I love how she said "nothing sounds like this today"
This song is 100 times better than the garbage that comes out today.
I grew up during the 80's. I was a hard rock/classic rock guy who really didn't listen to New Wave at the time.
But over the years I've learned to appreciate it and really enjoy listening to it. It does make me feel nostalgic. A song like this makes remember whats its like to 13 in 1986.
by any standards, this is a great song. If you dont get it you dont get great music

Just discovered this channel. I wouldn't be as unnecessarily rude and cruel as to call her "nuts," but this is a good tune, imho. Facts aren't up for debate, but opinions are, and she stated her subjective opinion. As everyone is allowed ✌️💙

Just in case nobody else mentioned it... Simple Minds are SCOTLAND's finest. The video was actually shot in upstate New York (not Ireland) in the summer of 1985. But you weren't a million miles out thinking they're Irish, just a short hop over the water to Dublin. I feel lucky to have grown up with this band's music. Jim & Charlie are lovely guys, met them several times. Anyway the guy here gets it and maybe in time as the lady broadens her musical tastes it might appeal - try listening on your own, with some headphones, and without the datestamped video playing - that might workout better for you. Whilst this song came out at the height of the 80's, it's actually kinda timeless and is one of my favourite SM songs. It's hard to nail this band by any one song, so many albums, so many styles of music dating back almost 45 years now. I think if you're gonna check another one out - try 'Belfast Child' next - SM's only UK number one song - completely different to anything else you've ever heard.

Well with myself being a musician, songwriter and a vocalist I do like a lot of different types of music, but I can understand where she's coming from with liking the newer music better given that she's not as familiar with some of these different music types. But I did see a pole not long ago that was taken with younger people from ages about 11 to 20 asking them if they thought that the older music from the 70's, 80's and 90's was either better then todays music, just as good as todays music or not as good as todays music and I was surprised on how it came out. It said that 23 percent thought that todays music was better. 18 percent thought it was about the same and just as good, but 59 percent thought that the older music was better. I didn't expect that many to be into the older music. But I guess a lot of them do like it.

Simple Minds are Scottish. Jim Kerr the lead singer, and Charlie Burchill the lead guitarist were born in Glasgow. The other band members, Mel Gaynor (drums), Derek Forbes (bass and the guy standing on the edge of the cliff), Michael MacNeill (keyboards) and the coloured lady Robyn Clarke are also from Scotland.

I'm 52 and I lived through it all. I was 15 in the mid-80s and it was AMAZING! But there are a few things you have to understand. Synthesizers were NOT in every band and some used them a LOT better than others and managed to make sounds that are STILL good today.
The 80s was a mix of EVERYTHING in a 10-year experiment that ended good AND bad.
Some bands like New Order, The Cure, and Depeche Mode were HUGE synth users, but their sound is STILL good today. Some that went more with a pure 80s sound that was in fashion for about 2-3 years are lost in time. They just don't fit our musical tastes anymore. Kind of like Brown Corduroy and satin shirts are not in anymore either.
The GOOD Stuff was all of that progressive Rock we got (U2!!!!) that led to the 90s great rock bands that used synth for ROCK instead of pop. Like GnR and the transition, Aerosmith did with stuff like Walk this way... Until the end of the 90s, EVERYBODY in North America KNEW the names of the bands... All the electronic innovations pushed on by the bands demanding new sounds and the GOOD sounds we get now from artificial instruments were GREAT in creating new things to make us wonder all over again...
The moment when everything changed and music lost its soul, was when Vanilla Ice sampled "Under Pressure" in Ice, Ice Baby!!! It was GAME OVER after that!
Sure, he got sued, and you can't really blame ONE GIUY for this whole mess. BUT, it garnered worldwide publicity, and it opened up the possibilities of NOT creating anything anymore and just using a be4at or riff and build around that. And since being creative takes WORK and EFFORT, we got what we did. The result of laziness.
Now, there are HUNDREDS of bands with the same sounds and with unpronounceable names for the bands & the tunes.

I have an honest theory on why she doesn't like this and I could have saved the song for you. She's calculating the social score of the people in the video, not listening with her ears. If you wanted a proper reaction from most women, turn the video OFF, just put the headphones on. Don't let their minds get caught in a mental circus of "wow that shirt is out of style"... "his teeth are crooked".... "that hair style hasn't existed in 30 years"... etc, etc, etc. Women are scientifically programmed to judge a person's social score in nanoseconds. 80's videos are off their charts of comfort and they blue screen because it doesn't make any f'ing sense. Had you turned the f'ing video off and simply let hear ears be the only judge, she would have had to listen of the quality of voice, and everyone who's heard simple minds knows the quality is beyond 99% of whats available today.
