  • Boom! The final 1,000-foot stack that once served the retired Widows Creek Fossil Plant near Stevenson, AL, was safely imploded earlier today. The removal of the old plant, which was idled in 2014, is about 90% complete. The site is being prepared for future economic redevelopment.
👉Check back later to see the demolition from different angles!

Used to see this tall chimney doing its thing from I-24 during frosty commutes to South Pittsburg in the mornings. Hope TVA has plenty of capacity to replace it.

Awesome shot. Looks like something out of a apocalypse movie or video game.

Hate to see the old girl go always glamoured at the height of that structure, you could go fishing close to the base of it and watch it sway in the wind like a giant oak tree.

:-( Hope the landscape isn't going to be filled up with loads of windfarms and solar panels in fields just to destroy loads more land just for "clean" energy that will take up more space than this plant ever did and scrubbers doing loads more to clean up using coal in a clean manner.

While wind and solar suck, mountaintop removal coal mining is infinitely more destructive than a solar or wind power plant could ever be. To replace Widows Creek, it would be awesome to add a 1,117 megawatt AP1000 and 600 megawatts of natural gas power.

@@Jemalacane0 I am down with the AP1000. Nuke is the way to go for clean energy, but the only downside is cost. Look at the AP1000 project at Vogtle, GA. They have gone way over their original budget and are about 5 years behind schedule. But the AP1000 is great if you can build it.
