I think it had more to do with microphones than the audience. In any event, no-one should EVER tell an audience when to applaud (clap as you put it) or how much. What I heard was a second's pause in a proper manner before the applause. It appears that the cultured audience were there to enjoy the opera rather than take every opportunity to make a poppy-show of themselves. This is not Italy where audiences (unruly football crowds, more like), go over the top at absolutely everything that is put in front of them. I hope that you have noted that it was "Mimi" who replied to you.
