Engine rebuild could be done at your "homeshop", 1 hour there, another tomorrow and so-on, doesnt need to happen overnight :) At least its always close.
My 3406a was best 3406 I've ever used and mega reliable and fuel efficient, can't beat mechanical A motor leave this engine and all parts to build the motor as it was intended

3406 (now called the A model) serial number for a truck engine is 92U. Which the serial number on the block, can be located on the drivers side around number five cylinder towards the top. 3406 comes in PCT, PCTA, DIT, DITA. The rods look like wide taper and should have an 8N1726 part number on the bottom. It was the last rod used in this series. The fuel pumps are not the same on PC, DIT and DITA. Internal and external fuel lines, nozzles and nozzle bodies are not the same on PC vs DI. Internal fuel lines and nozzle bodies are not the same on DIT vs DITA. Cylinder head can be DI or PC, depends on nozzle chamber. On high HP DITA engines, if you use the wrong head it can crack on top around number five cylinder. Older crankshafts had a two piece gear. Newer cranks, went to a one piece gear.
Can a 3406 block be used to build a 3406B?
@@mikethetrucknut The first 3406 92U01215 to around 5,000 oiled rocker arms via head bolt holes. That was fixed and moved to the oil supply front and rear. Also the first ones did not have spray jets, used the oil hole out of the block via main oil feed. Next you have to look at oil supply to the fuel pump. As you well know a 3406B pump sets up close, while a 3406 is in the middle. Will have to look more when I get back to work.
The drivers side had a larger plate cover, while a 3406B block went to a small square cover. Oil return on a 3406 block air compressor is in a drain hose. The 3406B block, air compressor drains back in front cover. But I have always seen a o-ring boss plug for the 3406B block. Part number or serial number off old block helps narrow down what you have. So a good guess, they might not work, as the group number in SIS for a 3406 is not listed for a 3406B.

I have seen them go for a lot higher in the same condition. Fully assembly for twice as much
Modern jobber parts and some donor parts. Assemble it, install it in something and run it. You'll never beat it up enough to hurt it. 😀
After this one, do the same to the one in the Pete. By that time it'll be your third Cat overhaul and you'll officially be a knowledgeable Cat mechanic 😁

The timing advance / fuel injection pump drive you showed on the pallet was for a 3406B
I think those injectors are for a B as well
If anything the core value on the extra parts are worth it. keep those parts till you need them rare find… love the videos

Hey Mike, what about K2? Could you to use it in K2? Or did K2 have a Cummins in her. Would you prefere to have a Cummins in her? It might be easier to stick with a Cummins in K2, if that's what she came with, motor mounts and wiring etc. Just an idea Mike, for possible uses for the two 3406a's you have now. K2 had a triple 4 Cummins but we were thinking this could be a good alternative. Since there's no air to air
But for the price you can't beat it

I have a question about the torque. If this here engine was for a front end loader, would it be able to keep up with highway speeds? as a truck engine

You've dropped on your feet with this one, assuming it will convert for truck use. K2 or even Smokey? Love Andrea's pyjamas. Only sell triplicated parts, hang on to the rest until you are dead certain you don't need them, ie once the 359 and K2 are running well.

You got a good deal on those engine parts, why don't you just use some of those parts, and see which truck in the yard whose original engine can use those parts.
Worked at a Cat dealer for 35 years on transmissions and hydraulics, never heard of a “gold kit”, could you explain.
They are the names for CAT rebuild kits. Silver, gold and platinum. Platinum is the best and comes with a reman head

Scania debuts engine and transmission in US trucks
Scania has begun supplying engines and transmissions to Navistar trucks in the United States. Initially, the new trains will equip the LT models. It is worth remembering that the Swedish brands are as American as part of the Traton Group. That is, the same company that controls the German Volkswagen Trucks and Buses and MAN.
So the trend is that more and more models will use the same modular platform. This will, among other things, lead to a greater division of products such as engines, transmissions and electronic solutions. The aim is to reduce costs and increase the efficiency and profitability of companies.
According to the companies, this is the S13 system. That is, with a Scania engine of 12.7 liters and six cylinders in line, combined with the T14 automated transmission, based on the G33. Therefore it is a 12-speed box and two other super low gears.
Scania's G33 engine and cashier debut on International's LT trucks in the US.
Consumption reduction reaches 15%
According to the company, the Scania engine has power options ranging from 375 to 520 hp. Torque at the time ranged from 173 mkgf to 256 mkgf, available from 900 rpm.
