSSSS finally the collab i have been waiting for
6:24 "He loves doing the Loony Toons thing where the eyes are popping out"
Everyone: *sweating*
I never thought I would see this colab and I think it’s amazing
Love the dynamic between you! 👌
Also, I'd love to see videos about you Manu!
Oh man, can't wait for Connor to get caught up to One Piece and the boys will definitely do a Thrash Taste episode talking about it, and hopefully Ohara can be a guest in that episode.
We'll be waiting for you!
Come at any cost!!
we found out that Ohara is so bad at socializing look at his face throughout the conversation lmao
Two of my favorite anitubers collaborating? Lets goooo!!
I have to say I'm in awe that Connor has committed himself to read such a long series other than Jo Jo.
I'm so proud of you CDawg! `
Welcome to One Piece!
