This guy is the best. What the eye doesn't eventuality see doesn't matter.
absolutely brilliant you showed the full works how to do it including cutting the ceiling to get to the other sides and said how to fix the unwanted holes... fabulous
When did he say how to full the holes?
what a clever way to do it ive often wondered how to solve this problem if you cant lift the upstairs floor and thanks to you now i know
O man, so many holes. Good for plaster and painter. Thank you for your video.
I've never been able to work out how to loop the wires into a fixed plasterboard ceiling and now that explains it. Just need to learn how to plaster the holes up now :) Addicted to your clear and simple vids. Nice one!
No call for any holes in ceiling
@@padraigflanagan4406 then how?
Would have been nice to see how you fill the holes. Great video, enjoyed watching and learning.
A really great video tutorial - thanks!
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Very good, great detail! Thanks for this video m8!
Simple and direct. Thanks.
Thx! Got my thought of method confirmed, now i can start working on it and stop wonder if it will work! ^^
Thanks for this! I've got downlights in my bathroom and want to replace them (they're covered in paint and the previous owners were not so good with the DIY so I dont know if they are correctly rated at IP65), so really glad you also explained that they're easy enough to take out
I wish you showed us how to block the holes as well, btw it was brilliant and thanks a lot
I was just thinking the same and looking for videos of his that show the hole blocking grrrr!
If you cut circular holes you keep the cut outs and best number them. Then to replace you put a 8 to 10 mm thick short piece of flat wood up into the hole which extends half the diameter of rhe hole either side . you can put a screw in it to pull the wood down onto the ceiling or use your fingers on top of the wood to hold down. You use a drywall screw up through the ceiling to hold the said wood both sides then screw your cut out to that piece of wood. It is how plasters patch fill dry wall. If they have an unsightly hole they cut an even shape in the drywall and fill it with a piece of drywall the same size and shape holding it as aforesaid.
Nice ceiling decor!
Great video! So straightforward!
Love the video now I wana see the plaster work and texture and how’s its look after
Thanks brother, this was a perfect guide.
Excellent! I'm just about to do the same job and this made everything very clear on how to wire everything - just a daisy chain of downlighters really. Many thanks
Great simple explanation - I'm now a subscriber. Thanks for taking the time to make it
Great video thank you very much.
Thanks! Very informative video!
I use a Wago box and connectors with a fly lead to the fitting as this stops any undue strain on the fitting itself causing it to move.
The springs are good for single leads but struggle to hold their position with multi cables attached.
Keep up the good work👏
Really good video thank you! Im starting an electrician course and these videos are great and helping me prepare
I wont be watching his videos to learn how to be an electrician! RAF!
@@wyndavies5044 good for you….
Good video, clear method. Thank you. Peace be unto you.
Great video! Thanks for sharing
Hole sole :-) Love it!
you mad it easy and simple loved the video
He is not MAD
best video on this! thanks
It’s great work 😍
Another fantastic job 👏
Great work man
very good. thank you
Thank you. But any tips on how to thread the cable from hole to hole?
Great videos, clear instruction, reassuring.
Thank you
Brother your video is great, can you make video how to construct House footer, please lots of love for your nice video.
Das ist großartig und danke für dein Video. Ich installiere die genauen Lichter in meinem Büro und das war sehr hilfreich! Danke von der anderen Seite des Teiches!
Excellent video
Super filmik
Amazing job I had same situation laminate floor above kitchen lol
Nice explanation
Great video is only way to pass this cables, as circuit is protecteted RCD does not matter 50 mm
How would you deal with the earth if it’s a single cable? I.e end of the line device
What model down lights did you use mate are they any good?
Really good tutorial, do you train new starters?
Nice to have u back on youtube pal.
Thanks. I was just too busy at work and some other troubles.
Can you use 1.5 cable?
Very good 👍🏻
I save your money and time
Perfect...example of a hack job.
Genuine question; have you got a better tutorial? Planning on doing this in the kitchen soon but would rather avoid making the additional holes and the reskim that I'm guessing the wife would insist on!
Chris Shenton use a wood chisel for the ceiling plaster where the joists are and take a bit of wood out enough for the thin wire only.
Feed the electrical wire with a wire coat hanger (taped) fish it past all the joists using this method and simply plaster the small channels you made with the chisel.
@@mbrofc baloney. Not compliant with bs7671 in any event if cutting into joists and not protecting cables so routed with armour
good video make another video showing how you filled the un used holes
mango3586 you would save the piece that came out of the hole saw, next you get a small piece of wood and feed up into hole, net use screws plasterboard screws to fix into the wood that has been passed up through hole then the pieces can be screwed to wood that's in hole and finally easy filler to make good, sand and then painting, etc.
Excellent!!
That was awesome
what brand is your led pot light and where did you buy them?
How do I connect a loop in when there is only a neutral and live connection. Can I use a wago connector like you used on the earth
What do you mean?
Perfect.
If you are to do the work from this room, you should cut hatches in the ceiling large enough to drill through the joists at least 50mm from the ceiling, this method is not code and presents a dangerous future proposition re heating of wires and safety from nailing the wire... hey itll work the lights for this demo, but its incorrect on many levels of safety.
If mechanically protected running notched in joist you are allowed do this. Joists are notched on top for cables. Is all that wrong for not being 50mm from top.
I would say you should have cut out plasterboard before the joist with a padsaw enough to drill through the actual joist so that the cables are not against the joist and plasterboard. Also you should really be putting Earth sleeping on the CPC’s before they enter the push connectors. It seems like you have also left off the cord grips supplied with the downlights? Cord grip should be on and gripping the outer sleeving and not the conductors, and there should be a lid provided that screws on over the terminals? There should be no single insulated conductors showing, best way would have been use a choc box and take a flex to each downlight ?
Reference methods allow for cable to be against plasterboard surface so is the OSG wrong ?
Your amazing
There is no doubt in my mind you are the best Electrician youtuber.
What IP rating do you recommend for directly above a shower for a bathroom with no extractor fan. However a large window is open when in use?
Its not about recommendations you need to follow the regs. Page 94-95 of on site guide. Fan/windows makes no difference. IPx4 minimum if over 2.25m in height. IPx5 if under 2.25m in height. Remember to use SELV if the circuit is not rcd protected. Also it is notifiable work so must be signed off by an building control (or via a qualified spark)
Very good
Best DIY Video I have watched so far
Clive Likumbi must be the only one you’ve watched, then.
So you connected the new wire to the old wire light so they work with the same old light switch on the wall? But what about the earth wire? You put it in a clip, are they touching? Or is that a seperate wire holder clip? Is that not dangerous? Having no earth wire?
Whats the maximum spotlight can you replace?
Thank you it was very useful and great work. But from where the electrical coming for the new spotlights? Please mention that how you connected the center-point cable for the new spotlights. BR,
Wagos in a box. My wife could do it
Thank you sir
Great video! Do the cables not have to be 50mm up going through a joist?
Yes it should be ! But I think 90% of electricians will do it this way and nobody cares. It s just the easiest way to do it.
@@how2d223 count me in the 10%
How2D2 90%? You’re having a laugh, man. This is rough as toast. Always drill through the joists to avoid penetration of nails etc. Earth cables not sleeved and single insulation showing on entry to fittings and cable clamps not used.
This is not how you install downlights.
@@DrummerOnTwoWheels What is the purpose of sleeving an earth cable when the entire metal fitting is connected to earth? For such a short length, this achieves nothing.
Nick Gilbert sleeving the earth identifies the conductor, you would understand that if you were an electrician. Rough as toast.
do you not need to sleeve the cpc in the spot light?
lain kaayo tan-awon imong alkuba chui kay daghan kaayog bangag
I'm confused about the cables under the joists bit. If the joists are untouched how do you seat the old bit of plasterboard properly into position to fill the holes back up. Surely the cable you've installed will prevent this.
Your right to be confused, it’s someone playing at being a electrician instead of being a professional
Notice he marked where each stud joist was. Then cut the extra holes where the joists were. Cables go over the joists, not under, then he uses the cut out holes and screws it back in to each stud. Very simple.
He clearly states he's running the cable under the joists and can be seen doing so.
In any case how could you run the cable over the joist from a 70mm circular cut out centred on a joist
Good video. Did you notch the joists to let cable pass through ?
No, his hole saw drilled the joist enough to pass the cable through
@@paulhill2012 how 🤔?
@@user-yw6qb9tt7t directly from underneath. He drilled a 70mm diameter hole into the centre of the joist that removes the ceiling and a piece of joist. He does that for each joist. I doubt that it is allowed under regulations.
@@paulhill2012 he is using a hole saw. That will not remove a piece of joist. A spade bit would but not a hole saw. What has happened is he says in reply to a comment that there was lathe and plaster with plaster board over so this has given him the clearance to put back in the cut out plasterboard leaving out the lathe and plaster cut out. It is all in breach of bs7671 to run cables across joists if not either 50mm deep or mechanically protected as in this case someone may unknowingly put another layer of plasterboard on and screw into the unprotected cables
thankyou very good video well done
Would have liked to see finished ceiling after plugging in holes and plastering
This is not a plastering video. Any plasterer can tell you how it is done. By smoking roll ups waiting for the first coat to be ready for top coat
👌🏻👏🏻
Very nice and helpful.
In the UK, would a part P qualified electrician be required to do this work? As I plan to install down lights in my kitchen soon.
I think I'd prefer the cables passing through the timber though.
If you are drilling through joist then you will be governed by Part P Regulations. If you also installing a new circuit, this is also notifiable under Part P
@@OldFloatingSeaman And, isn't it notifiable because it's in the kitchen?
Keith C Some work in Kitchens is now exempt but a new Cooker circuit is notifable Just one example.
@@OldFloatingSeaman Thanks for that clarification. But, this video is worrying, he appears to know the correct way but doesn't care.
He's is fine apart from not mechanically protecting the cable running under each joist. For that you would get told by an assessor to rip it all out
What about cables in celling
All this work and finish work for 4 led down lights
👍👍👍
I think before you start to drill the holes in the selling you should check or there any cable's or pipes in the selling ( safety ). Cable all ready was in the selling. How do you know from where cable are going and wich direction? And then there is space between the joint ant plasterboard for cable?
ceiling, already, which and "and"
indokarasan This truly made me laugh. Bless MrGine77 😊. Also I believe he meant ‘joist’ instead of ‘joint’.
what a great idea...
What's that connector you used for the redundant earth wires?
Wago, Google them amazing things.
Hi , i just replacing my old light bulb to led downlight n the old light got 3wires, but the led only need 2 wires, what should i do with the earth wire? Thx
I don't understand how to plaster the ceiling where you can't see it. That ceiling had a texture. What if it had popcorn or drop down. How do you cover up stuff like that without being able to see the repair?
You cannot disguise the holes. He kept the cut outs to replace but some marks will be left afterwards no matter what you do
Brother give me one chance.i do wiring without any extra holes
What do you mean passing cables uder the joices ? Aren't plasterboards attached to the joices ?
1000fantomas he would use hole saw to cut into areas where joists are going across ceiling, he has no access from above. So I guess the hole saw could be used by measuring to locate joists and the underside of the joists cut , to pass cable under joist. Normally joists are located to standard span distances. Metal detectors could be used to locate plasterboard screws that are used to fix plasterboard to joists.
Dave Jones i do that on the daily bssis. It doesn't show how he passes the cable.
The joists are remains untouched and I slide the cable underneath them so if there is a single plasterboard - cables are almost inside the thickness of plasterboard. in this video I have old ceiling with the wooden stripes covered with old cement based plaster and one layer of plasterboard ( unexpected) so cables are under the joists at a depth of around 3 cm
@@how2d223 Still not getting it. So you're not drilling into the joist, you're drilling beside the joist and then creating a 3cm channel in plasterboard to go under joist?
I would do similar but drill a another hole into the joist (through the hole in the plasterboard)
Thank you for video very good but you appear like a magician how you get cables through.
Great vid but im confused how there is a gap between the joists. Are the counter battens between the joists and ceiling? It sounds like your saying there is plasterboard over old lath and plaster ceiling but still cant imagine where there is a gap unless there are counter battens, thanks
like it
Hi, where are you based?
May i know how mm is the gypsum board please
Good method....Think you need to wear a mask though, don’t want you catching Coronavirus off all the dust 🤣
Did you say 1mm cable
Great video but can anyone tell him that the Artex contains asbestos? Watching drilling a hole without wearing respirator with right filter makes me concern.
There's always one!
Only about 10 per cent asbestos and then white asbestos. All poles smoke so no concern
Where did you bought this led ?
Shop
I would use a Dade dust catcher
How much would an electrician charge for a job like this (including materials)?
too much
Nit enough
ITT people saying everything is wrong but not saying why.
Idiots
He didn’t need to make extra holes. Just use a flex bit and drill through them.
what size wire did you use
1mm Cable
What about beams. Won't they be in the way at some point?
I was thinking the same. I would measure from inside the loft
Electric cables penetrate everything
Anyone tell me how to replace the bulb in these or do you have to replace the whole unit ?
Thanks lads.
Remove downlight and replace GU10 bulb.. no you dont need to replace unit
